Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
The country, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Virginia Community College System initiatives all promote generative AI within education. It is a topic of great concern and interest for higher education instructors, yet at the same time many faculty members feel uncertain about effectively integrating it into class material. To further add pressure to the AI explosion, community colleges particularly face a responsibility to prepare their students for success in this new AI-focused environment. In this article, seven faculty members from Camp Community College discuss the implications of generative AI programs, including subscriptions and chatbots, within their particular courses and how …

Brain Fog: An Adventure: Part One, Amalia Mihalakakos
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
My book was developed through research on creating believable characters and how to write effectively for elementary schoolers. The goal of this project was to have a book that, when finished being written, any child could pick up and find peace. I hoped that every reader would learn something new about a culture they are unfamiliar with or about themselves. For children, developing empathy and a deeper understanding of others can have a lasting impact. Not only does empathy and understanding provide a foundation for other skills, but it can also begin to evolve and grow over time. Brain Fog: …

How To Industry Plant Yourself, Ted Childish
How To Industry Plant Yourself, Ted Childish
Digital Laboratory: Publisher of Internet Journal
Ted Childish is an artist, creative mind, and cultural organizer working at the intersection of digital culture and contemporary creative economies. His practice spans from conceptual ideation to visual production and designed objects, all approached with a distinct material sensibility. How to Industry Plant Yourself is an analysis of the contemporary creative landscape, delivered in the format of a 'how-to' presentation — a familiar trope of the social media era. This work employs graphic design strategies akin to a pitch deck, symbolizing the increasingly transactional and performative environments in which creatives navigate their careers today.

The Role Of The Church In The German Democratic Republic: Examining The Representation Of Christianity In The Novel Einer Trage Des Anderen Last Within Its Cultural And Historical Context, Arden Remnant Gewirtz Levine
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The attitude towards the Protestant Church in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) changed overtime and was not homogenous during the approximately forty years of the GDR’s existence. This thesis will use this established cultural and historical context in order to analyze the representation of Christianity in the novel Einer trage des anderen Last, written by Wolfgang Held. The premise of the novel is two men diagnosed with tuberculosis are forced to share a room in the Sanatorium, however, one is a protestant pastor and the other is a member of the Volkspolizei (the People’s police). Through their distinct ideologies …

The Grand Narratives: The Rise And Fall Of Universal Philosophical Systems, Gavin S. Litchford
The Grand Narratives: The Rise And Fall Of Universal Philosophical Systems, Gavin S. Litchford
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis reviews the development of narrative and systematic methods of argumentative legitimation in the Western tradition of philosophy from its conception until the present day. Utilizing both primary sources from central figures in key movements within this development process and supplementary secondary sources, this analysis notes which systems were used as appeals to higher authority and the trends in the adoption and transformation of new models. It is demonstrated that the Enlightenment era punctuated a progression begun in the premodern era from simple, cultural narratives to individualized, subjective, and self-perpetuating Grand Narrative systems, and that it generated the preconditions …

轉型中國、生態政治與內亞書寫 : 張承志文學和思想研究, Huaji Xu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Woman-To-Woman Marriage In West Africa: A Vanishing Tradition Of Power And Agency, Bright Alozie
Woman-To-Woman Marriage In West Africa: A Vanishing Tradition Of Power And Agency, Bright Alozie
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
In lieu of an abstract, here is an excerpt: Marriage in west Africa has played a central role in shaping aspects of society, and has evolved over time. While traditional heterosexual unions dominate discussions, a lesser-known but significant practice – woman-to-woman marriage – has existed for centuries. In my research, I examined this institution, which allows a woman to assume the role of a husband by marrying another woman. There’s evidence of woman-to-woman marriage in more than 40 societies across west Africa, including the Igbo of Nigeria, the Frafra of Ghana and the Dahomeans of present-day Benin.
What’S Behind A Number? An Analysis Of Maternal Healthcare In Cuba And The Impact Of Policy On Women’S Autonomy, Brynn Urban '25
What’S Behind A Number? An Analysis Of Maternal Healthcare In Cuba And The Impact Of Policy On Women’S Autonomy, Brynn Urban '25
Honor Scholar Theses
The primary aim of this research is to contrast personal testimonies from birthing women in Cuba with the frequently boasted Cuban health statistics in order to illuminate important discrepancies existing between what is reported by the state versus the reality of individual experiences. Investigation into women’s personal testimonies of mistreatment within maternity homes and hospitals in Cuba will reveal significant disparities that exist within the socialist healthcare system that have otherwise gone unconsidered. In order to contextualize these lived experiences as products of problematic post-revolutionary ideologies, the political, economic, and social stakeholders in the Cuban healthcare system will be outlined. …
Genocide Education: What Is It, And Why Is It Important?, Allison Weiner '25
Genocide Education: What Is It, And Why Is It Important?, Allison Weiner '25
Honor Scholar Theses
This paper explores the critical importance of implementing genocide education in public school curricula across the United States. It argues that while Holocaust education has seen gradual inclusion in educational mandates, broader genocide education remains insufficient and inconsistently applied. Drawing from historical developments, legislative trends, and pedagogical strategies, the study emphasizes how comprehensive genocide education fosters civic awareness, combats ignorance, and equips students with tools to recognize and resist systemic discrimination and mass atrocities. The author highlights the urgency of this educational reform through personal narrative, legislative analysis, and advocacy frameworks, proposing a model that integrates historical case studies, survivor …

