“En Clave” Tania León And Roberto Sierra: Autochthonous Music Of Cuba And Puerto Rico, Contemporary Music Composition And The ‘Puente’ In Between, Omar A. Ramirez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This document is in two parts. The first examines selected works of Latin-American composers Tania León and Roberto Sierra. Both composers cite their cultural background as a force that shapes their artistic expression. Many of their works are titled in Spanish, with compositions referencing their homelands in subject and narrative, and incorporate the autochthonous music(s) of Cuba and Puerto Rico. Elements of these afrodiasporic musical traditions can be found in their works: Alegre, Batá, Stride, (León), Loiza, and Concerto for Viola (Sierra), each examined here.
Autochthonous musical elements are highlighted in score excerpts and described using …

The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Journaling On Psychological Well-Being, Jonah Guthrie
Honors Projects
This study investigated the effects of mindfulness-based journaling compared to free-form journaling on perceived stress, emotion regulation, and mindfulness in undergraduate students. Participants (N = 43) were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness-based journaling group or a free-form journaling group. Both groups journaled daily for two weeks and completed pre- and post-intervention assessments using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ).
A series of 2 × 2 mixed-design repeated measures ANOVAs revealed a significant main effect of time for perceived stress, F(1, 7) = 28.38, p = .003, …
Deaf-Centric Expression Of Biblical Language And Themes, Grace M. Tang
Deaf-Centric Expression Of Biblical Language And Themes, Grace M. Tang
Senior Honors Theses
Christianity contains complicated language and concepts that many individuals can struggle to express in American Sign Language (ASL) in ways that resonate with the Deaf community. Accessibility for the Deaf extends far beyond the translation of words into signs, requiring recontextualization to fit a Deaf lens and adaptation of communication methods to match the oral tradition and Deaf culture. This qualitative study evaluates how the hearing-centered language and themes of the Bible can be effectively portrayed to Deaf audiences through comprehensive interviews with three Deaf Christian pastors and three hearing Christian interpreters. This research found that Deaf churches allow for …

Asunder: A Variety Show By Ash Lehning, Ashley Lehning
Honors Capstones
For my honors capstone project, I performed a variety show. Through the performance, I wanted to showcase who I am as a performer and as a person. For many years, I have been passionate about dancing, singing, writing poetry, and playing music. I also really enjoy joking around and having fun. So, instead of trying to decide on just one or a few of these skills to showcase, I combined all of these into a variety show with 26 different acts (one for each letter of the alphabet). This project challenged my creativity in that I had to come up …

Music ETDs
To fulfill the requirements of the UNM Master Theory-Composition Program, this thesis portfolio includes the following pieces:
Eco IV, for oboe, Bb clarinet, alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon. This piece explores my concept of meta-instrument, which combines two or more
instruments to create a new one. In Eco IV I explored proportional notation, impulses, attacks, elision in gestures, pitch order, transitions, and noise. The piece was
performed by Splinter Reeds at the 2023 John Donald Robb Composer´s Symposium. With this work, I fulfill the requirement of a work using orchestra, chamber
orchestra, or wind ensemble.
Quotations, for flute, alto …

The Write Voice: Using Professional Writing To Preserve Cultural Heritage, Anna Fox
Public History Symposium
The goal of this capstone was to become familiar with the different voices that public history professionals take on in order to successfully preserve their collections and advocate for community histories. To gain experience with the internally focused informative voice, an orientation manual was written and digitized for the Sinclair College Archives, a local Dayton archive in which student workers, interns, and future archives professionals are frequently trained on the basics of archival processing and arranging materials for public use. For that same institution, a grant opportunity was selected, and a narrative application was written to gain experience using an …

“Gut Heil”: Dayton Turner’S Preservation During The First World War, Brandon Broering
Public History Symposium
Good greetings, or Gut Heil!, was a common greeting made by German-Americans in Dayton. These German-Americans and the lives of millions of Americans on April the sixth, 1917 were forever altered because of the United States’ decision to join the war effort. As the United States entered the First World War, domestically the population felt emboldened to aid in the war effort in every way possible. The First World War brought unprecedented hysteria towards German-Americans for fear of treason and espionage upon the war effort. Eventually even legislation was passed 1 to halt anyone in the United States from interfering …

Fiction MFA Theses
Inspired by Southern Gothic fiction and speculative short fiction, the stories in "The Things We Lose and Other Haunted Stories" explore the realms of otherness, loss, and family relationships. Though not always supernatural, each story contains a ghostly element which haunts the characters, pushing them out of their comfort zones so they may confront and grow from the fears and phenomena which threaten to break them.
