Following His Shadow: The Haiku Of Sant¨Ka, Keith Johnson, Dr. Van C. Gessel Sep 2013

Following His Shadow: The Haiku Of Sant¨Ka, Keith Johnson, Dr. Van C. Gessel

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Apart from an all too brief period of popularity during the early ’80’s, the poetry of Taneda Sant©ka (1882-1940) has languished in relative anonymity. He has yet to enjoy the household-name status of fellow haijin like Bash©, IkkyÅ, Ry©kan, et al. This strikes me as inexcusable and yet somehow expected. The life of Sant©ka was defined more by its defeat, rejection, and loneliness than by its triumph, acceptance or fellowship. What amazed me when I first came upon his work (and continues to amaze me now) was how, despite alcoholicism, poverty, malnutrition, suicidal dementia, emotional desolation and loneliness so sharp …

A Poet Drives A Truck: Poems By And About Lowell A. Levant, Lowell A. Levant Sep 2013

A Poet Drives A Truck: Poems By And About Lowell A. Levant, Lowell A. Levant

University of Akron Press Publications

Lowell A. Levant had the twin vocations of poet and truck driver. He rose to prominence in Berkeley in the sixties as a member of the Artists, Musicians, Poets, and Sympathizers Local of the I.W.W., whose work was collected in Poems Read in the Spirit of Peace and Gladness. Readers will notice four main qualities of his poems. First, as observed by his mentor, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gary Snyder, there is “… the complex depth of his writing about work, machinery, trucks, equipment, repair, maintenance -- all in a deceptively slightly befuddled voice that masks the surprising competence of …

Homophonic Translation, Appositional Writing, And The Monster, Ryan Landry Clark Sep 2013

Homophonic Translation, Appositional Writing, And The Monster, Ryan Landry Clark

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation features a combination of critical and creative work

exploring the ethics of appropriative writing and the reparative potential of homophonic translation. The opening essay examines the ethics of appropriation- based poetry and introduces the concept of what I call "appositional writing," a term to describe ethically-minded works of poetry that make use of appropriative writing methods. The next three parts of this dissertation are each appositional writing projects that make use of homophonic translation as the primary method of composition. "Arizona State Bill 1070: An Act" is a homophonic translation of the anti-immigration bill of the same name. …

Bilingual Quotations In Renaissance Poetry And The Relations Of Romance Languages, Treb Hw Winegar, Dr. Christopher Lund Sep 2013

Bilingual Quotations In Renaissance Poetry And The Relations Of Romance Languages, Treb Hw Winegar, Dr. Christopher Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The study of bilingual quotations, made possible by this grant, has led me into a number of fascinating, related sidetracks which have been very little studied, especially since the waning of the French school of literature compareè. I have taken the time to study some of these sidetracks since they are relevant to the phenomenon I proposed to study. Others I have been able only to marvel at and reserve for future study.

Reflections Of The English Tradition In James Henry’S Poetry, Ryan D. Stewart, Dr. John Talbot Sep 2013

Reflections Of The English Tradition In James Henry’S Poetry, Ryan D. Stewart, Dr. John Talbot

Journal of Undergraduate Research

James Henry (1798-1876) was an Irish classicist most well known for his long and eccentric commentary of Virgil’s Aeneid—Aeneidea, or Critical, Exegetical and Aesthetical Remarks on the Aeneis—and known to some extent for his work as a physician and his penchant for pamphleteering. In the mid-1980s, however, Christopher Ricks—a prominent Victorian scholar—discovered a privately printed volume of Henry’s poetry “‘unopened’, as the book dealers say,” (meaning the pages had not been cut) as he was browsing the stacks at the Cambridge Library. He included some of Henry’s poetry in the New Oxford Book of Victorian Verse (1987), which he edited. …

Milton’S Prose: Why Did He Do It?, Shawn D. Rossiter, Dr. O. Glade Hunsaker Sep 2013

Milton’S Prose: Why Did He Do It?, Shawn D. Rossiter, Dr. O. Glade Hunsaker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project came about as a result of a computer database of Yale’s edition of Milton’s Prose being constructed by the Brigham Young University English Department. The completion of the database has been delayed, however, and consequently I was compelled to shift the object and approach of my study. Originally, I had planned to make an analysis of the development of Milton’s religious thought over time by tracing his use of significant words. Instead, for the ORCA project I have completed a thorough reading of Milton’s prose with an attempt to formulate an informative hypothesis for why the prose was …

Signaletics, Emilia Phillips Aug 2013

Signaletics, Emilia Phillips

University of Akron Press Publications

Signaletics pits the measured against the immeasurable, the body against identity, and the political against the personal. With a defunct 19th-century body measurement system of criminal identification as a foundation, the poems move in and out of history, only to arrive at the immediate voice of a speaker, distraught about the death of a child brother, the remove of a father, and the estrangement of the personal with the politics of her country.

