A Marriage By Any Other Sign: Social Signification In The Way Of The World, Alyssa Alexander
A Marriage By Any Other Sign: Social Signification In The Way Of The World, Alyssa Alexander
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This paper analyzes William Congreve’s The Way of the World through the lens of Derrida’s theory of différance, arguing that the play destabilizes the fixed social categories of marriage and identity through linguistic performance. While many critics read Congreve’s portrayal of marriage as either reinforcing or satirizing Restoration social structures, this analysis emphasizes how language itself resists fixed meaning. Drawing on key scenes between Mirabell and Millamant, Waitwell’s reflections on autonomy, and Fainall’s contradictory claims of masculine selfhood, the paper demonstrates how the signs “husband,” “wife,” and “man” shift and defer meaning rather than affirm static roles. Characters do not …
Murder On Music Row: A Narrative Analysis Of Mass-Mediated Country Music And Independent Texas Red Dirt Music, Jennifer A. Worley
Murder On Music Row: A Narrative Analysis Of Mass-Mediated Country Music And Independent Texas Red Dirt Music, Jennifer A. Worley
Communication Theses
This project employs Roland Barthes' narrative codes as a framework for textual analysis to examine the underlying structures and meanings within song lyrics from two contrasting traditions of country music: mass-mediated Nashville country and Texas Red Dirt. With a sample spanning a five-year period, the study explores how narrative forms reflect broader socio-cultural dynamics and economic forces. Drawing upon the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, particularly the works of Theodor Adorno and Karl Marx, the project concentrates on the commodification of cultural products and implications for authenticity and truth in cultural expression. Through a comparative analysis, the research reveals …

Con Fe Te Vere Otra Vez, Edwin Perez-Hernandez
Student Projects
"Con Fe the vere otra vez" is a photographic series that documents the struggles associated with immigration. How it causes a divide in the familial construct as one member separates themself to build a better opportunity while sacrificing the opportunity to live a life with the family they were raised with. This work focuses on showing how though separated they still find ways to connect with each other. This series also serves as a way to connect and comfort immigrants and individuals whose family immigrated and remind them they are not alone. In a political climate where Mexican and Mexican-Americans …

Sports For Gender Equality, Michelle Salmeron, Julia Mott, Eliza Cash
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Recent studies show that participating in sports leads to lower levels of anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity in children while also fostering higher self-esteem (Tahira, 2023). In Mexico, 67% of girls are inactive (Provoking Sport, 2023). However, there has been little direct research conducted in Mexico to illustrate and exemplify the benefits of sports for girls and women. Additionally, there are few role models for them to look up to who share their cultural background, as most examples come from other countries. This creates a cycle that hinders cultural and societal growth, as well as creates a barrier to sports participation. …
“Something To Be Involved In”: Fostering Intra-Campus Community Through Zine- Making And The Potentials Of A Zine Library At Binghamton University, Autumn Jacobs
Library Research Scholars Program Spring 2025
Zines encompass a wide variety of works broadly defined as self-published print works that are not made with profit in mind. They have long fostered community networks for marginalized groups and fringe interests. In recent years, they have increasingly been used in academic contexts, through class assignments, student organizations, and library programming. While there have been a number of zinemaking initiatives at Binghamton University, there has been little institutional support for this work and it has been incredibly fragmented. This project aims to bridge the gaps between zinemakers and administrative support through the creation of a campus zine library. During …

