Movies and literature all over the world share some common aesthetics: militarization, romanticization of death, beauty of perfection, and even purity. What most don't think about is how these tropes rose to popularity due to Nazi Germany's propaganda films. This work describes these fascist aesthetics, and uses famous publications from the 1940s until now to paint just how common these themes are.

Yone Noguchi’s novels, The American Diary of a Japanese Girl and The American Letters of a Japanese Parlor-Maid, both published with the first decade of the twentieth century, have been the subject of study for scholars in the humanities for the past few decades. The research examines both novels in historical context and against his personal communications and his subsequently published works, understanding Noguchi not just as a Japanese immigrant but also a member of an American literary community. I compare the larger structing of the Diary to the works of his literary peers and mentors and demonstrate that understanding …

Science fiction (sci-fi) has existed for centuries, if not millennia, yet many people still do not view it as a respectable literary genre. In fact, many intellectuals claim that sci-fi does not count as true literature since it supposedly promotes mere adolescent escapism. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Sci-fi is a deep, nuanced genre that allows people to more fully engage with the world around them and to wrestle with their own hopes, fears, and desires. The purpose of this study was to index and examine the repertoire of choirs selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Conventions/Conferences between the years of 1991-2019. This is a replicated study of William Jones’s dissertation, An Index of Choral Music Performed during National Conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (1960-1987). The release of the final episodes of Game of Thrones was met with uproar, particularly in response to David Benioff and Weiss’s ending for the beloved Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. Her descent into madness has sparked controversy over whether she deserved this fate, with the unexplained slaughter of Kings Landing being yet another example of the showrunners rushing through the eighth and final season. Popular belief agrees either way that Dany’s downfall is attributed to the madness that runs through Targaryen bloodlines. Developing advantages of “new poetry” tendency in the context of Sohrob Sepehri’s inheritance scientifially have been analyzed. Theoretical sources concerning to poet’s creation have been comparatively investigated and brought into scientifi circulation. The system of artistic images of human and mystic ideas expressed in works of Sohrob Sepehri was studied and the meaning of human and mystic ideas were compared with the points of representatives of Sufim of the same direction. The poet’s points concerning problems of relation of human and nature were analyzed. The meaning of symbols and images peculiar to artistic thinking of poet was specifid.

Transitional Portraits: Syrian Immigrants Of The North American Mahjar In 'Abd Al-Masih Haddad's Prose, Benjamin Smith

This article argues that the 1921 collection of diasporic short stories Hikayat al-mahjar, written by ‘Abd al-Masih Haddad, makes a unique and notable contribution to mahjar literature by mobilizing formal literary techniques and innovative thematic content to capture a Syrian immigrant community engaged in a transitional moment in America. This paper situates Haddad (best known as the founder of the biweekly Arabic newspaper al-Saʼih, and a founding member of the literary society al-Rābiṭa al-qalamiyya) among his literary peers and provides an analysis of Hikayat al-mahjar that demonstrates the work’s points of convergence and divergence from the literary norms of the …

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions
Gender has often dictated the roles and responsibilities that individuals are expected to fulfill. Societies in general still adhere to a strict gender binary system, and have largely been either intolerant of or, at minimum, uncomfortable with those who break from such a system. The tomboy figure has been the recipient of societal judgement for what has been interpreted to be a subversion of and deviance from traditional gender norms, and this has played out in a variety of ways.