Orca Scholarship Report And Summary, Amy Morris Mcglashan, Robert Marshall Aug 2013

Orca Scholarship Report And Summary, Amy Morris Mcglashan, Robert Marshall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I have been looking forward to the time to report on the results of my research project. I had proposed to study the writings of Robert Burns, travel to Scotland to experience the places he lived in and wrote about, and paint those places described in his ballads and poetry. The entire process was incredibly enjoyable, not to mention educational and inspiring.

Noun-Adjective Compounds In Old English Poetry, Ryan Christensen, Dr. Don Chapman Aug 2013

Noun-Adjective Compounds In Old English Poetry, Ryan Christensen, Dr. Don Chapman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One of the marks of Old English poetic style is the compound word. Malcolm Godden calls compounds “the essence of Anglo-Saxon poetic language.”(1) The lexicon of words exclusive to poetry includes many compounds, and many of these compounds are used only once in the Old English corpus. Thus it seems Anglo-Saxon poem-making consisted not only in using a large number of compound words, but in true compounding, in coining new words by combining two old words.

Ovid’S Poetic Voice In The Metamorphoses, Christopher Meldrum, Dr. Cecilia Peek Aug 2013

Ovid’S Poetic Voice In The Metamorphoses, Christopher Meldrum, Dr. Cecilia Peek

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Written around 8 A.D., the Metamorphoses by Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid) is considered a classic of both Roman and World culture. It holds a unique place in Classical literature, which has caused it to remain an object of focused interest in the academic community. Although Ovid declares it to be an epic, it nevertheless displays several striking differences in style and composition from traditional epics such as Virgil’s Aeneid and Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad. The text of the Metamorphoses is also intriguing to scholars because many of the myths it contains do not follow the traditional accounts given in other …

Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson Jul 2013

Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore how memory functions ecologically in the poetry of Tomas Tranströmer. The term ecology is useful because of its connotative associations with the natural world as well as its broader definition of being a network of relationships as they function within and relate to their environment. Throughout his oeuvre, Tranströmer positions memory as being an external presence with which he interacts primarily because he honors it as a living being and he feels a poetic responsibility to it. As such, he grapples with the challenges of representation, particularly the limitations of language. Ultimately, …

George Canning, Liberal Toryism, And Counterrevolutionary Satire In The Anti-Jacobin, Martha Thompson Jul 2013

George Canning, Liberal Toryism, And Counterrevolutionary Satire In The Anti-Jacobin, Martha Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most defining moments in the histories of British satire and the public sphere took place in the late 1790s in an abandoned house in Piccadilly. Here George Canning and several fellow conservatives began writing and circulating their weekly newspaper the Anti-Jacobin. Although the periodical has been critically neglected, it is a valuable model for exploring how literary (partisan) politicians attempted to form a rational and critical public sphere through their satiric poetry. Founded by George Canning and edited by William Gifford, the Anti-Jacobin seems to reflect a reactionary conservative's ideology and has been summarily dismissed because of …

Emerging Voices From The “Paper Cut” Country: Contemporary Salvadorian-American Poetry, Jonathan Garcia, Dr. Susan Howe Jun 2013

Emerging Voices From The “Paper Cut” Country: Contemporary Salvadorian-American Poetry, Jonathan Garcia, Dr. Susan Howe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When we studied modern American poets in Dr. Howe’s Poetry 319 class, I wondered if there were also Salvadoran-American poets out there, as both my parents immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador in the 1980s, fleeing a bloody civil war. At the same time I had also started writing a few family-themed poems. Finding William Archila, Leticia Hernandez-Linares, and Jorge Argueta’s work online, I felt an immediate kinship. Their works inspired much of my final where I submitted a chapbook as well as an essay exploring my place in the contemporary American scene. Dr. Howe saw me beginning to …