Nlp Analysis Of The Septuagint: Topic Modeling And Sentiment Analysis Of Biblical Domestic Terms, Anne-Duncan Enright
Nlp Analysis Of The Septuagint: Topic Modeling And Sentiment Analysis Of Biblical Domestic Terms, Anne-Duncan Enright
IPHS 484: Senior Seminar
This study conducts an exploratory data analysis (EDA) of topic modeling and sentiment analysis applied to the Septuagint (LXX – the Greek translations of the Old Testament and the New Testament in the original Koine Greek) as well as four English translations of the Bible (LSV, Darby, DR, and KJV). Utilizing Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) for topic modeling, I compare the Vulgate-based translations to Septuagint-based translations, discovering marked differences between the two categories of translations. The Vulgate is the Latin translation of the Bible done by Jerome in 900 A. D. which is already one step away from the original …
Scraping Sermonsusing Natural Language Processing To Compare Protestant Churches, Annalia Fiore
Scraping Sermonsusing Natural Language Processing To Compare Protestant Churches, Annalia Fiore
IPHS 484: Senior Seminar
This project compares sermons from three Christian traditions: Evangelical, Charismatic, and Reformed. Using data scraped from church youtube channels based in the Columbus, Ohio area, I ran thousands of sermons through Topic Modeling to evaluate the differing emphases of each tradition. Many of the topics corresponded with what we might expect from their respective tradition. But others were surprising. Most significantly, there was a strong emphasis within the Charismatic tradition on tithing and finances, concerns with resisting sexual temptation among the Evangelicals, and a focus on ecclesiology within the Reformed tradition. This project also indicates that further topic modeling on …
The Role Of Organizational Culture And Pastoral Leadership In Sustainable Church Outreach: A Multisite Mini-Ethnographic Case Study, Althea P. Gordon-Scott
The Role Of Organizational Culture And Pastoral Leadership In Sustainable Church Outreach: A Multisite Mini-Ethnographic Case Study, Althea P. Gordon-Scott
PhD in Organizational Leadership
This study examined the role of organizational culture and pastoral leadership in sustainable church outreach programs. Two churches were chosen for this multisite mini-ethnographic case study because, for multiple years, they have participated in multiple outreaches each week to their non-Christian neighbors. These two churches differed in terms of geographical location, size, demographics, and budget. Data collection included field observations, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and document analysis. The themes that surfaced from the data were altruistic foundations, relational equity, organizational agility, organizational challenges, exemplary pastoral leadership, and the centrality of God. This research contributes to the theoretical and practical understanding …

Development And Evaluation Of The Da Vinci Ai Tutor: Enhancing Accessibility And Personalized Learning In Art History Education, James Hutson, Tiffani Barner
Faculty Scholarship
This study examines the implementation of the Da Vinci AI Tutor, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI)-based tutoring platform designed specifically for enhancing personalized and accessible learning in art history within higher education. Launched in Fall 2024 at a private liberal arts institution in the Midwest, the system integrates a conversational AI avatar modeled after Leonardo da Vinci, incorporating immersive virtual reality environments and multimodal interaction capabilities to engage students across undergraduate survey courses, advanced Renaissance classes, and graduate comprehensive exam preparations. Addressing significant gaps in existing humanities education research, the current study explores two primary research questions: (i) How AI-driven …

Ecuador: Development, Politics, and Languages

Chile: Cultural Identity, Social Justice, and Community Development
Chile is home to the largest Palestinian diaspora community outside of the Arab world. This cultural presence is heavily reflected in Chile’s visual culture, particularly through politically charged street art. This paper contextualizes the history of the Palestinian diaspora in Chile as well as evolution of muralism as a political tool in the country to analyze how Santiago’s contemporary street art expresses solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for territory and self-determination. While pro-Palestinian art is gaining recognition in the Chilean academic sphere through gallery and institutional spaces, street art remains significantly underrepresented. Due to its physical vulnerability as an impermanent …

Mobile Hyflex In Product Design Studios, Ceri Almrott
Case studies: Digital Education
Studio 201: Design Process is a year 2 design studio module which looks to teach students the iterative design process and is typically structured around active learning and problem-solving in physical studio spaces. Historically the primary learning occurred during a 4hour studio session with an additional 2-hour supervision session occurring later in the week. For the 2024-2025 academic year this model was flipped with active studio activities taking the whole of the early week, 4-hour session and the more theoretical and knowledge transfer activities occurring in the shorter session via Hyflex delivery. The goal of this session was to take …
