This paper aims to describe the artistic value of sports photography. This paper includes academic theories and themes like the halo effect, theories of seeing (scopophilia, Laura Mulvey, male gaze, sporting gaze, gaze theory), and medium theory. Creative themes include architecture, gender in sports (Title IX), and film, digital, and experimental photography. Sports discussed include men's and women's ice hockey, baseball, american football, men's basketball, and men's soccer.

As a queer Jew who grew up surrounded by immigrant cultures and communities, I find myself in a liminal space between my identities and the dominant culture of my country– one where my perspective on gender and my cultural experiences aren’t fully understood by the world I exist in. Comics and cartoons are an explorational platform for concepts of reality and identity; they are one of very few spaces where I see my identities explored with so much depth and care.

Rebecca Klundt is a Salt Lake City native and graduate from Brigham Young University with a BFA in 2D studio art, an emphasis on painting and power tools. Her works are built from reclaimed wood which she “reorganizes” into beautiful mosaics. Her work is found in the collections of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Utah Arts and Museums, Salt Lake Community College, and Delta Airlines. She currently exhibits with David Ericson Gallery SLC, Art Space Warehouse in LA and Foursquare Gallery, as well as on her website rebeccaklundt.com and @rebeccaklundt on instagram.

Portland-based artist Curtis Bay creates drawings, paintings, and collages in watercolor, oil, and mixed media. His work is expressive and personal, inspired by the tension between competing realities. His subjects are often from his own circle of friends and family and the natural world, but he freely jumps between figuration and abstraction. He received a BFA in Art with Honors from BYU in 1994. He was part of the Inscape staff at least in Winter of 1988 and designed some killer merch.

Over the last decade, generative artificial intelligence models have advanced significantly and provided the public with several tools to create new works of art. However, the true authorship of these works has been debated due to their training on web-scraped data. Serving as an analogy to these larger models, Poster, Performed is an interactive artificial intelligence exhibition project that uses image assets submitted by the public to create poster compositions with custom image processing algorithms. Wild clay is an abundant and diverse material that has a long history with both utilitarian and decorative uses. Since the industrial revolution, processed and manufactured clay bodies have become commonplace. However, there has been a recent resurgence in the use of wild clays in contemporary ceramic practices for the purposes of material connection, accessibility, and sustainability.

This thesis explores the abundant wild clays of Georgia including the sourcing, processing, testing, of these materials. It also shows examples of the portfolio of work that was created with this research.

Contemporary queer artists enact futures that resist abjection and reevaluate the state of our hierarchical classifications of human beings by invoking posthuman drag - constructed assemblages of identities - and combining them with speculative fiction, mythologies, and folklore. Devan Shimoyama, a queer bi-racial Black-identified artist, drags images of parts of his body to present queer Black masculinity in multitudes of ways while simultaneously imbuing them with magical powers and crafting their mythological origins. In recent years, broad access to digital communication tools provided by the “tech boom” has forced arts and culture nonprofit organizations (ACNPO) to transition to social media and mobile applications to engage audiences. While various approaches focus on building breadth (i.e. recirculation of content) and depth (i.e. replies) of engagement, ACNPO use multimedia to spur discussion and dissemination of their mission. Maine has played a vital but largely unacknowledged role in the development of American modernism as both an environmental and cultural repository of inspiration. By examining the artistic and pedagogical tensions present in the Ogunquit, Maine art colony, this thesis explores Maine as an inspiration point for many of the foundational artists and teachers of the American modernist art movement. The gap in literature addressing the question, “why Maine?” leaves a void in the scholarship of American history and art history. She began painting in oil during her time at BYU studying Humanities in the late 80’s (graduating in 1991 after her mission to Peru) and picked it up again more seriously when her children entered school full time in 2014. Gary Hall has two art degrees from BYU: a BFA with an emphasis in ceramics completed in 1995, as well as an MFA in ceramics completed in 2007. In the years between his degrees and up to the present time Gary has worked at bronze casting foundries in the Utah Valley area learning all the aspects of transforming clay sculptures into cast bronze. Gary served in Utah Army National Guard from 2011 to 2017 and has stated that many of his experiences as a soldier have influenced his art. Men die by suicide nearly four times more than women, with higher rates among artists. There has been an increase in the rate of suicide over the years, primarily linked to depression and mounting societal expectations imposed upon men. The prevalence of social media and the awareness that comes with indicates that the issue of suicide may never disappear unless action is taken.
