Four letters of George Messer to his wife Lottie Messer, written March-May 1863 from Camp Hobson, Glasgow, Kentucky. He describes preparing the camp’s fortifications and accommodations, the arrival of reinforcements, the presence of nearby Confederates, his novel reading, and the prospects of obtaining a furlough. He relates the prevalence of fighting among the local citizenry and discusses affairs at home such as his debts and local elections. His letter of 16 April includes a sketch of the fort.

He confirms its availability, notes that it is air-cured rather than fired, and quotes a price of 20 cents per pound.

Williams, 33rd Indiana Infantry, to “friend Lorinda.” From Camp Calvert in Laurel County, Kentucky, he writes of illness among the soldiers and of preparing the camp’s defenses. He also writes of a nervous sentry’s mistaking a tree stump for an intruder, two orders to prepare for battle, and the capture of two Confederates. The letterhead includes an engraving of a flag-bearing woman and the slogan “Onward to Victory!”

Whither Education In Kentucky: The Challenges And Promises For The 21st Century, William E. Ellis

From its founding in 1792, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, compared with the states north of the Ohio River, followed a typically southern style of education. Before the Civil War a slave oligarchy controlled the political destiny of the state. After the Civil War, ironically because two-thirds of Kentuckians who fought in that war were on the Union side, the state became even more southern in many ways. Racism and segregation prevailed until the mid-1950s when the state began making rapid and successful strides to integrate its public and private schools. Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development
Kentucky has a rich cultural and artistic tapestry that is part of the economic future of the state. An important consideration of this future is the artist-member organizations that serve Kentucky creatives and how they work together collaboratively, both internally and externally. The objective of this study was to see how ten different organizations viewed themselves and interacted with their communities in the way in which they are structure, or lack a definite structure as is the case with several different groups. Through web analysis and a series of interviews with organizations that provide benefits to Kentucky artists, we learn …
