How To Make Tamales: Stories, Jeanette Colby May 2026

How To Make Tamales: Stories, Jeanette Colby

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In all its intersectionality, I see my thesis as a female journey of identity and maturation. A common theme in my writing always leads back to my upbringing in some way; my history, memories, and beliefs inevitably plague the storytelling animal that lives within me. These different kinds of narratives represent all the parts of my identity. At the same time, the fictional scenes allow me to dramatize and interpret specific life events, while the mythic narratives provide a symbolic framework for exploring psychological and spiritual truths that might transcend conventional logic. Almost all of these pieces reflect various aspects …

Obsequium, And Other Stories, Jesse Epps May 2026

Obsequium, And Other Stories, Jesse Epps

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis collection, Obsequium, and Other Stories, explores the emotional and social consequences of poverty, racism, addiction, grief, and generational trauma through a blend of literary fiction, horror, and postmodern satire. Drawing heavily from the author's upbringing in the American South, the collection examines how people navigate systems of oppression while struggling to maintain identity, dignity, and agency. The accompanying critical preface reflects on the author's creative development, personal hardships, and the literary influences that shaped the work, including horror writers such as Stephen King and postmodern authors like Chuck Palahniuk and Percival Everett. Across the stories, recurring themes of …

The Mouse At The Border: Magic, Money, And Manufactured Identity, Ricardo Manuel Hinojosa May 2026

The Mouse At The Border: Magic, Money, And Manufactured Identity, Ricardo Manuel Hinojosa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the methods by which The Walt Disney Company constructs and negotiates representations of Latine, gender, and queer identities within contemporary animation, with a particular emphasis on Coco (2017), Encanto (2021), and Wish (2023). Through a critical and intersectional lens, this research posits that Disney strikes a balance between cultural specificity and global market appeal, often leading to representations that are visually elaborate yet narratively limited. Both Coco and Encanto showcase a significant engagement with cultural traditions and themes such as memory and generational trauma; however, they ultimately fall short of thoroughly addressing systemic issues like colonialism and …

Microcosms & Warscapes, Heather J. Lathers May 2026

Microcosms & Warscapes, Heather J. Lathers

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This poetry collection features sensory-centered writing and common objects, scenes, and interactions to authentically capture the multi-perspective and nuanced experiences of wartime. Detailed language is critical when poets become mouthpieces for those enduring war's pain. Focusing closely on items such as teacups, boots, bones, mud, rice, and rats creates a kind of intimacy not often found in war writing. Specific conflicts addressed include World War I, Vietnam, and The Cambodian Genocide. The poems here, in various forms and voices, aim to spotlight the lost, marginalized, abused, and forgotten-- the much-needed humanity war stories tend to neglect. Ultimately, these pieces seek …

The preface is a critical and aesthetic-based discussion on how the novel came to fruition. The essay includes discussion on the …

Public Art And The Future Of Remembrance In Contested Spaces, Rebecca Ann Munoz May 2026

Public Art And The Future Of Remembrance In Contested Spaces, Rebecca Ann Munoz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the memorial landscape of El Paso, Texas as a contested site of public memory, cultural identity, and community representation. Situated at the U.S.-Mexico border, El Paso functions as a palimpsest of layered histories shaped by colonization, militarization, and ongoing negotiations of belonging. Drawing on memory rhetoric and composition studies, and art history, the paper raises critical questions about community engagement, representational equity, and the politics of visibility in public art processes. The paper ultimately calls for a deeper examination of the rhetorical strategies and institutional frameworks that shape memorial meaning-making at the local level, with broader implications …

The Creature From Space: A Science Fiction Musical, Monroe Nathaniel Oxley May 2026

The Creature From Space: A Science Fiction Musical, Monroe Nathaniel Oxley

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

My thesis examines how the musical The Creature from Space uses metatheatre, musical form, and science fiction to explore identity, conformity, and social control within a fictional 1950s Texas town. Centered on Lilly, a young woman struggling between loyalty to her hometown and the desire for personal freedom, the musical reimagines conventions of the Golden Age American musical while critiquing the ideological structures embedded within them. Drawing on works such as Oklahoma!, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Schmigadoon!, Little Shop of Horrors, and Ride the Cyclone, the project examines how musical theatre constructs and reinforces social roles through performance. The …

Katie In-Between, Savannah Rae Sarabia May 2026

Katie In-Between, Savannah Rae Sarabia

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Katie In-Between is a contemporary young-adult fiction piece that follows the protagonist Katie as she learns about and reclaims her cultural identity. In her process, she learns the importance of embracing her identity, which refutes biases and ideals about who is and who is not part of her community. This story draws on personal experience navigating cultural identity and confronting histories and events that suppress that minority community's expression in American society. Through narration, poetry, and journal entries, readers are exposed to the confrontation of languages and histories to support ideas such as Gloria Anzaldúa's concept of nepantla, which refutes …

