In interwar America, the relatively young profession of dentistry was developing rapidly. As the government, health institutions, and social organizers focused more intently on notions of national wellness, questions about how to achieve a healthy smile—and what a healthy smile should look like—proliferated. Groups like the National Dental Association worked to establish rigorous standards of technique, define ethical behavior, and encourage dentists to develop business acumen, yet the surprising proliferation of blues songs about dubious dentists tricking unassuming clients, or about fraught love affairs allegorized by disastrous dental exams, highlights the equivocal nature of many developments in early dentistry.

Dental phantoms have been used in dental education since the late nineteenth century. These pedagogical objects – particularly those from the first half of the twentieth century – have today enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the art and film worlds. After first outlining the history and pedagogical purposes of the dental phantom, this article examines what the artistic and filmic attractions to the aesthetics of these objects can tell us about fear, the mouth and the face, and dental education. Modern-day research ethics training often begins with a discussion of the medical research atrocities committed by Nazi health care professionals and the resulting 10-principle Nuremberg Code, which is often considered to be the beginning of modern-day medical research regulations. It is occasionally mentioned that Nazi dentists also conducted unethical research in the concentration camps, and a few were brought to trial. In this manuscript, I compare two studies (one medical and one dental) conducted after World War II that violated the Nuremberg Code.

This case study describes the integration of a board-certified music therapist into two specialty dental clinics at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Eastman Institute for Oral Health. Initiated in collaboration with the Eastman Performing Arts Medicine Center, the effort reflects a humanistic and biopsychosocial approach to dentistry that leverages music therapy to reduce anxiety, improve patient experience, and support better clinical outcomes.

Before implementation, monthly interdisciplinary planning meetings were held, bringing together dental faculty, research and administrative staff, and the music therapy team. These meetings built a shared understanding of each clinic’s unique patient population, workflow, and clinical priorities, …

The (tanwiin تنوين) in Arabic is a suffix added to the noun, after the case vowel. In this article, we will attempt to make some observations on the definition of the content and nature of tanwiin in the Arabic language and its classifications as mentioned by Arabic grammarians. We will also ask some questions about its linguistic status and its complementary distribution with the determinant (al ال) in the common name in Arabic.

The Lexical Richness Of Abdelkebir Khatibi’S Fictional Works, Abdellah Kaaouas

This article presents a stylo-statistical analysis of lexical richness across the seven novels of Abdelkébir Khatibi. The objective is to establish an objective classification of these works by quantifying the ratio between word occurrences (N) and distinct vocabulary terms (V). The methodology is based on a comparative approach utilizing several mathematical models: Guiraud’s formula, Muller’s binomial law, and, most notably, Brunet’s [W] index, selected for its ability to neutralize the influence of text length. This article examines the role of symbolism in the novelistic universe of Tahar Ben Jelloun, a major figure of French-language Maghrebi literature. After outlining the genre’s key features (cultural hybridity, identity issues, and voices of the marginalized), the study offers a thematic reading of recurrent symbols. It focuses on pairs such as earth/sea and red/blue, as well as the numbers seven/five, analyzing their occurrences, contexts, and connotative values (origins, exile, memory, violence, desire, and the sacred). The paper shows how these signs structure Ben Jelloun’s poetics and invite critical interpretation of social realities.

This article examines how gender relations are deconstructed in selected essays by Abdelkébir Khatibi and Fatema Mernissi, situating their work within Moroccan debates of the 1980s and 1990s on social change and the family. It analyzes writing strategies and theoretical resources—literary and sociological—used to question gender as a socially acquired performance. Particular attention is given to Mernissi’s texts, where multiple female voices (songs, interviews, and familial figures) are made audible and reworked into a political reading of rights, labor, and access to public space. This contribution will be mainly dedicated to the deictic d when used with stative verbs and its ability to ‘energize’ the state they express. From the data of a kabyle variety of Toudja, that of the iԑemranen situated to the north west of Bejaia, it will be shown that, thanks to its kinetics and its actualizing function, this deictic allows the verb that it is used with and which initially expresses a result to shift to the expression of the operation that leads to it.

Drawing on Abdelhak Serhane’s novel L’homme qui descend des montagnes, this article investigates the family as both a privileged site of socialization and a space where gendered power relations are exercised. Using gender theory as an analytical framework, it uncovers patriarchal mechanisms that structure the father/mother relationship and sustain an unequal hierarchy between the sexes. The father figure is portrayed as authoritarian and violent, asserting mastery over the household, while the mother is confined to silence, obedience, and an internalized dependence. Through a multidisciplinary approach - ranging from grammatical morphology (Arabic, Berber) to literary semiotics (Khatibi, Ben Jelloun, Serhane)- the authors deconstruct power mechanisms and social norms. By analyzing textual subversion and gender dynamics, this volume offers a critical reflection on the mutations of Maghrebian society and the emergence of an imaginary of emancipation.

Justice For Animals In Climate Change Integrated Assessment Models, Bob Fischer, Avram Hiller

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Integrated assessment models (IAMs) exclude individual non-human animal welfare, despite clear evidence that climate change will harm billions of animals through habitat loss, extreme weather, and ecosystem disruption. We argue that this is a significant moral oversight. Further, incorporating animal welfare into IAMs is technically feasible, using traditional economic methods or novel ones. Crucially, accounting for animal welfare in IAMs need not undermine considerations of justice for humans.

This article aims to test and compare different statistical methods applied to literary texts in order to measure the lexical proximity between two texts of a corpus. The Hyperbase functions will be tested, the measurement of the "intertextual distance" which is based on Jaccard's indices and Labbé's method but also the evaluation of the "lexical connection". The tree analysis, which highlights the classification hierarchy of texts, will be used to present the distribution of high and low frequencies as a criterion of differentiation. The body of experimentation gathers the novels of Tahar Ben Jelloun (1973-2010).

Since the late 1980s, artistic and literary creation in Morocco has been defined by an aesthetic and formal hybridity, operating through a fusion of traditional heritage and the imperatives of modernity. This "metis" production, marked by multiculturalism and the use of new technologies, deconstructs academic canons to generate multidisciplinary works (visual arts, literature, digital media). In literature, this heterogeneity manifests as the fragmentation of genres, the interpenetration of orality and literacy, and a heterolinguism (code-switching between French, Arabic, and English) that reflects a multipolar identity. We suggest in this article studying the proper noun in the romantic work of Guy de Maupassant. For that purpose, we shall approach the problem of the definition of the proper noun which remains so far the object of several debates. Then, we shall distinguish three functions of the proper noun: the reference function, the function vocative and the function of appointment. We shall present, finally, a thematic classification of the proper nouns appearing in the corpus of the romantic works of Maupassant, supplied by the Hyperbase software.
