World Languages and Cultures Senior Capstones
This presentation is an analysis of the connections between the different literary movements of 19th century France, such as romanticism, realism, and modernism, and how they were initiated by the French revolutions of 1830 and 1848. It covers the impacts of these revolutions on different prolific 19th century French writers such as Alphonse de Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac, and Charles Baudelaire, and how each writer prompted their respective movements.

Manque De Réussite : Le Préjudice Dans Le Football Français, Will Bedell
World Languages and Cultures Senior Capstones
Despite being called The Beautiful Game, soccer in France has a few issues that take away from its beauty. This presentation aims to identify the causes and reasons behind the issues of racism, homophobia, and sexism which plague the French soccer scene. By looking at the causes of these from within French culture, history, and their society we can hope to understand why they exist as well as to establish the sources from which these issues arise.
Examining Liberty In France And The United States Through Religious Accommodations In Education, Carly Hitchcock
Examining Liberty In France And The United States Through Religious Accommodations In Education, Carly Hitchcock
Honors Projects
Liberty is a key value of the United States of America and France as seen in their key phrases « Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, » and “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. Liberty can be broken down into two forms, positive liberty, or the freedom to something, and negative liberty, or the freedom from something. The separation of church and state is a primary pillar of both France and the United States, as it determines how the government of each country interacts with different religions. Public education is a primary socialization experience of citizens in both countries, where …
"In The Footsteps Of Hercules": The Influence Of Classical Antiquity On Eighteenth-Century Militaries, Scott Madere
"In The Footsteps Of Hercules": The Influence Of Classical Antiquity On Eighteenth-Century Militaries, Scott Madere
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This project examines the pervasive influence of ancient Roman and Greek figures, historical events, literature, and military methods on the leaders and practitioners of eighteenth-century warfare. Rulers, generals, military theorists, and officers frequently consulted classical histories and literature for solutions to the common military problems of the period – tactical, operational, and strategic – showing remarkable faith in ancient military methods despite their growing dependence on gunpowder weaponry and related technologies. This dissertation examines why this was the case and concludes that classical antiquity not only maintained the credibility of its wisdom in the context of modern warfare, but also …
Heroes, Victims, And Future Citizens: Representations Of French Children During World War I, Megan R. Outtrim
Heroes, Victims, And Future Citizens: Representations Of French Children During World War I, Megan R. Outtrim
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
The effects of total war society in France during WWI dramatically altered the daily lives of both adults and children, witnessing increasing levels of patriotic rhetoric, wartime propaganda, and anti-German sentiment. Children were often made the focal point of this propaganda, as they represented the future of the nation. As such, three specific representations of children emerge from WWI propaganda in France: the heroic child, the victimized child, and the malleable future citizen. Some of these representations were depicted in propaganda meant for children specifically, while others were depicted in propaganda meant to mobilize adults in the name of children. …

Louise Farrenc: A Woman Composer's Voice Rising Out Of Obscurity, Allika Polowchak
All Zyzzogeton Presentations
Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was a prolific composer, performer, and teacher of art music in Romantic-era France. Widely regarded during her lifetime for her incredible natural talent and hard work, her compositions fell into obscurity after her death due to general disinterest in women’s contributions to art. As Louise Farrenc started to become more recognized in the later 20th century, efforts were focused on reviving her instrumental works, but little is known about her choral and vocal pieces to this day.
Fighting France: The Unsung Heroes And Forgotten Victims Of Free French Africa In Wwii, Elizabeth Crow
Fighting France: The Unsung Heroes And Forgotten Victims Of Free French Africa In Wwii, Elizabeth Crow
Tenor of Our Times
The efforts of native African efforts against the Vichy France and Nazi regimes go unrecognized in the context of Allied progress in the Second World War. The stories of Fighting France, or General de Gaulle’s forces of Free French Africa, reflect the values fought for throughout the war. Recent research has better shed light on the topic and in deserving of further exploration. Academic efforts have allowed better questions to be asked of Fighting France and the degree to which their participation affects the continent today and global systems at large.