Daughters Of The Road, Kristen Marie Sche May 2026

Daughters Of The Road, Kristen Marie Sche

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The beloved Road Novel has long been a tale submerged in the coming-of-age story following men as they search for themselves along the American highways. The genre can vary from journeys of families seeking refuge or tackling a task to men seeking answers to something missing in their lives. However eclectic the genre, it lacks in the pilgrimage of girls finding what the road can bring to them in a literary fictional context. This thesis provides a novel written in the popular genre while exploring themes of sisterhood, grief, and inclusion through the context of a hybrid form of narration …

Centering Latinx Perspectives And Cultural Identification In Music Listening: Examining Musical Consumption Behaviors And Choices Among Latinx Adults, Javier Alejandro Silerio

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Music is a critical cultural activity and resource for people all over the world, often used for communication, recreation, identity formation, social bonding, and many other aspects of our daily lives. Moreover, this has been reported across many cultures and is not unique to a single group. Despite this, there is currently limited information and research around Latinx American music consumption and this population's overall relationship with music. Because of this, the purpose of this study is to examine music consumption behaviors among Latinx Americans, as well as possible relationships between their Latinx cultural identification and said music consumption behaviors. …

Asunto Familiar, Paolo Velazquez Angeles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Asunto Familiar is a project told through short stories. Set in the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez community, it tells the story of one family and their ever-changing lives after a death derails their entire trajectory. Informed by queer perseverance in the bilingual communities of the Chihuahuan Desert, Asunto Familiar aims at exploring the subtle ways family can inflict violence on each other, specifically on their queer members. This in turn, revealing the transitional power of queerness, allowing the characters to uphold love and move away from their predetermined societal roles.

The Voice As A Coordinated Bodily System: Embodied Learning, Anatomy, And Vocal Pedagogy, Ge Hope Tian Apr 2026

The Voice As A Coordinated Bodily System: Embodied Learning, Anatomy, And Vocal Pedagogy, Ge Hope Tian

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This reflective article examines the limitations of control-based approaches in traditional vocal training and proposes a shift toward understanding the voice as an integrated, coordinated bodily system. Drawing on personal experience, the author highlights how common instructional language - focused on outcomes such as resonance, support, and projection - often leads singers to apply excessive effort, resulting in tension, inefficiency, and vocal strain. By distinguishing between localized control and whole-body coordination, the reflection illustrates how sustainable vocal function emerges not through muscular manipulation but through balanced, dynamic organization of breath, posture, and sound. The author traces a transformative learning process …

Art As Resistance, Art As Hope: The Crane, The Nopal, And The Knowledge They Carry, Mayra Urbina Apr 2026

Art As Resistance, Art As Hope: The Crane, The Nopal, And The Knowledge They Carry, Mayra Urbina

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This reflection explores the crane-and-nopal motif in Talavera Poblana ceramics as a lens for understanding artisan knowledge, cultural identity, and the impacts of globalization on Indigenous communities. Through my own painting of a Talavera-style vase, I trace the layered colonial history embedded in this motif — including the quiet resistance of Indigenous artisans who encoded Aztec memory into colonial art forms by replacing the eagle with the crane. The reflection examines how globalization threatens artisan traditions through fast-fashion appropriation, the limitations of Mexico's 2022 cultural heritage protection law, and the displacement of Indigenous artisans in Mexico City. Ultimately, I argue …

The Secret Science Of Songs. Created By All Children Everywhere, Paul G. Morehouse Phd Apr 2026

The Secret Science Of Songs. Created By All Children Everywhere, Paul G. Morehouse Phd

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This field article introduces The Secret Science of Songs, a research-informed, practice-based framework that reconceptualizes songs as powerful, transdisciplinary tools in early childhood education. Drawing on over 40 years of classroom-based action research alongside established findings in cognitive science and music perception, the framework argues that young children’s engagement with songs is rooted not primarily in performance skill, but in their innate capacity to perceive and process auditory patterns in music and language. These pattern-based experiences constitute a rich aesthetic and cognitive domain through which children construct meaning, long before mastery of melody or verbal precision emerges.

The article …

Mita Y Mita: Bilingualism Beyond Identity Borders, Belén S. Yudess Apr 2026

Mita Y Mita: Bilingualism Beyond Identity Borders, Belén S. Yudess

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

“Mita Mita” asks audiences to reflect on the often discordant nature of identity development and how language, culture, and community impact this understanding. This piece is inspired by Gloria Anzaldua’s creation of the “mita y mita” framework in relation to border identity and politics theory as a way to conceptualize the doubling of identity that occurs between binaries. Through this lens, I attempt to dismantle the borders I have constructed around my identities by analyzing how reclaiming my name has begun to mend my sociocultural insecurities. As you engage with this material, I encourage you to let down your guard …

Chromatic Meditations, Jessica Csanky Apr 2026

Chromatic Meditations, Jessica Csanky

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

My reflection traces the development of In Harmony, a cross-cultural exhibition created in collaboration with Japanese artist Hisakazu Suzuki, emerging from a chance encounter and realized through a shared commitment to peace. Presented at the 4th Annual Peace Conference, the exhibition explores how artistic practice can transcend language and cultural boundaries to foster connection, hope, and collective vision during a time of global uncertainty. Centered on my series Chromatic Meditations, the work investigates the inner dimensions of peace through mindful, ritual-based painting practices shaped by pregnancy and the anticipation of new life. These emotionally resonant color-field landscapes invite …

