Inspired by Italo Calvino’s (almost) homonymous writing, this short essay suggests a formal perspective to complement the typical categorisation of classical results in mathematics on aesthetic bases. The traditional proof that √2 is not a rational number provides a simple example of proof mining. When studied through the tools of logic, that proof has also led to designing new systems for formal proving based on cyclic proofs. This example thus supports the central thesis of this essay that reading the classics of mathematical proofs enables us to acquire a taste for mathematical beauty and can open new directions in mathematics …

Making Mathematical Art Via The Harmonic And Perturbed Harmonic Functions, Mehmet Pakdemirli

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Starting from the definition of a harmonic function series, we define a new series which we call the perturbed harmonic function series. We explore the relationship of the new series with the Weierstrass and Riemann fractal functions as well as its convergence and differentiability properties. We then illustrate the potential of the harmonic functions in generating complex figures that sometimes resemble natural objects, with explicit numerical examples.

We model prejudice in the context of an iterated prisoner’s dilemma tournament. Prejudice here is defined as the inability to distinguish amongst members of an identifiable group. We run a computer simulation where agents of one of two groups with defined strategies are randomly matched against each other. The agents either cooperate with or defect against the agent they are matched with. Our focus is on agents who play an unprejudiced version of the Tit-for-Tat strategy (cooperate with any player in the first encounter, and then apply the same strategy [defect or cooperate] that the opposing player played against them …

How Did Cauchy Prove His Integral Theorem? A Historical Reconstruction For Education Research, José Gerardo Piña-Aguirre, Rosa María Farfán Márquez

In his article “Mémoire sur les Intégrales Définies, prises entre des limites imaginaires” of 1825, Cauchy proves that the integral of a complex function f defined on complex numbers is independent of the path of integration if the function f remains finite and continuous along the chosen path. In contemporary literature that analyzes the mathematics of Cauchy, the specific mathematical process that allowed Cauchy to prove this result is not explicitly presented. The purpose of this manuscript is to communicate a symbolic-algebraic derivation that justifies the narrative argument used by Cauchy to support his proof, thus hopefully filling this gap. …

The history of titration dates back to Archimedes who established that an object submerged in a liquid displaces an amount of liquid whose weight is equal to the buoyant force acting on the object. Since then, many scientists and engineers have tried to optimize his approach or devise new instruments for titration purposes. Omar Khayyam (1048–1123), in addition to designing a hydro-static balance, developed mathematical approaches for titration of binary alloys, that is, alloys made up of only two elements. We present a detailed look at one small section of a premodern algebra manuscript from circa 1365 C.E. The manuscript, Tratatto dell’Alcibra Amuchabile (Anonimo), is written in the Tuscan vernacular, with no symbols, no punctuation, and wildly inconsistent (pre-printing press) spellings. We present some of the hurdles to translating this “rhetorical algebra” followed by an annotated translation of one of its algebra rules, Rule 5, through which we learn the methods and mindset of algebra that preceded and seeded the breakthroughs in algebra of the 16th century. The Loan In Moroccan Arabic: Formal Process And Cultural Requirements, Malika Rafiq

Borrowing in Moroccan Arabic is part of the dynamics of language contact. The article focuses on lexical borrowings from French and what they become once incorporated into usage: how they change, how they integrate, and especially how prefixation and suffixation in Moroccan Arabic can signal a high level of appropriation. The analysis, organized into four axes, highlights that integration does not happen all at once: a borrowing goes through several stages, and once stabilized, it evolves phonologically, morphologically, and semantically, just like words in the language.

What About Berber Studies? Archival Materials Around Saïd Cid Kaoui’S Dictionaries, Ouahmi Ould-Braham

Based on archival documents, this article sheds light on a key moment in the history of Berber studies through the career of the Berberist Saïd Cid Kaoui (1859–1910) and the making of his bilingual dictionaries (Tamâheq/Tuareg and Berber varieties of Morocco). It reconstructs the scholarly and institutional context (orientalism, military and university settings, the École supérieure des lettres d’Alger), the publication process, and exchanges with expert reviewers at the Ministry. The analysis highlights issues of terminology, transcription, and standardization, and shows how these lexicographic tools helped structure and disseminate research on Berber varieties.

This study analyzes the construction of Russian cultural diplomacy in news media coverage of art exhibitions. Russia-Indonesia: Within the Framework of Art. The research uses the method Critical Discourse Analysis with Norman Fairclough's model and concept soft power Joseph Nye and the skeleton Taxonomy of Soft Power from Ohnesorge to map actor relations in cultural diplomacy practices. This thesis examines depictions of twenty-three owners’ “black”-type coffins depicted in tomb wall paintings from eleven Theban tombs and on eight Theban papyri dating from the Eighteenth Dynasty to the early Twenty-first Dynasty. Four research methods are employed: descriptive, analytical, comparative, and contextual. First, a stylistic and iconographic analysis identifies four phases in the evolution of the “black”-type coffins depicted in the funerary art and explores the factors that influenced these representations by comparing them with actual “black”-type coffins and relevant artistic representations. This study examines the portrayal of domestic violence against women in the Thai drama Tie Me (K)not (2022) using Johan Galtung’s theory of violence, which categorizes violence into direct, structural, and cultural forms. Through qualitative content analysis, the research identifies how the drama depicts these forms of violence, reflecting broader societal issues in Thailand. The findings reveal explicit instances of direct violence, such as physical and psychological abuse, systemic structural violence through institutional failures in justice and support systems, and cultural violence rooted in patriarchal traditions that justify gender inequality. Bilingualism has multiple benefits, however, non-native English speakers in the United States often lose their minority language. Three research poems are created as an autoethnographic response to feedback on a research article on the author’s experiences as a gender non-conforming person in women’s public restrooms.  The feedback loop includes the sharing of lived experiences by others and theoretical (why?) discussions in the context of the gendered policing and politicalization of women’s restrooms.  The first found poem includes words, phrases, and descriptions of images used to label spaces designated as women’s restrooms.  The second prose poem recounts the author's experiences through a reframing of risk to women’s health, understanding the cultural context of male entitlement and White supremacy, …
