An Initial Formulation Of A Tactile-Based Art Creation Method From A Low-Vision Artist's Relief Painting Practice At Yayasan Teratai Bali, Ida Bagus Komang Sindu Putra, I Wayan Adnyana, I Wayan Karja, I Wayan Sujana Aug 2026

An Initial Formulation Of A Tactile-Based Art Creation Method From A Low-Vision Artist's Relief Painting Practice At Yayasan Teratai Bali, Ida Bagus Komang Sindu Putra, I Wayan Adnyana, I Wayan Karja, I Wayan Sujana

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This article examines the relief painting practice of one low-vision artist at Yayasan Teratai Bali as the basis for an initial formulation of a tactile-oriented visual art creation method. It addresses a methodological gap in inclusive art education and disability art studies, where blind and low-vision individuals are often discussed as learners, participants, or audiences, while their own procedures for making artworks receive less attention. Using an instrumental case study with a descriptive-interpretive orientation, data were collected through repeated observation, informal conversational interviews, artwork and process documentation, close observation of textural details, and contextual workshop documentation. Recurring actions and statements …

A Visual Analysis Of The Color Variety In Pekalongan Hand-Drawn Batik From 1910 To 2015, Christophera Ratnasari Lucius, Yanuar Ramadhan, Ahmad Fuad Aug 2026

A Visual Analysis Of The Color Variety In Pekalongan Hand-Drawn Batik From 1910 To 2015, Christophera Ratnasari Lucius, Yanuar Ramadhan, Ahmad Fuad

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

UNESCO has recognized Indonesian Batik's variety of designs and colors as an intangible cultural asset. Pekalongan batik, which is categorized as batik pesisir and is distinguished by its varied and expressive color combination, is one prominent example. Cultural acculturation influenced by China, Japan, India, and the Netherlands has created its visual identity. In order to create a culture-based color reference, this study will map the color variations of sixty hand-drawn Pekalongan batik pieces created between 1910 and 2015. Contemporary batik from current workshops and museum collections are among the research subjects. Digital photography was used for visual documentation, and Adobe …

Theatre Practice As A Restorative Medium For Collective Memory In The Collaborative Performance ``Install Ulang: Surawana Lewat Jalan Memutar'', Rifqi Haekal Amanullah, Wahyu Novianto

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This study examines the socio-cultural estrangement between members of the Canggu Village community and the reliefs and spatial environment of Surawana Temple. It explores how theatrical practice can serve as a performative medium for reactivating and reinterpreting collective memory associated with a historical site embedded in everyday life. Focusing on the collaborative performance Install Ulang: Surawana Lewat Jalan Memutar, the study employs artistic research with a practice-based approach, with the lead author acting as director and artistic facilitator. Data were collected through interviews, observation, literature review, workshops, artistic exploration, and post-performance reflection involving temple caretakers, farmers, archaeologists, and local …

Navigating The Edge Of Sentience Without A Scientific Meta-Consensus, Daniel West Aug 2026

Navigating The Edge Of Sentience Without A Scientific Meta-Consensus, Daniel West

Animal Sentience

In The Edge of Sentience (2024, 2025), Birch develops a precautionary framework for crafting public policies about potentially sentient systems. Underlying this framework is a commitment to the democratic principle that the public should authorize all significant moral judgments that arise during the policymaking process. In this commentary, I suggest that Birch’s framework fails to live up to this commitment by requiring scientists without public accountability to make consequential moral judgments. I suggest a friendly amendment to Birch’s framework by replacing the idea of a scientific meta-consensus with the method of formal expert elicitation, a well-tested method of gathering expert …

The Thousand Mysteries That Bind Us: The Multiverse As Spiritualverse And The Holism Of Mystery, Giovanni Rossini Aug 2026

The Thousand Mysteries That Bind Us: The Multiverse As Spiritualverse And The Holism Of Mystery, Giovanni Rossini

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

While we exist historically within evolving worldviews, we live amid the paradoxical necessity of mystery; one shared by scientists and non-scientists, theologians and atheists, and artists and philosophers alike. A thousand mysteries bind us with their imperative presence. While pre modern astronomers pondered the mysterious randomness of the night sky, today our sense of cosmological awe is fuelled not only by its randomness, but by a new scientific theory that says multiple skies inhabit the creation. The multiverse — a thesis emerging from cosmological science, wherein parallel worlds are posited to coexist — augments mystery. In this paper, I explore …

From Insect Cognition To Sentience: Exploring The Edge, Catherine Macri, Martin Giurfa Aug 2026

From Insect Cognition To Sentience: Exploring The Edge, Catherine Macri, Martin Giurfa

Animal Sentience

What does The Edge of Sentience tell us about insect sentience and consciousness? In this commentary, we reflect on Jonathan Birch’s framework for defining and scientifically investigating sentience in animals. We discuss the methodological challenges of studying subjective experience in evolutionary distant species, and consider trace conditioning, affective states, and neural architectures as potential windows into consciousness in insects. We argue that uncertainty, whether concerning definitions or methodology, should not prevent experimental investigation; rather it should motivate new approaches and experimental designs for exploring the diversity of conscious experience.

Ai, The Liberal Arts, And Indigenous Languages: Forming Code Into Language, Christina Graebner Aug 2026

Ai, The Liberal Arts, And Indigenous Languages: Forming Code Into Language, Christina Graebner

Summer Research Showcase

During the Summer, Spanish Professor Adam Coon and I worked on creating an annotated biography on AI and Indigenous languages for the Digital Well at the UMN Morris Library. Through this project, we have dived into conversations and research focusing on using AI as a translator. In recent years, the conversation around AI has created a surge of studies and research around the relationship between Indigenous languages and artificial intelligence. AI will only continue to expand, and it creates new ways to open communication but creates new ethical guidelines needed to be followed. Our project gathers research articles, podcasts, and …

The Wunsch's Of Morris: Empowerment In Time, Landon Shaw

Summer Research Showcase

When diving into history it is easy to find yourself lost in the text. This summer I got to actively sift through history bringing it to life searching to find the real depths that were waiting to be rediscovered. By working with Emily Bruce on studying the Wunsch family that lived in Morris I got to find out about the daughters of the family. In this study I find their lives and bring them into context as we look back at the difficulty of landholding as a woman and how these Wunsch sisters challenged and concurred with the demands of …

Tradition And Representation In The Work Of Contemporary Native American Art, Florence Romero Aug 2026

Tradition And Representation In The Work Of Contemporary Native American Art, Florence Romero

Summer Research Showcase

This presentation investigates the origins of contemporary Native American art in the mid-to late twentieth century to gain a deeper understanding of the broader contours of the field of contemporary art by Native Americans, to understand some of the key issues that these artists are interested in, and research the work of select contemporary Indigenous artists. Using comparative analysis of six case studies of contemporary Indigenous artists, this presentation will examine how these artists deal with themes of tradition and modernity and respond to how Native Americans have been misrepresented in the past and how these representations have impacted them …
