War And Wilderness: Intersections With Patriotism And Masculinity In Canadian Second World War Alternative Service Work, Rosemary Giles
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis shows how ASW work in Canadian wilderness during the Second World War offered conscientious objectors the opportunity to prove themselves good citizens to the nation, and good men to themselves. Conscientious objectors’ work in Alternative Service Camps is used to demonstrate how masculinity and patriotism were constructed within the camps. The Down Home is an eclectic music venue in Johnson City, Tennessee. Established in 1976, it has since become a noteworthy club and the center of a mutually supportive community of people who keep the venue going while it in turn holds the community members together. Through the use of community theory, oral history theory, memorabilia, and oral history interviews, this thesis examines the way the Down Home community formed, and how it has continued to grow, develop traditions, and engage people both local and from afar. It also explores what the venue’s future may look like. While several influential …

Triply Sewn: Evoking Past, Present, And Future Selves In Guyanese Domestic Work, Courtney Paige Carr
Triply Sewn: Evoking Past, Present, And Future Selves In Guyanese Domestic Work, Courtney Paige Carr
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this article, I seek to illuminate how domestic work reveals elements of past, present, and future selves through an analysis of an interview I conducted with my mother about her experiences as a domestic worker in New York. My mother’s origins in Guyana are important as they illuminate the locational impacts of an economy impacted by the feminization of its proletariat and the emergence of neo-liberalization. In order to capture my mother’s existence as a historical being amidst an ever-evolving economy, oral narratives were methodologically employed. An examination of her past self within the oral history serves as …

The podcast features a close-reading of Gloria Anzaldúa’s use of counterstory in Borderlands, five oral history interviews, and …
