The Hitching Post: American Poetry And Chinese Mythology, Xiamara Elena Hohman
The Hitching Post: American Poetry And Chinese Mythology, Xiamara Elena Hohman
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I examine the ways in which Chinese mythology has figured in American poetry, focusing particularly on the ways Chinese mythologies have served—and continue to serve—as “hitching posts,” quasi-material sites from which meaning can be created and explored. As I am defining it, a myth is a narrative that gives meaning to a lived experience. It explains what we commemorate and worship and renders meaningful both celebration and life. In the first three chapters of this study, I discuss the ways in which Chinese myths and cultural practices have been both used as hitching posts and appropriated by …
Sacred Bodies And (A)Historical Testimony: Han Kang's Human Acts, Jenny Yoojin Oh
Sacred Bodies And (A)Historical Testimony: Han Kang's Human Acts, Jenny Yoojin Oh
Comparative Literature Undergraduate Senior Theses
The 1980 Gwangju Uprising is a significant event in contemporary South Korean political history. In the decades following, "Gwangju literature" has provided an avenue for representation, narrativization, and encounter with the event. South Korean author Han Kang is another writer of the Uprising, and her 2014 novel Human Acts returns to the site of injury in order to open up the event to the larger histories of sovereignty, civil conflict, and war that it localizes in Gwangju, 1980.
This thesis seeks to leverage the way the novel draws upon the sacred and the religious to call upon Gwangju. I argue …
"The Divine Light Illuminates The Intellect:" The Role Of Divine Illumination In The Theology Of Meister Eckhart, John Marshall Loving
"The Divine Light Illuminates The Intellect:" The Role Of Divine Illumination In The Theology Of Meister Eckhart, John Marshall Loving
Dissertations
This dissertation is a study on the epistemological theory of divine illumination in the works of Meister Eckhart (c. 1260 - 1329 CE). Illumination, first asserted by St. Augustine, is the theory that the human intellect is incapable of achieving epistemic certainty regarding what it sensorily receives. To gain this certainty, the mind is reliant upon illumination, wherein the sensed object is known by the mind through the light of that object's divine idea, which also serves as its ontological principle. Divine illumination was the dominant epistemology in Christian thought for centuries until it began to lose its influence in …
Second Language Learning Among Pre-Primary School Children: A Bibliometric Analysis Of Global Research Trends, Fabiola Hassan, Reuben Sungwa
Second Language Learning Among Pre-Primary School Children: A Bibliometric Analysis Of Global Research Trends, Fabiola Hassan, Reuben Sungwa
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This bibliometric study investigates global research trends on phonological awareness in second language learning (SLL) among pre-primary school children from 2014 to 2023. The study utilizes data from the Dimensions database, and is guided by three objectives: analysing publication volume trends, identifying leading contributors (countries, institutions, authors, journals), and mapping dominant research themes. It employs the VOSviewer—a software tool for constructing and visualizing bibliometric networks—to conduct co-authorship, co-citation, and keyword co-occurrence analyses. The results show a steady increase in research output, peaking in 2021, reflecting a growing scholarly interest. The United States and United Kingdom dominated research contributions, with institutions—like …

The Intonation Of Questions In The Cinyambwa Dialect Of Cigogo Language, Maulid Kiruya, Devet Goodness
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper examines the intonation systems of content and yes-no questions in Cinyambwa, a dialect of Cigogo Bantu language (G.11 in Guthrie’s classification). The study investigates the intonation patterns of different questions to show how content questions are differentiated from yes-no questions prosodically. The study was conducted in Makutopora village, Manyoni district, Singida region, Tanzania. Data were obtained from a sample of four (4) Cinyambwa speakers who were purposely selected. Elicitation was used as a data collection method with the aid of a sentence list, interviews, and picture-based tasks as data collection instruments. The study was guided by the autosegmental-metrical …
A Linguistic Analysis Of Humour In Selected Tanzanian Stand-Up Comedy Shows: A Script-Based Semantic Approach, Okoa Simile
A Linguistic Analysis Of Humour In Selected Tanzanian Stand-Up Comedy Shows: A Script-Based Semantic Approach, Okoa Simile
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study analyses humour as a culturally situated linguistic practice by examining how humour is constructed in selected Tanzanian stand-up comedy shows. Specifically, it sought to analyse the linguistic devices comedians use to evoke humour. The study is guided by Victor Raskin’s script-based semantic theory of humour (SSTH). The theory posits that humour arises from the opposition of two conflicting scripts within a linguistic structure. The qualitative research approach was used to guide the study processes. The study analysed nine (9) performances by famous Tanzanian comedians Mr. Eliud Samwel, Mr. Abdalla Musa Njalamoto (TX Dulla), Mr. Silvester Mujuni (Mpoki), and …

