My ORCA grant was given to fund a creative project of original poetry that would simultaneously fulfill the honors requirement. Since my funding, I have written nearly 40 new poems and been able to devote over 100 hours to the project with the financial independence the funding has given me. Alessandro Manzoni, one of the great Italian authors studied worldwide, is best known for his novel, The Betrothed. However, he wrote many other works that deserve careful study as well. While he is studied heavily in Italy, Manzoni often gets pushed aside in traditional American educations. The purpose of our project was to examine other works and correspondence in the context of his role in the beginnings of European Romanticism.

In an endeavor to improve my writing skills, I chose to write a full-length fantasy novel. The editing of which, as well as the critical feedback from my committee, would allow me to more fully understand the writing process and more accurately evaluate my abilities as a writer. The piece is meant as an entertaining work, though it also exhibits multiple themes that lend themselves toward a deeper meaning. The story explores oppression, parental abandonment, religious persecution, and the dangers of blind devotion to creed. The writing of this work was both fulfilling and affirming for me. As I began to investigate the concept of style in Composition curriculums, I quickly realized two things: style is difficult to define, and student input about style is virtually absent from the previous scholarship on style theory and pedagogy. This project, therefore, does not seek to end the debate about style. It seeks to do exactly the opposite. I want to extend the ongoing conversation about style even further, this time to include student voices. My project seeks to triangulate discussions about style to include voices from scholars, practitioners, and students. Students are too often an afterthought, receiving instruction based …

Rather than waiting decades to respond, novelists of nearly every literary genre began conceptualizing the AIDS epidemic shortly after the first documented case of the virus in the United States in 1981. Writers, feeling a sense of urgency, wasted little time constructing didactic texts that differ from much historical fiction in that they were written as the tragedy they are commenting on occurred. However, AIDS literature has changed as the disease has spread well beyond the gay communities of San Francisco and New York, causing people to reexamine their longstanding beliefs on masculinity, sexuality, and body politics.

The paper explores the relationship between gender, sexuality, and the construction of the space of the city in Puerto Rican short stories set in beauty salons. I argue that, through the relationships that develop between women in the beauty salon, and through the interactions between the beauty salon and other city spaces like the street, the strip club, the church and the family house. The protagonists of stories like “Milagros, call Mercurio” and “Pilar, tus rizos” politicize the space of the beauty salon, both gendering and queering it. In this way, they challenge some of the spatial tropes associated with …

At the heart of Gérard Gavarry’s writing are the questions of what power language holds, and what remains beyond the reach of expression. The two translations included here, excerpts from Allada (P.O.L, 1993) and Expérience d’Edward Lee, Versailles (P.O.L, 2009), share little with each other in terms of setting or structure, but explore similar questions of the role and limits of language in relation to defamiliarization, power, and fear. The inventive reflection on the nature of language, identity, and power that, woven into the fabric of the novel, makes Gavarry’s work some of the most compelling fiction coming out of …

Transatlantic Intimacies: The Homoerotic Affect Worlds Of Nineteenth-Century Print Culture, Melissa R. Pompili

The thesis argues that during the late-nineteenth century, an alternative means of same-sex erotic communication was conceived of in transatlantically published American and British künstlerroman novels written by female authors. This alternative discourse was communicated affectively to initiated readers by way of metaphorical descriptions of painting, music, accompanying illustrations, and photography, and these novels all participate in the work of moving non-normative sexuality into the public sphere at the turn of the century. Through readings of works by Kate Chopin, Julia Magruder, and Amy Levy, the thesis explores the ways that these affective interactions were constructed, and the manner in …
