South Borneo As An Ancient Sprachbund Area, Alexander Adelaar
South Borneo As An Ancient Sprachbund Area, Alexander Adelaar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In South and Central Kalimantan (southern Borneo) there are some unusual linguistic features shared among languages which are adjacent but do not belong to the same genetic linguistic subgroups. These languages are predominantly Banjar Malay (a Malayic language), Ngaju (a West Barito language), and Ma’anyan (a Southeast Barito language). The same features also appear to some degree in Malagasy, a Southeast Barito language in East Africa. The shared linguistic features are the following ones: a grammaticalized form of the originally Malay noun buah ‘fruit’ expressing affectedness, nasal spreading in which N- not only nasalizes the onset of the first syllable …
Malagasy Time Conceptions, Casey Woodling
Malagasy Time Conceptions, Casey Woodling
Comparative Philosophy
In this paper I discuss Øyvind Dahl’s argument (1995,1999) for the conclusion that Malagasy people conceive of the future as coming from behind them and not as being before them as most worldviews do. I argue that we have good reason not to attribute this view to Malagasy people. First, it would mark an inefficient and anomalous way of keeping track of the past and future. Second, the linguistic and testimonial evidence presented by Dahl doesn’t support the conclusion. Even though this specific argument fails, Dahl has many enlightening things to say about Malagasy time conceptions, such as the various …
Madagascar: Transitions In Health Care, Margaret Altepeter
Madagascar: Transitions In Health Care, Margaret Altepeter
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Before actually visiting the country, the author theorized that as the health care system is being transformed from traditional to modern health care in the country of Madagascar, the traditional aspect of health care needs to be heavily incorporated in the transition. In this way, efficacy could be maximized and the cultural practices could be protected. After traveling to Madagascar in 2011 to conduct research as part of her study abroad program, the author found she had had underestimated the extent to which biomedicine was already present in the country. As she visited and interviewed traditional healers, toured biomedical hospitals, …

External Possession Meets Bare Nouns In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
External Possession Meets Bare Nouns In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
Ileana Paul
This paper examines apparent noun incorporation in Malagasy that is the result of external possession (possessor raising). It is shown that such incorporation is not derived via head movement or via compounding. Instead, it is argued that this is an instance of pseudo noun incorporation (Massam, 2001): the possessum is merged as an NP sister to the predicate. As for the structure of external possession, a non-movement analysis is proposed: the apparent possessor is generated as the specifier of a null possessive head and binds an empty argument position within the possessum. The resulting structure and meaning are shown to …

On The Topic Of Pseudoclefts, Ileana Paul

This paper presents arguments in favor of a pseudocleft analysis of a certain class of sentences in Malagasy, despite the lack of an overt wh-element. It is shown that voice morphology on the verb creates an operator-variable relationship much like the one created by wh-movement in free relatives in English and other languages. The bulk of the paper argues in favor of an inversion analysis of specificational pseudoclefts in Malagasy: a predicate DP is fronted to a topic position from within a small clause constituent. Moreover, it is shown that the same inversion occurs in equative and specificational sentences in …

Or, Wh- And Not: Free Choice And Polarity In Malagasy, Ileana Paul

This paper explores the distribution of Free Choice Items (FCI) and Negative Polarity Items (NPI) in Malagasy. Both FCIs and NPIs in Malagasy are syntactically complex: they are expressed by disjunctions of wh-words. It is shown that this morphosyntactic structure directly reflects their semantics. In other words, FCIs and NPIs are semantically as well as syntactically disjunctive. Moreover, the Malagasy data support analyses of disjunction as a polarity sensitive element.

Une Anaphore Nue En Malgache, Ileana Paul
Une Anaphore Nue En Malgache, Ileana Paul
Ileana Paul
This article examines the Malagasy anaphor tena ‘body’. It is shown that this anaphor is a bare noun and therefore has a highly restricted distribution. Tena is then contrasted with another anaphor-like element, ny …
Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul
Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul
French Studies Publications
This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). CT morphology licenses all arguments of the verb. Due to a requirement that all clauses have a subject (the Extended Projection Principle), some …

On Passive In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
Ileana Paul
This paper examines two different passive formations in Malagasy. Although one passive appears to promote certain types of adjuncts, it is shown that these adjuncts can appear in an NP argument position. Passive in Malagasy is thus argued to uniquely promote NP arguments to subject position.

Existentials And Partitives In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
Existentials And Partitives In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
