Constructing Imperial Connectivity: State Infrastructure Projects And The Imperial Gaze In Bengal Presidency, 1849-1856, Richard William Bradley Gaspers Iii
Constructing Imperial Connectivity: State Infrastructure Projects And The Imperial Gaze In Bengal Presidency, 1849-1856, Richard William Bradley Gaspers Iii
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The construction of roads, canals, and supporting infrastructure in British India connected urban environs of power to interior peripheral spaces. The conclusion of the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849 saw the East India Company stand alone as the paramount power over the Indian subcontinent. A century of conquest gave way to a century of internal management. This shifted the state’s ‘gaze’ inward. Public infrastructure construction skyrocketed after 1849, transforming the role of the colonial state as it built roads, canals, bridges, courthouses, police stations, and jails on an unprecedented scale. This thesis will explore how these physical constructs bolstered connectivity, …
Expressions Of Taiwanese Cultural Identity In Piano Music: A Study Of Hsiao Tyzen’S Memories Of Home And Ma Shui-Long’S A Sketch Of The Rainy Harbor, Fang-Yu Hsu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study investigates how Taiwanese cultural identity is expressed in the piano works of composers Hsiao Tyzen and Ma Shui-Long, focusing on Hsiao’s Memories of Home and Ma’s A Sketch of the Rainy Harbor. While both composers are pivotal figures in Taiwan’s musical history, their approaches to integrating local heritage with Western compositional techniques differ significantly. This dissertation argues that they represent two distinct creative paths: Hsiao’s model of Romantic Nationalism and Ma’s model of Modernist Synthesis.
Through historical contextualization and detailed musical analysis, this research examines the specific methods each composer employed. The findings reveal that Hsiao directly quotes …
The Collision Between Chinese Traditional Culture And Western Musical Styles In Zhang Zhao’S Piano Work Pi–Huang, Weijing Li
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study focuses on Zhang Zhao’s solo piano work Pi–Huang and explores how Chinese traditional operatic culture is expressed through the piano as a Western instrument. As a piano work with a strong Chinese cultural background, Pi–Huang connects directly to the pihuang vocal system of Beijing opera and shows important elements of Chinese traditional music in its melody, rhythm, timbre, texture, and structure. This dissertation examines the historical and cultural background of pihuang, analyzes the musical language of the work, and discusses its interpretation in performance practice. It focuses especially on pentatonic materials, operatic melodic lines, rhythmic features, timbral images …

True Biz: A Fusion Of Written English And Printed Asl, Elysha O'Brien
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This paper analyzes the book True Biz by Sara Novic with particular attention given to the socio-cultural and historical aspects of the story as well as the postmodern construction of the novel. The narrative of a young girl transferring to a Deaf school and learning American Sign Language features numerous translanguaging characteristics. This essay pays close attention to story elements and how those elements highlight significant aspects of Deaf culture and Deaf history as well as how the postmodern construction of the novel enables a book to feature two differing language systems, namely written English and printed American Sign Language.
The Vocal Songs Of Ángela Peralta: A Performer's Guide, Ana Rangel Ortiz
The Vocal Songs Of Ángela Peralta: A Performer's Guide, Ana Rangel Ortiz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This document is a performer’s guide to the five vocal works of Ángela Peralta from her 1875 Álbum Musical. While she is known as an operatic soprano in Mexico, her work as a composer is slowly receiving more recognition. This project builds on that growing interest by bringing her songs back into conversation by bringing her songs into a performance-centered framework and demonstrating that they extend beyond the expectations of salon music. This document combines historical context, score editing, and performance analysis to support modern singers. The original published scores contain many inconsistencies, including issues with text underlay, spelling, and …
Negro Spirituals: The Long Journey West, Lavell Thompson, Jr.
Negro Spirituals: The Long Journey West, Lavell Thompson, Jr.
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This text seeks to explore the origins of Negro spirituals, and how they evolved, highlighting their arrival to Las Vegas, Nevada. It outlines the primacy of vocal music, particularly in reference to African American spirituals, and how they were shaped via the influence of African and European traditions. As it is impossible to address every type of spiritual created, the text focuses on a few types of spirituals—namely joyous accounts and spirituals that use codes for messages. Moreover, it seeks to create a comprehensive understanding of the origins of Las Vegas, because without acknowledging the contributions of the Mormon Church, …
Treatment And Recovery Of Mucoceles In Brass Musicians: The Performance Trap And Its Consequences, David D. Torres
Treatment And Recovery Of Mucoceles In Brass Musicians: The Performance Trap And Its Consequences, David D. Torres
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation examines the treatment and recovery of oral mucoceles in professional brass musicians through a qualitative case study combining personal narrative, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of medical and pedagogical literature. I interviewed four professional trumpet players who experienced mucoceles and lip trauma, and three medical professionals with relevant expertise. My own case serves as the primary study, documenting 15 years of scar tissue management following surgical excision and an immediate return to demanding performance. Medical literature treats mucocele excision as a routine procedure with recovery measured in weeks. Brass pedagogy literature assumes healthy lips and offers no guidance for …