Ethics Of End-Of-Life Care: Alzheimer's And Assisted Dying, Callan Plant '25
Ethics Of End-Of-Life Care: Alzheimer's And Assisted Dying, Callan Plant '25
Honor Scholar Theses
Assisted dying and euthanasia are hotly contested end-of-life care options that present pressing dilemmas concerning patient autonomy, relief of suffering, and the misapplication of these delicate medical procedures. Access to and prohibition of these options is predicated on years of legal history, including continuous adjustment, and is actively contested in many places. Each country where at least one of these options is accessible, such as the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands, possesses largely similar restrictions and guidelines, with notable exceptions. Through the examination of data in countries that allow access to assisted dying, euthanasia, or both, it is possible …
Democracy In Discourse: Presidential Addresses And The Public's Understanding Of Governance In The 21st Century, Knole Ihle '25
Democracy In Discourse: Presidential Addresses And The Public's Understanding Of Governance In The 21st Century, Knole Ihle '25
Honor Scholar Theses
This thesis explores how presidential crisis rhetoric shapes public understanding of democracy in the twenty-first century. Through a comparative analysis of George W. Bush’s address following the September 11 attacks and Donald Trump’s speech at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it examines how presidents construct national identity, justify political action, and frame civic participation. Drawing from classical rhetorical theory, Bitzer’s rhetorical situation, Burke’s dramatistic pentad, and McGee’s theory of “the people,” the study argues that crisis rhetoric is not simply a reaction to events but a means of redefining the crisis. It also considers demagogic rhetorical strategies—such as emotional …

Loz, A Feature-Length Screenplay By Audrey Ickes & The Midwest’S Playground: An Autoethnography Of “The Lake” In Accompaniment To The Screenplay Loz, Audrey M. Ickes '25
Honor Scholar Theses
The following screenplay and critical paper mold together into one comprehensive project. The historical context found in the critical paper informs the screenplay as much as the screenplay weaves its way into the critical paper’s autoethnography. For example, the unique section breaks throughout the critical paper were taken directly from my grandfather's letterheads that he used for his seasonal business letters.
Queering The Mean Girl: Spectating The Post-Feminist Melodrama, Anne Gregg '25
Queering The Mean Girl: Spectating The Post-Feminist Melodrama, Anne Gregg '25
Honor Scholar Theses
Ultimately this thesis will examine how Mean Girls melodramas moralize gender and sexuality. The Mean Girl is not an embodiment of moral hegemony. She may look like the perfect subject, but she is imperfect, because she tries to be perfect. She is a failure of femininity, because her attempts to be feminine reveal the masquerade. Womaniliness is not inherent; it is not real. The Mean Girl is attractive to the sapphic spectator because she exposes the alienation and artifice of gender and heterosexuality. The stereotypical image of the Mean Girl is plastic perfection, but she is not.
Tiny Creatures, Big Lessons: Using Music Education And Ecoliteracy To Impact Young Learners' Perspectives On Bugs And Nature, Paige Burgess '25
Tiny Creatures, Big Lessons: Using Music Education And Ecoliteracy To Impact Young Learners' Perspectives On Bugs And Nature, Paige Burgess '25
Honor Scholar Theses
This thesis aims to demonstrate that relationships between students and nature can be improved through teaching young learners about music and bugs together, potentially leading to a greater overall love for and willingness to protect nature. The thesis features original teacher action research conducted over multiple weeks in a first grade classroom, with observations and data to support the efficacy of the methods discussed. This thesis analyzes literature that supports how increasing empathy toward bugs at a young age can have tangible benefits for the environment, how ecoliteracy as a framework is an effective means of teaching about nature, and …
How It Will End: Physical And Philosophical Implications Of The Fate Of Our Universe, Alex Bittle '26
How It Will End: Physical And Philosophical Implications Of The Fate Of Our Universe, Alex Bittle '26
Honor Scholar Theses
What does physics have to say about the end of our universe? And what does it mean for us, if anything? Answering these questions requires an understanding of the so-called "lambda-cold dark matter" (ΛCDM) model of cosmology, which models the universe as containing an expanding pressure, Λ or dark energy, in a battle with the gravitational attraction provided by dark and regular matter. First, the physics (including observations and theory) of the ΛCDM, including the Big Bang and CMB, the inflationary period, and equations that govern the way the size of the universe changes with respect to time for different …