Fractsynth: Exploring Glitch Timbres With Chaos Theory, Aidan Roach Apr 2026

Fractsynth: Exploring Glitch Timbres With Chaos Theory, Aidan Roach

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

In this paper, I explore how chaos theory can be used to design a new kind of synthesizer with the primary focus of producing glitchy, unpredictable sounds. Glitch music embraces abstract sound design, malfunctioning electronics, and randomness as the main compositional elements. However, most synthesizers rely on stable, repetitive oscillators that often sound too controlled. To challenge this, I developed FractSynth, a real-time synthesizer that uses chaotic attractors–including the Logistic Map, Henon Map, and Lorenz System–as modulation sources for frequency, amplitude, and tone. The software also features real-time Lyapunov Exponent Tracking, which gives users a direct visual of how …

From Vibration To Visualization: Building An Real-Time Audio Visualization System For Learning And Exploration Using Pyqt5, Aidan Roach Apr 2026

From Vibration To Visualization: Building An Real-Time Audio Visualization System For Learning And Exploration Using Pyqt5, Aidan Roach

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This paper presents the design, development, and analysis of my real-time audio visualization system created entirely in Python using PyQt5, called WaveCatcher. The system captures live audio input from a microphone and provides simultaneous visual feedback through multiple signal representations: including a time-domain waveform, a frequency-domain FFT spectrum, a scrolling spectrogram, harmonic peak visualization, dynamic range, amplitude envelope, spectral centroid, and spectral bandwidth. These features offer insight not just into the raw structure of sound, but into how humans perceive its qualities–like timbre! This terminology may seem intimidating—it certainly was when I first began learning it—but I’ll explain all of …

Interactions Of Dance And Mathematics: A Closer Look At Mathematical Sequences As Scores For Choreography From A Choreographic Lens, Caroline Wolfe Apr 2026

Interactions Of Dance And Mathematics: A Closer Look At Mathematical Sequences As Scores For Choreography From A Choreographic Lens, Caroline Wolfe

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This paper investigates the embodiment of infinite mathematical sequences through concert contemporary dance, examining how choreography can serve both as an artistic and analytical tool for exploring numerical patterns. Grounded in interdisciplinary literature on mathematical visualization in choreography, the study centers on two original choreographic works presented and performed at Missouri State University: Golden Ratio Sequence (Spring 2025), which maps the Fibonacci sequence and the natural applications of the Golden Ratio onto a spiral floor pattern, and Tetrahedral Numbers (Fall 2024), which employs an accumulation score to embody three-dimensional number growth through layered movement motifs and body created tetrahedra. The …

Decolonising Narratives Through Sonic Artistry And Weaving Dialogues: A Trans-Indigenous Exploration, Adam Manning, Sara Motta Apr 2026

Decolonising Narratives Through Sonic Artistry And Weaving Dialogues: A Trans-Indigenous Exploration, Adam Manning, Sara Motta

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

As a First Nations artist walking and working in collaboration with other Indigenous creatives, in this piece I explore in dialogue with my sister Sara, the reinterpretation of Beethoven's fifth symphony, seeking to address and alter the colonial narratives linked to a Beethoven sculpture accessed via a QR code. The Beethoven sculpture serves as a means for cultural reinterpretation and decolonisation through modification of Beethoven’s Fifth, Movement One. This exploration extends beyond aesthetic expression evolving into a creative, disruptive and potentially generative intervention. This sonic intervention-disruption questions established ideas and encourages a dialogue that surpasses temporal boundaries, offering a new-ancient …

Founding The Steam Journal: Creating Space For Arts, Science, And Life To Meet, Shamini Dias

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This interview spotlights Sara Kapadia, founder of the STEAM Journal, tracing the origins, evolution, and enduring vision of a publication designed to bridge the divide between art and science. Emerging from her dual experiences as an artist and education researcher, Sara created the journal to address a perceived gap between academic and creative communities: spaces that, while often siloed, engage parallel questions about the world. Grounded in her doctoral research on the shared curiosity of artists and scientists, the journal advances a transdisciplinary approach that invites contributors to move fluidly between visual, written, and scholarly forms. In conversation, Sara …

The Fool’S Errand: Art As Resistance. Art As Hope, Edwin Urbina

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This editorial offers a perspective on the role of laughter and the comedic arts through the trope of the Fool or Jester. Comedic arts not just speak truth to power through the ages; it also offers society hope, resilience, and resistance though counter narratives that make us laugh at "emperors without clothes".

The Case For Undergraduate Student Organizing, Nina Goldshmid Apr 2026

The Case For Undergraduate Student Organizing, Nina Goldshmid

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper is a reflection and timeline of my experience organizing a union and negotiating a contract as a student worker at Barnard College. I explored the power dynamics between student workers and college administrations, how to promote unity for progress, and why some undergraduate students are deciding to organize. I discussed the actions of the college that could stifle union organizing and negotiations, the obstacles involved in organizing, and the ways to build solidarity through awareness and coalition. I summarized the main takeaways from my experience and characterize the current student labor movement.
