Gruder, Vivian, Sophia Maier Garcia

Vivian Gruder, born 1937, grew up on Fulton Avenue, across the street from Crotona Park. She fondly remembers the park and how, when her older siblings were young, people would take chairs and sit in the park to escape the heat. The area is described as a “Jewish Village,” though the schools were more mixed with Irish teachers and Italian and some classmates of color, though her friends were mostly Jewish. The Eileen Southern Collection contains documents and information that was drawn upon by Southern in her published books and articles and in the journal she and her husband, Joseph Southern, published from 1973 until 1990, The Black Perspective in Music. Also included are papers from when she served as Department Chair of the Afro-American Studies Department at Harvard, as well as correspondence between W. C. Handy and William Grant Still.

Letters from Harvey Bullfinch Lovell, Waldoboro, Maine, to his fiancé, Ethel Weeter, Louisville, Kentucky, in which he discusses her physical activity, his travel to Maine, study sessions at the Harvard University library, concerns about his thesis, and his own recreational and social activities during the summer of 1932. One letter from 1933 mentions the economic crisis at a local bank and how the depression was affecting attendance at a private school from which he graduated.

Finding aid and scan of a portion of a diary (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Collection 564. Diary kept by George Henry Sargent from 1 May 1851 to 10 January 1853. The Harvard student writes on a variety of subjects, including education, religion, historical events, travel, etc. Of particular interest is a three-month sojourn in 1852 with his sister, Lucy Baldwin (Sargent) Rupert in Louisville, Kentucky. While in Kentucky, he also visits Henderson and Mammoth Cave.

Interviews mention other people and places that Warren knew in Todd County, Kentucky. Also includes tapes of Robert Penn Warren giving a speech, reading some of his work, and an interview with Warren.

Sonia Bonsu was born in the Bronx on March 16, 1977. She attended public school in the Bronx, then the Calhoun School in Manhattan, and Harvard University as an undergraduate. She then attended law school at Fordham University, and she is currently the Director of Annual Giving at the Calhoun School. She was raised by both her parents, who were Ghanaian immigrants (Ashanti people).
