Autumn Leaflets: A Collection Of Poetry, Kayla I. Shown-Dean
Autumn Leaflets: A Collection Of Poetry, Kayla I. Shown-Dean
Student Theses and Dissertations
This collection of poetry was inspired by Johnny Mercer's "The Autumn Leaves." Major themes of the collection include: the unity of nature, unification of all things, the role of Christians in the secular world, and the releasing of the past. While the majority of these poems are written in free verse, occasionally the author implements formal verse such as diamante, limerick, and experimentations with the sonnet and sestina. "Autumn Leaflets" is sorted into four different titled sections: "The Falling Leaves," "Of Red and Gold," "The Sunburned Hands," and "Old Winter's Song." Each section receives its title from Mercer's lyrics and …

The Boys I Should Never Write About, Ashley Rivers
The Boys I Should Never Write About, Ashley Rivers
All Theses
This creative thesis is made up of twenty-three poems written in various styles, though most fall into two different categories, the short, sparse, Eigner-like poems or the long narrative poems. The poems demonstrate the theme of how women's sexuality fits into society and how that sexuality affects their lives. This creative thesis also demonstrates the author's ability to understand poetry and literature in general through the ability to create.

Thought and Verse: French Poetry in Conversation with French Existentialist Philosophy
Maxwell Edmonds
Faculty Sponsor: Karen de Bruin, French Language & Literature
What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? How can we live authentically and with purpose? How can we conduct our day to day lives, while faced with our own mortality? These are several of the principle themes focused upon within existentialist philosophy, the philosophy of existing as a mortal human being.
I chose to study existentialist philosophy through the lens of one of my other interests: French poetry. This combination has allowed me to approach both …

Innocence Lost: The Tension Of Contrary States In Blake And Milton, Andrew M. Spratt
Innocence Lost: The Tension Of Contrary States In Blake And Milton, Andrew M. Spratt
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Though writing more than one-hundred years apart, the poetic works of John Milton and William Blake interacted with one another to such an extent that they have become increasingly entwined within the critical imagination of scholars over the past two centuries. Despite the recognition of the influence of Milton upon Blake, and subsequent examinations of Blake’s opinions of Milton as an artist, a thorough examination of Blake’s opinion of Milton as the narrator of Paradise Lost has heretofore remained unattempted. This essay examines Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience as a lens through which to interpret the narrator of …
After “Borderlands” The Making Of An Academic Chola: Poems, Veronica Sandoval
After “Borderlands” The Making Of An Academic Chola: Poems, Veronica Sandoval
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This poetry collection is by a Mexican American spoken word, performance poet, Lady Mariposa, from Sullivan City turned Chican@ feminist after coming to terms with her mestizaje through Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands La Frontera: The New Mestiza. In Lady Mariposa’s journey as an “Academic Chola,” the term “chola” articulates her Chican@ identity and creates a new space in academia by using “chola” as a hybrid of identity and style in the formation of her poetics. Her poetry can also be called pocho, pocha, Tex-Mex and code switches. She is inspired by Chican@ literature and history, lowriders, cholo culture, cholas, jazz, hip …
The Ripening Of Mangos, Katherine Hoerth
The Ripening Of Mangos, Katherine Hoerth
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This project is a collection of poems which draw influence from Romantic, confessional, and post-modern poetry movements, and can most accurately be described as Confessionalistic, though they are resistant to categorization. The poems function to dismantle archetypal definitions of feminine identity, and instead aim to depict identity to be fluid and multifaceted.
The Ripening of Mangos is divided into four sections. The first section deconstructs the 'angel' or 'virgin' archetype, while the second deconstructs the 'monster' or 'whore' archetype. Section three includes voices of procreation, and functions to complicate the image of 'the mother.' The last section, Transplanting, shows gendered …
Crossing Borders: Cultural And Linguistic Passages In The Poetry Of Pat Mora And Gary Soto, Amber Christine Bowden
Crossing Borders: Cultural And Linguistic Passages In The Poetry Of Pat Mora And Gary Soto, Amber Christine Bowden
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Poets Pat Mora and Gary Soto have long been a presence in anthologies citing their multicultural content, yet their work has not been placed as part of the classroom canon. By leaving their work out of the classroom, we have lost the benefit of their diverse poetry. As the demographics of Utah shift, including works such as Mora and Soto’s becomes more essential for student success. In a close textual analysis of seventeen poems by Mora and Soto we can see that each poet uses a variety of themes to frame their verse. Not only does an overall analysis show …
The Grotesque Menagerie, Merin Leigh Tigert
The Grotesque Menagerie, Merin Leigh Tigert
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The Grotesque Menagerie is an exploration of domestic and gender roles of the American West. The burlesque and the grotesque are used as the dissection tools throughout this manuscript to examine these roles, and in so doing pervert both the ideal and the abject. As the author, these poetic explorations and dissections leave me stuck in an odd androgyny: I am suspect of my own feminist preclusions and oddly obliged to interact with the established patriarchal tropes of the western poetic cannon. I do not reject the canon as a symbol of patriarchal power; I do not request the role …
Golden Flower Of Prosperity, Katelyn Elizabeth Holland
Golden Flower Of Prosperity, Katelyn Elizabeth Holland
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Golden Flower of Prosperity is a mixed genre work, incorporating letters, found material, lyric poetry, narrative poetry, and prose to explore the experience of two Chinese immigrants in Eastern Oregon at the turn of the twentieth century. By combining found documents with imagined narratives and creating folktales from a few facts, the poems provide an embellished interpretation of history, building the characters of Ing Hay and Lung On into archetypal legends, while still endeavoring to make them seem like real people.
The Objectivist poets Charles Reznikoff and Louis Zukofsky inspired some of the formal aspects of the project. Reznikoff’s found …
Sailing The Archipelago In A Boat Of Rhymes; Pantun In The Malay World, Muhammad Haji Salleh
Sailing The Archipelago In A Boat Of Rhymes; Pantun In The Malay World, Muhammad Haji Salleh
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The extremely popular poetic form from Insular Southeast Asia, the pantun, travelled from its unknown source throughout the Malay Archipelago, first in Malay, then in the languages of Southeast Asia. In the ports and states where they were received, local colour, other idiosyncrasies, references, and linguistic characteristics have been added, and in fact, special forms with special names developed. This basic form is known, composed, and loved in at least 40 dialects of Malay, and 35 non-Malay languages, in the Peninsula and many of the islands of Malaysia and Indonesia. It spread through trade routes, ports, and also via diasporas …
Poetry And Diversity: The Power Of Miserly Words In Teaching, Samuel Hinton
Poetry And Diversity: The Power Of Miserly Words In Teaching, Samuel Hinton
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship
I share perspectives on selected everyday issues that have a multicultural import. Some of the poems presented are from The Road To Kenema And Other Poems (2003). I contend that there is a connection between poetry and diversity, and that teachers could use poetry to introduce difficult topics, and develop critical thinking with their students in all disciplines.

Gesamtkunstwerk And Other Trifles: Poems, Derk A. Olthof
Theses and Dissertations
In all their various categories, the arts serve as the dominant subject matter of Gesamtkunstwerk and Other Trifles. The title itself begins with a German word-meld—gesamt (total) + kunstwerk (work of art). Thus a primary aim of these poems is to bring as many elements of art together as possible and to use their various forms (self-portraits, nocturnes, odes, etc.) as metaphorical frameworks that inform abstractions such as regret ("How to Draw Regret"), psychological disorders ("Insomnia Nocturnes") and confusion in how one should feel about living realities as opposed to inanimate objects ("Dead Starling"). Most of the poems …
