Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 229.  Photocopies of two letters by Barry while serving as Postmaster General under President Andrew Jackson.  Letter 27 November 1832 to James K. Polk relates to mail service in Tennessee.  Letter 7 February 1833 to Martin Van Buren concerns national politics. The bulk of the collection is research material, including other correspondence, that was typed or hand copied by J.F. Kany for the master’s thesis he wrote on Barry in 1934.

Casualty of Home is a novel-in-stories focusing largely on the displacement felt due to situation or family. Often, members of a family have trouble making connections with each other, for each has its own thoughts, desires and expectations. Still, they have something rudimentary in common: blood. Because they are related, family members are inclined to care for individuals they might not even know, much less love. Spanning three generations, the characters in Casualty of Home deal with the constraints of family, the pressures of adolescence, and the limitations of the rural Southern culture in which they live. Wheelwright, Kentucky was founded as a coal camp, a community built to serve the needs of the mining industry and intended to last only as long as the coal. Hundreds of communities such as this flourished in the Appalachian Mountains from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century. In 1930, however, Inland Steel Company purchased the town from Elk Horn Coal Company and began a period of community development that ushered in an era that some today refer to as Camelot, a golden age when all one could want could be found within the confines of a two-mile long …