Exploring A Boxing Community Exercise Porgram For Women With Parkinson's Disease, Emily Truong
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Objective: The purpose of this capstone project was to explore the lived experiences of 10 women with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who participate in the Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) program, an exercise community-based non-contact boxing program. Because women remain underrepresented in PD research and exercise-based interventions, this project aims to better understand how women perceive the physical, emotional, and social impacts of participating in RSB.
Methods: This qualitative case series included 10 women diagnosed with PD that participate in RSB at the Tony Cress Training Center. Data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews and audio recordings. Interviews were consented, transcribed verbatim, …

Modernidad, Heterogeneidad Y Utopía En Todas Las Sangres De José María Arguedas, Matthew J. Adams Jr
Modernidad, Heterogeneidad Y Utopía En Todas Las Sangres De José María Arguedas, Matthew J. Adams Jr
Spanish Honors Papers
This project analyzes José María Arguedas’s novel Todas las sangres (1964), focusing on the sociological and utopian dimensions that were explicitly questioned during the roundtable discussion on the novel held at the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos (IEP) on June 23, 1965. In that forum, participants offered pointed critiques of the plausibility of the social reality represented in Arguedas’s narrative. Moving beyond these objections, I argue that the literary reality Arguedas constructs—through what Antonio Cornejo-Polar has conceptualized as the “choral novel”—captures the enduring force of the colonial legacy and the historically and culturally heterogeneous condition of Peruvian society, dimensions that the …
Multi-Dimensional Scaling Of Web-Scraping Results From The A.A Zalizniak Grammatical Dictionary And The Russian National Corpus. Creating A Corpus Fragment Of All Possible Word-Forms Of Modified Russian Sound Verbs Using Web-Scraping Methodology. Compilation Of A Summary Table For The Participle Forms, Irina V. Ivliyeva, Perry Koob
Research Data
English Abstract:
This study investigates the development of multi-dimensional morphological profiles of Russian verbs of sounds, namely their participles, by integrating web-scraping methodologies and advanced digital visualization tools that is convenient and effective for a linguistic researcher.
The study demonstrates the potential of combining computational techniques such as web-scraping and digital visualization to enrich the understanding of complex, multi-source lexicographic phenomena. The main task at this stage of the research was to collect, compile (combine results), analyze and present a summary index of all participle forms of sound verbs, recorded in electronic versions of A.A. Zalizniak Grammatical Dictionary of the …
Acoustic To Electronic: Multidimensional Musical Explorations, Kanenar Wen
Acoustic To Electronic: Multidimensional Musical Explorations, Kanenar Wen
Student Theses
The music of the film was once thought to affect the emotions of the audience without their knowledge (Gorbman, 1987). But in some new partnerships on film projects from students, the lines between music, sound, and silence should be erased. Music could be more of a texture. The sound effects may also have the characteristics of the music. Silence could communicate information. In the usual definition of music, it highlights the phrases, timbre, and harmonic composition. When it is altered, the sound is not only “music,” but it is also in combination with the image, time, and narrative; it becomes …

