Surprisingly, the importance of music in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries has received little attention from modern scholars. Much has been written on the music which would have affected Shakespeare, but no one has focused his or her attention on Shakespeare's use of music as a dramatic device, i.e., as an aid to intensify and forward action, convey meaning, portray characters, and create atmosphere, such as a mood of mysticism or awe. This is a research paper to support a senior voice recital. It is important for a musician to know the background information for a piece to be performed, so that it can be better understood by the singer and thus better conveyed to the audience. Music needs to communicate a thought, a feeling and an intent. By carefully studying the style, the composer, and the text of a piece, and gaining knowledge of the period in which it was written, a musician can convey the thoughts, and feelings intended by the composer and develop a knowledgeable interpretation.

The Effects Of Music And Metronomic Beat On Heart Rate, Ratings Of Perceived Exertion, And Physical Endurance Prior To A Heart Rate Cut-Off, Cheryl Ann Louie

This study examined the effects of music and metronomic beat on heart rate (HR). ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). and physical endurance in healthy females ages 18 to 30. Volunteers were screened via a health questionnaire and the Astrand Work Test on a Monark bicycle ergometer. yielding a predicted aerobic working capacity (V02) of 28 mililiters or more. The 30 subjects were then randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions (music or metronome group) for a cycling test at 75% capacity. HR and Borg RPE were measured repeatedly, with a posttest measure of physical endurance (kilometers travelled). No significant …

Poetry: Toward Speaking For, Charles Hartman

The article presents an essay that finds the relation among jazz, song and poetry. In 1985 Larry Coryell and Emily Remler released an album of guitar duets. Coryell pioneered the "fusion" of jazz and rock styles in the mid-sixties, and has developed that border area ever since. Remler, a more recently risen star, has more closely followed a jazz line of development. The differentiation of the voice of the poem, its discovery of its own potential multiplicity, is a point arrived at, not begun from.

The Effect Of Headphone Music On Exercise Compliance, Gayle Ann Laszewski

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A study was designed to assess the effect of headphone music on running performance and enjoyment with its implications for increasing exercise compliance. A counterbalanced split-plot design was used with 18 University of the Pacific undergraduates receiving both treatment conditions: running with music and running without music. Measures included: (a) perceived enjoyment questionnaire scores; (b) running time; and (c) heart rate. It was expected that music would increase participants' rated running enjoyment, amount of time spent running, and also running intensity or heart rate, in comparison to running without music. Like most of my colleagues engaged in film studies rather than film practice, I occasionally allow myself to fantasize about the kind of films I would produce if I were a film maker. Several commercial films popular in the last fifteen years have inspired in me a bare bones scenario. My movie would have an all black “ensemble” cast. The plot would contain flashbacks tracing the events in the characters’ adolescence that solidified their friendship. Giovanni Maria Artusi is well known for his conservative role in the debate between advocates of the prima and seconda pratiche. Contemporary authors marvel at Artusi's audacity in criticizing the genius of Monteverdi. Though often viewed as a pedant, Artusi was a significant Italian theorist who understood ancient Greek theory and had innovative ideas for applying this ancient knowledge to modern practice.
