A Critical Analysis Of Collard Darnell, Lis Bryn Crotts-Jones

Whittier Scholars Program

This project is an in-depth analysis of Collard Darnell, a character in Beth Henley’s play The Wake of Janey Foster. This project is a written biography created from both the play’s background information as well as the imagination of the scholar in order to better understand the character’s motives while performing as this character. This also includes a journal which was written during rehearsal and performance of the play. The totality of this biography is summed up through three sections: a character bio, character analysis, and synopsis of action.

A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen

Theses and Dissertations

American Indians in Mormon arts suffer from the imposition of the white man's traditional ideas, images and stereotypes. An examination of Mormon literature since 1941, Mormon hymns and music, and Mormon visual arts reveals little consideration of Native American values: tribal affiliation, significance of place and community, myth and ritual. While the mainstream of American art has incorporated Native American values into Indian representations, and even found a place for Native American artists, Mormon arts adhere to historical misinterpretations, despite a number of fine Mormon Native American artists.

Comedy: The Uncertain Terrain Of John Hawkes, Peter Johnson

English Faculty Publications

This dissertation examines the nature and function of

John Hawkes' comic method. Although most critics acknowledge

that Hawkes writes comedy, very few of them

agree on the moral nature of this comedy. Chapter I

examines these differing responses to Hawkes' work and

offers an alternative way of evaluating his humor, based

on his own and other critics' comments on comedy. This

chapter also suggests that our responses to Hawkes' humor

occur on an uncertain terrain where two or more, sometimes

opposite, reactions to a text clash, forcing us into continuous

moments of indecision.

The Danish-born physician Christian Fenger, whose career was recounted by William K. Beatty in the last issue of The Bridge, was one of many Scandinavian doctors in Chicago during the boom decades one hundred years ago. In a city bursting with immigrants, some Scandinavian doctors catered to their countrymen, and had in most cases to be content with modest financial and social rewards. Others, like Fenger, affiliated with hospitals and made strong contributions to medical science of the day. This project focuses on the history and definition of literature as well as the emerging trends and shaping influences. These styles are determined by examination of Greek, Latin, Japanese and Chinese literature and include trends from a variety of time periods such as Realism to Naturalism. Also discussed is literary theory, the importance of literature courses and different styles of teaching. Attached is also a teacher’s plan book meant to be used as a 1 semester syllabus for a literature course in High Schools or Graded Schools.

I was first introduced to Sufism after reading poems by Sufis like Hakim Jami and Jalaludin Rumi. After reading their poetry, I began exploring the possibility of what connection, if any, existed between the Sufi poets and western poets. The relevant material pertaining to this possible connection is scarce. Thus, I have expanded the topic of this paper to exploring the possible connections between Sufism and some selected pieces of western literature.