Enhanced And Confused: The High Price Of Partnership In American Theater, Brandan Walsh
Enhanced And Confused: The High Price Of Partnership In American Theater, Brandan Walsh
Student Theses
Broadway’s contemporary development ecosystem relies on a complex and increasingly fragile relationship between nonprofit regional theaters, Equity workshop models in New York City, and a small number of fully commercial out-of-town tryouts. In recent decades, nonprofit regional theaters have become central to the commercial development process, hosting fully staged productions of Broadway-bound work under a banner of artistic partnership. These institutions provide infrastructure, audiences, labor, and institutional credibility, absorbing reputational risk in hopes of high rewards and financial gain from donors. In return, they receive limited financial participation in downstream commercial success and operate under strict ethical and legal constraints …
Realizing Reality — C.S. Lewis And The Hierarchical Model Of Christian Neo-Platonism, Jordan Spina
Realizing Reality — C.S. Lewis And The Hierarchical Model Of Christian Neo-Platonism, Jordan Spina
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Spina, Jordan, H. “Realizing Reality: C.S. Lewis and the Hierarchical Model of Christian Neo-Platonism.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2025. 253.
In recent years there has been a growing interest in C.S. Lewis’ intellectual relationship to the Medieval cosmological model. Scholars have demonstrated that, for Lewis, the Medieval cosmological model represented more than a scientific picture of earth in relation to other heavenly bodies. Its significance was not dependent upon the number of planets or the order in which they were positioned. Instead, it represented a philosophically robust view of reality
However, what has yet to be demonstrated is the roadmap …
Losing The Body: Tracing Corporeality As A Component Of The Imago Dei Through Early Christian Exegesis, Andrew Kneeland
Losing The Body: Tracing Corporeality As A Component Of The Imago Dei Through Early Christian Exegesis, Andrew Kneeland
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Kneeland, Andrew R. “Losing the Body: Tracing Corporeality as a Component of the Imago Dei Through Early Christian Exegesis.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2025. 252pp.
This dissertation examines the interpretation of imago Dei in Gen. 1:26 across early Christian history, revealing both a robust tradition of corporeal emphasis and a shift toward a spiritual consensus that was driven not by immediate, unanimous consensus but a variety of pastoral and polemical factors. Far from a fleeting, anthropomorphic error, a bodily understanding of the image of God spans diverse provenances and contexts. Organized diachronically and topically, the study begins with textual exegesis …
Tell Thy Story: The Jew As Other In "Pericles", Dov B. Rabinowitz
Tell Thy Story: The Jew As Other In "Pericles", Dov B. Rabinowitz
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This paper attempts to address a perceived blind spot in criticism of early modern literature, namely, the lack of critical race readings centering the othering of Jews in early modern drama. Shakespeare’s Pericles is used as an example of characters being othered, or Judaized, as they pass through city to city. Historical data, such as the history of the Domus Conversorum in England where converted Jews were kept, is used to bolster this argument, with Thaisa being read as othered in a Judaized way by being kept in a religious institution and never truly accepted by the people of Ephesus. …

Studies In The Reception Of The Council Of Trent In 16th-Century Lutheranism As Seen In The Eucharistic Theology Of Martin Chemnitz’S Examen Concilii Tridentini, Sebastian A. Grünbaum
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Grünbaum, Sebastian, A. Studies in the Reception of the Council of Trent in 16th-Century Lutheranism as Seen in the Eucharistic Theology of Martin Chemnitz’s Examen Concilii Tridentini. Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2025. “[338]” pp.
This dissertation focuses on the intra-Tridentine dialogue during the Council of Trent Session XIII (1551), which treated question related to the Lord’s Supper, and the Lutheran theologian Martin Chemnitz’s (1522–1586) examination of it.
The Council of Trent (1545–1563) largely defined the theological and administrative direction of the Roman Catholic Church for centuries. On the one side the Council tried to systematize, organize, and understand the church’s …
Project Wildest Dreams, Faith Bernier
Project Wildest Dreams, Faith Bernier
Honors College Theses
“Project Wildest Dreams” is a hybrid psychological correlational study and short fiction collection based on anecdotes of vivid, frightening, or bizarre dreams. This collaboration of art and science explores the nature of dreaming, a phenomenon that has intrigued and perplexed both the humanities and the STEM fields for many years. The goal of this thesis was twofold: primarily, it was intended to utilize the outlandish, surreal, and unique feelings and images that dreams elicit in order to procure an anthology of surrealist and absurdist short stories across primarily the genres of horror, comedy, and fantasy. In addition to this, the …

Each section includes cultural context, musical analysis, and suggestions for effective performance.
The Message Of Resilience And Harmony: From War Camps To Modern Calls For Peace, Linlin Uta
The Message Of Resilience And Harmony: From War Camps To Modern Calls For Peace, Linlin Uta
Dissertations, 2020-current
Music has a unique power to either foster harmony and peace or contribute to discord and suffering, depending on how it is used. The role of music in three different wartime camps—the Bando Prisoner-of-War Camp in Japan during World War I, Nazi concentration camps during World War II, and Japanese American internment camps during World War II—illustrates both the dangers and the transformative potential of music. While these examples highlight the misuse of music as a warning, they also reveal how music, when used in a positive way, can offer valuable lessons for promoting global peace.
Moreover, in an environment …
The High School Piccoloist: A Resource Guide, Rebecca Needham
The High School Piccoloist: A Resource Guide, Rebecca Needham
Dissertations, 2020-current
This project aims to curate a piccolo resource guide for high school music educators and their students. Currently, there are limited pedagogical materials available for beginning piccoloists or their music educators, and these materials are primarily scattered across decades of The Instrumentalist and the now-defunct Flute Talk journals. In addition, future band directors are rarely required to study auxiliary instruments like the piccolo in their collegiate coursework. These two factors combine to create a detrimental situation: frequently, neither teacher nor student in a typical high school setting has appropriate resources to understand the instrument and its essential differences from the …
Rhythmic Complexity And Harmonic Innovation: An Analysis Of Joan Tower’S Selected Post-2000 Piano Compositions, Yun Chen
Dissertations, 2020-current
Joan Tower’s post-2000 piano compositions show her unique approach to rhythmic complexity and harmonic innovation. While existing research focuses heavily on her earlier music, her recent piano pieces require further exploration from a performer’s perspective. This dissertation analyzes four specific works: Vast Antique Cubes (2000), Throbbing Stills (2000), Ivory and Ebony (2009), and Steps (2011). It explores how Tower’s compositional choices directly affect piano performance and the listener’s experience.
The first section explores Tower’s rhythmic language in “Steps” and “Throbbing Stills.” The analysis shows how Tower uses frequent meter changes, sudden rhythmic shifts, and strong contrast between motion and stillness. …

