Miss Murphy's fifth grade students at Pleasant Street School enjoyed working on science projects which dealt with their favorite animals. The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The vast body of Indian captivity narratives is known mostly to historians, anthropologists, and collectors of Americana. In the rare instances where informed scholarship has turned its attention to the narratives, emphasis has been upon the historical and cultural rather than the literary value of the tales. The Indian captivity narrative has been most commonly viewed as but a thread in the loose fabric of American cultural history, consisting of several "popular," sub-literary genres shaped and differentiated largely by the society for which the narratives were intended. Wisdom And Law In Old Testament Wisdom Literature, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer

In this article the author shows how the Jewish understanding of wisdom and law changed, especially in the intertestamental period. Wisdom, under the influence of Hellenistic thought, became almost a personal mediator between God and man, although it had originally been used to describe a certain style of living. The word "law" also underwent a change from its first meaning of guidance, to a later meaning in Deuteronomy of "the revelation of Yahweh's will to Israel," to the final identification of law with wisdom as the mediator between God and His creation, including especially man.

This is a study of how characters are developed in five

representative Victorian novels. Character is studied on the

basis of a moral stance which motivates actions. Because the

concept of the moral stance is primarily dependent upon the

individual character, the characters in this paper are studied

in relation to themselves. There are many events and relationships

in the novels which are not discussed here , aspects of

the respective narratives which would illumine other interpretations

but which are irrelevant to this particular study.