Modernism’S Mythic Mothers: Queering Motherhood Through Classical Matrilineage, Samantha Marie Lepak
Modernism’S Mythic Mothers: Queering Motherhood Through Classical Matrilineage, Samantha Marie Lepak
Dissertations
I position this dissertation at the intersection of modern/contemporary literature, queer/feminist theory, and ancient Greek classics in the hopes of better understanding the spaces in which they meet, engaging with writers from the late modernist era to the present in order to highlight the connections between theories, themes, and practices of queerness from the modernists forward. Using the work of H.D. and writers following in her footsteps, I argue that exploring adaptations of Greek classics written primarily by female and gender-variant authors from the modernist era forward illuminates the extent to which the classics enables writers to “think queerly,” considering …
Returning To Simplicity In Early Daoist And Ancient Greek Thought, Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Alfailakawi
Returning To Simplicity In Early Daoist And Ancient Greek Thought, Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Alfailakawi
Master's Theses
Underlying both the voluntary simplicity and minimalist lifestyle movements is the sentiment that living a simple life leads to tranquility. Despite purported instances where tranquility is experienced through simple living (Hitz, 2020), one can identify instances where, despite living simply, one does not experience tranquility. If living simply is not sufficient for tranquility, what is? In this project I argue that “simplicity” is the inner condition necessary and sufficient to experiencing tranquility. While some argue that simplicity is a practical virtue (Compte-Sponville, 2001; Gambrel and Cafaro, 2010; and Martin, 2012), I argue that simplicity, what is linguistically defined as the …

Joker Forum Theatre As A Classroom Teacher: Qualitative Research Data., Nadarajan Thambu
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
The task of maintaining the focus and interest of students on the teaching and learning process in the classroom is still a challenge for teachers of Moral Education subject. Students who do not pay attention, cannot understand moral values, accept and show commitment to them. The failure of students to focus will also fail the effort to produce moral human beings. Meanwhile, the role of theater in the field of education is also undeniable. Therefore, a form of community theater named Forum Theatre has been used as a pedagogy of teaching Moral Education among preservice teachers. In the context of …

The Very Fine Line: Utilitarian Aesthetics And Threshold Politics In Now You See Me Moria, Nik Rye
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
Now You See Me Moria (est. August 2020) is an international socially engaged art collective that brings visibility to the inhumane conditions of the Moria refugee camp, aiming to influence European Union migration policies. This paper examines the collective’s work across digital and physical gallery spaces, analyzing the role of utilitarian aesthetics in both image and process, and situating the project alongside the migratory journey of a specific member. The resonance of this initiative, and the actions it has catalyzed, reveals a societal push to disrupt the contemporary art mainstream in favor of an emergent movement that privileges lived experience …

This Is Theatre: Deconstructed Repetition And Theatre-In-Education During Covid-19, Subbah Mir
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
This project report is a practical application of deconstructed repetition model, I devised by merging Augusto Boal and Baz Kershaw, in an undergraduate Composition Writing class in Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, U.S. As the facilitator Deconstructed repetition means cost-effective repetition of personal and local stories for introspection in order to engage the community members, address the oppression, and celebrate the local culture. The four stipulations of the models are: avoiding the Western canon (or hegemonic voice), making the audience(s) see direct and indirect oppression, circumventing commodification while maintaining audience interest, and celebrating local culture instead of downright criticizing it. …

Isto É Teatro: Repetição Desconstruída E Teatro Na Educação Durante A Covid-19, Subbah Mir
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