This research presents a new path in the development of Chinese music by aiming to incorporate both modern Western and ancient Chinese influences in form, texture, tonality, topic, and other dimensions of style and structure. Two Chinese composers whose recent compositions for the piano share similar characteristics: Zhao Zhang (b. 1964; Nature no. 2, 2013) and Xiaoxuan Xu (b. 1990; An Unusual Feast of East, 2022). The research will discuss how Zhao Zhang and Xiaoxuan Xu accomplish this fusion of old and new in their recent piano works Nature no. 2, (2013) and An Unusual Feast of East, 2022. …
Constructing A Contemporary Chinese Piano Language: An Analytical Study Of Zhang Zhao’S Chinese Dream, Ziwei Zhou
Constructing A Contemporary Chinese Piano Language: An Analytical Study Of Zhang Zhao’S Chinese Dream, Ziwei Zhou
Dissertations, 2020-current
The piano arrived in China in the early 1900s. Over the past century, Chinese piano music has moved from early imitation to the sophisticated and diverse styles we see today. For Chinese composers, the main challenge has always been how to balance Western techniques with Chinese traditions and their own unique voices. To address these challenges, Zhang Zhao (b.1964) stands out for his ability to turn traditional heritage into a modern piano language. After a summary of the history of Chinese piano literature, this study examines his Chinese Dream (2014) through his “Three Transformations” philosophy: (1) Western techniques for Chinese …
The Piano Music Of Orlando Fagnani And Its Connections To The Choro Tradition, Norman J. Charette
The Piano Music Of Orlando Fagnani And Its Connections To The Choro Tradition, Norman J. Charette
Dissertations, 2020-current
This study explores the life, piano works, and compositional style of Orlando Fagnani (1922–1977) as it fits into the choro tradition. By situating his compositions within their historical context, providing biographical insights, investigating stylistic features, and analyzing one of his piano works, Mini Prelúdio No. 1, this document highlights Fagnani’s contribution to Brazilian music and places him not only among significant composers of choro, but also among the leading Brazilian composers of the twentieth century. The fortunate timing of his birth in the same year as the Week of Modern Art contributed to a deeper connection with Brazil’s …
Examining The Experiences And Career Of A Highly Effective Orchestra Teacher: A Narrative History, Charlotte A. Hebert
Examining The Experiences And Career Of A Highly Effective Orchestra Teacher: A Narrative History, Charlotte A. Hebert
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Much of the available literature on the status of string education in the United States highlights the need for qualified string teachers. However, limited researchers have analyzed the reflections and perspective of retired string teachers. Retired string teachers have a unique ability to provide insight to preservice and current string teachers from a reflective lens. In this historical narrative study, I examined the 40-year career of orchestra director Laura Mulligan Thomas through her contributions and experiences. I utilized previous string education literature to define an effective string teacher. I employed semi-structured interviews, observations of a string techniques class that Thomas …
Weaving Eigengrau, Olivia Claire Luke
Weaving Eigengrau, Olivia Claire Luke
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Weaving Eigengrau explores weaving as both a material ritual and an inquiry about how reality is constructed and can be pulled apart. In this project, weaving becomes a method for redirecting forces into woven patterns and examining the relationship of contradiction by treating the contrasts between light and shadow, stillness and motion, and the fixed and the ephemeral as sculptural aspects. I’m driven by theories of reality: science, myth, and philosophy, and the common threads among them. Across systems of knowledge, reality is depicted in contradiction, and I seek to blur the lines between them. Within this convergence, weaving becomes …