The Veneration Of Charlemagne In Divine Kingship: From Charlemagne To The Last Crusade, Lindsay Michelle Olson
The Veneration Of Charlemagne In Divine Kingship: From Charlemagne To The Last Crusade, Lindsay Michelle Olson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The current scholarship on medieval European sacral kingship does not address the significance of Charlemagne’s legacy on the practice but rather it enshrines him in the public imagination. This dissertation explores the means by which Charlemagne influenced the development of sacral kingship, thereby contributing to both focused and broad scholarship. Charlemagne’s legacy, primarily reflected in romanticized literature, impacted the development and practices of sacral kingship in France and England most explicitly demonstrated during the period spanning from the Norman Conquest to the 15th century. The research is based, in part, on the interpretation of contemporary fantastic, preferential, and romanticized literature …

« Iel Dit Quoi ? » : A Study Of The Origins And Evolution Of Francophone Gender-Neutral Pronouns And Inclusive Language And A Discussion Of French Versus Canadian Acceptance, Alyssa Claire Langlois
Honors Theses
Our interpretation of human gender identity has never been constant. And with it, language has always shifted in order to best represent the many different gender identities and expressions that people associate with themselves. This research examines the current gender-inclusive and gender-neutral French language that exists in both France and Canada. I use three factors: occupational nouns, l’écriture inclusive, and neopronouns, especially iel, the most common. In this thesis, I evaluate what exists, what has yet to be accepted, and the many different public reactions. I analyzed statements from official language offices, current event articles, and opinions pieces, as well …
Differences In French Law Pertaining To Refugees From Former Colonies: A Case Study Of North Africa And Indochina, Lauren Bergin
Differences In French Law Pertaining To Refugees From Former Colonies: A Case Study Of North Africa And Indochina, Lauren Bergin
Honors Theses
Colonial relations between colonizer and colonized are an interesting yet often understudied part of the legal field. This thesis will focus on these links within the relationship between France and two of its former colonies: North Africa and Indochina. In order to discover more information on these relationships, I take a historical approach focusing on legal documents, debates, and decrees, both from the French government and international bodies and representatives such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The resulting discoveries show that French legal documents were far more concerned with North Africa compared to Indochina, both regarding asylum …
Challenging The "Unexceptional": Marguerite Of Provence, Thirteenth-Century Queenship, And Power, Katie Despeaux
Challenging The "Unexceptional": Marguerite Of Provence, Thirteenth-Century Queenship, And Power, Katie Despeaux
History ETDs
Marguerite of Provence, wife to Saint Louis IX of France, has long been overlooked or negatively characterized by historians. Due to the unique circumstances of her mother-in-law’s political reach and her sister’s role as queen of England, Marguerite was limited by her husband and his court in her access to power. Traditionally understood as a passive queen, Marguerite’s expression of power through motherhood, curated images, and emotional performance can be better understood through Theresa Earenfight’s paradigm of gender and power. In a series of comparisons between Marguerite and her mother-in-law, sister, and Egyptian counterpart during the Seventh Crusade, Marguerite’s role …

From Hellfighters To Tuskegee Airmen, Austin Teague
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The First and Second World Wars were enormous facilitators for drawing people from all over to enlist. Nowhere was this more the case than in the United States after it entered the war in 1916, and later in 1941. Although a vast majority of those who joined were white, a smaller percentage were African Americans. Due to the racial relations of the time, they were separated into their own black only regiments. The 369th Infantry Regiment would come to be known as the Harlem Hellfighters and were sanctioned to work in the French Army. The 99th Pursuit Squadron, also known …

The Court Of Versailles Under Lou’S Xiv: Home To The Desperate, The Destitute, And The Debauched, Evelyn L. Cooper
Young Historians Conference
“A nobleman, if he lives in his providence, lives free but without substance; if he lives at Court, he is taken care of, but enslaved.” A quote by a contemporary of Louis XIV, King of France and resident of Le Château de Versailles, Jean de La Bruyère reveals the more intricate reality of the Court in seventeenth century France. Versailles was not merely a royal spectacle, nor another French palace, it was a highly politicized project undertaken by Louis XIV with the express intent to devastate the noble class. This paper explores the means by which Louis weaponized Versailles and …

A Fake Future: The Threat Of Foreign Disinformation On The U.S. And Its Allies, Brandon M. Rubsamen
Global Tides
This paper attempts to explain the threat that foreign disinformation poses for the United States Intelligence Community and its allies. The paper examines Russian disinformation from both a historical and contemporary context and how its effect on Western democracies may only be exacerbated in light of Chinese involvement and evolving technologies. Fortunately, the paper also studies practices and strategies that the United States Intelligence Community and its allied foreign counterparts may use to respond. It is hoped that this study will help shed further light on Russian and Chinese disinformation campaigns and explain how the Intelligence Community can efficiently react.

Between Censure And Liberalization: The Press And Publishing In Second Empire France, Oana M. Iancau
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Napoleon III's ambition to construct a paradoxical liberal empire encountered a major obstacle in the realm of the press, which chafed under censure and forced the Emperor to consider the ramifications that absolutism would have for his reign, given France's revolutionary history. The article traces the history of censure under the Second Empire, to identify Napoleon III's motivations for liberalization and its consequences for his regime.

The Enemy Of My Enemy Is My Friend: George Washington And France, Brent Kyle Meyers
The Enemy Of My Enemy Is My Friend: George Washington And France, Brent Kyle Meyers
Masters Theses
This thesis looks at how George Washington was able to overcome his personal animosity towards France and ally himself with them during the American Revolution. This animosity originates with Washington’s early interactions with the French during the French and Indian War. It examines how the events during Washington first miliary mission and journey to Fort Le Boeuf, his first military conflict and surrender at Jumonville Glenn, and his service under General Braddock all helped develop that animosity. However, the overcoming of these early negative feelings for Washington was the culmination of three key factors. The first major guiding force was …

The Black Ancestral Artist Path, Cerina Zuleica Shippey
Senior Projects Spring 2023
The Black Ancestral Artist Path is a project dedicated to uncovering the migratory pattern between Black American Creatives from NY to Paris. Why has this trend continued today from those of the Lost Generation? What about France entices the American? And how does living there change their art and sense of self? This project also compared Black French artists and their understanding of the French colonial empire. When these two groups are brought together, how do they learn from one another? Black Americans are forced to reckon with the both the freedom and the privilege they experience being able to …

Establishing The Anglo-French Condominium In Egypt, Musaeva S. I, Gadzhibekova R. G
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
The article highlights the problems that Egypt had during the construction of the Suez Canal due to the financial enslavement of Egypt by the financiers of England and France and the imposition of bank loans and credits for which Egypt had a large financial debt. While the simple Egyptian people paid for such loans, the European bankers made huge profits. The construction of the Suez Canal, including the cost of shares, sanctions, opening costs and other expenses, cost Egypt 400 million francs. The article covers the actions of Khedive Ismail, the European financial hegemony over Egypt, and the establishment of …

This commentary reminds the interdependence between the global and the local and how local identities are formed. We discuss the accessibility of local identities and cultures.
Memoirs Of The Foreign Legion, Maurice Magnus, D.H. Lawrence
Memoirs Of The Foreign Legion, Maurice Magnus, D.H. Lawrence
Zea E-Books Collection
Maurice Magnus was 39 years old when he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion to join the fight against Germany in World War I. Magnus was an American expatriot living in Rome—a theatrical agent, tutor, newspaper correspondent, writer, editor, and literary entrepreneur. He soon discovered his error—the Legion he found consisted largely of German exiles, prison-avoiding felons, and contemptuous French officers. Magnus spent about six weeks training in North Africa before a transfer to southern France provided the opportunity to desert and flee back to Italy. The Memoirs recounts his brief disenchanted tenure as a Legionnaire. After his military service …

Integrated Or Excluded: The Effects Of French Integration Policies On Immigrant Communities From 2000 To 2020, Johanna N. Soleil
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
Few issues are as important to European politics as integration, though research into the actual effect of integration policies on immigrant communities is sparse in Europe and especially in France. This paper examines through the data available to researchers how immigrant communities compare to native populations in terms of cultural, health, and economic characteristics. To this end the paper is organized as follows: the first section introduces the French political context and the cultural attitude towards immigrants. Next, the various methods of analysis are presented, and each of the previously mentioned attributes is analyzed in the French context as well …

From Perfect Victims To Collateral Damage: How Nigerian Women Are Implicated In And Impacted By Contemporary French Anti-Trafficking Policies And Discourse, Oladunni Patricia Oduyemi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Although the Nordic Model has been embraced by the international anti-trafficking movement, recent studies, and closer examinations of France’s approach to the issue of sex trafficking reveal a strong anti-migrant and anti-sex work bias. In this thesis, I use studies of the impacts of France’s 2016 anti-trafficking bill on migrant sex workers, feminist critiques of neo-abolitionism and the Nordic Model, and examples of France’s hypocritical anti-migrant position, to explore how Nigerian women are harmed by the contemporary French fight against sex trafficking. The pervasive influence of anti-sex work radical feminism on anti-trafficking protocols which define the sex industry as analogous …
The Battle Of Tours Reconsidered, Paul Aitchison
The Battle Of Tours Reconsidered, Paul Aitchison
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
This paper examines the Battle of Tours/Poitiers in 732 between the Merovingian Mayor of the Palace, Charles Martel, and the Umayyad governor-general of al-Andalus in modern-day Spain, Abdul Rahman Al-Ghafiqi. Since the pivotal works of Sir Edward Gibbons were published in 1776, the battle has been seen as keeping Europe from falling completely to Islam. More recent scholarship highlights the battle as pivotal in Charles's quest to consolidate power in his ultimately successful bid to create a new power in western Europe, the Carolingian dynasty, which would eventually be created in the crowning as the Holy Roman Empire his grandson, …
