This study examines the life and legacy of Sarah Landrum Devereux Garrison (1827–1900) and her management of Monte Verdi Plantation in Rusk County, Texas, tracing its transformation before, during, and after the American Civil War. Drawing from the Devereux Family Papers at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, along with county records, agricultural schedules, and personal correspondence, this research reconstructs the economic, social, and domestic systems that sustained plantation life under her direction. As a widow and female plantation manager, Sarah navigated the profound upheavals of war, emancipation, and Reconstruction with exceptional resilience and adaptability. Her leadership offers an …

Sight-reading in middle school chorus classes is emphasized more heavily due to the standards of learning. Teachers use various approaches to teach sight-reading. One strategy teachers can use is metacognition during the sight-reading process. However, there is limited research on teachers' perspectives on metacognition in middle school. Metacognition involves self-awareness, self-evaluation, and self-regulation. By engaging in these activities, learners can gain better control over their thought processes. This is especially important for music educators, since music learning and practice involve many metacognitive concepts. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the information needs and information-seeking behaviors of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) information community. To evaluate and define these needs and behaviors a literature review of research contributions published by established information professionals studying MMORPG and video game players was performed. The results showed that the MMORPG community is considerably understudied and lacking sufficient library programming and educational opportunities compared to other communities. It also revealed their dependence on collaboration and the promotion of social connection between members. Recurring Coups In The Sahel Region Likely To Strain U.S. Resources, Autumn Tewksbury, Anthony Zampino, Shay Dauphinais, Andrew Britland

This client report examines recurring military coups in the Sahel region of Africa and the probability of implications for U.S. interests. We incorporated analysis of terrorist organizations, adversarial involvement in the region, and projected socioeconomic factors in the next three to five years. Our analysis indicates these factors could pose a direct threat to U.S. national security interests. Current U.S. policy prohibits aid distribution to coup governments, increasing the likelihood that Sahelian countries will turn to U.S. adversaries for economic support. An additional aspect to consider is the Sahel’s natural resources and economic opportunities. Our project utilizes in-depth research, geospatial …

Jesuit colleges and universities in the US have been striving to become anti-racist. This work is often tied to mission and to a shared commitment to Jesuit and Catholic values like a faith that does justice and the dignity of all persons. At the same time, however, many Jesuit institutions frame their commitment to anti-racism in language that does not appeal to specific aspects of Jesuit tradition; likewise, mission and Jesuit identity is often described in ways that make no overt reference to anti-racism. This Social Justice Strategy asks students to immerse themselves in abolitionist waters by learning abolitionist perspectives, strategies, and practices from a local abolitionist, transformative justice, or mutual aid organization while providing them a service or fulfilling one or more of their needs. This is a self-paced, term-long project scaffolded by abolitionist histories and best practices for working in community. The instructor uses a student survey as a basis for forming groups and matching them up with local organizations, then students create plans for working together, including how to address conflict restoratively. A major challenge for abolitionist teaching is uprooting the assumption that carceral systems are natural and inevitable. This essay describes strategies for teaching about the colonial capitalist origins and white cisheteropatriarchal development of the police, and the critical theorization and abolition of policing, in a hyper-politicized minefield. These strategies emerged from teaching, “The Global Politics of Policing,” after the Summer of 2020 in the Midwest, where abolitionist critiques were frequently met with burning resentment. The reflections in this article are grounded in my experience teaching a graduate-level special topics course on media and abolition at the University of Alberta in 2023. In this article, I draw upon my experience teaching this course in order to offer a general framework for integrating abolitionist principles into the media studies classroom. This paper argues for the necessity of pleasure in abolitionist pedagogy as a condition for sustaining movements toward collective liberation. Grounded in abolition feminism and radical pedagogy, it introduces the “Pleasure Activism Lineage” (PAL) as a tool for cultivating campus movement communities through joy, care, and collective resistance. Drawing on adrienne maree brown’s framework of pleasure activism, the PAL assignment invites students and educators to trace transformative influences, reclaim subversive forms of joy, and build solidarities rooted in liberatory traditions. “Critical Prison Studies in Dialogue: Teaching and Learning” is a multi- week, undergraduate project that combines critical thinking, collaboration, and an analysis of the social relations and material logics of carceral systems in the U.S. It consists of a series of carefully scaffolded activities that create space for students to imagine a world in which incarceration is not the logical answer to the political and social problems that plague us. It also asks students to theorize, experience, and reflect on the process of abolition-feminist movement building on multiple scales within and outside the classroom.

The Rhetoric Of Imperial Felicitas As A Political Tool In Late Antiquity, Martin Shedd

This article surveys the rhetoric of imperial felicitas (good luck) in Latin literature of the fourth and early fifth centuries in response to Erik Wistrand’s monograph Felicitas Imperatoria (1987). By including not only the emperor’s fortunes, but also the fortunes of the political community directly attributed to his presence or actions in its definition, it presents a more complete analysis of relevant political rhetoric. It demonstrates that the tropes of panegyric were manipulated by petitioners to facilitate political action. Finally, it concludes that the author of Historia Augusta intentionally subverts these tropes to envision a different political system for Rome.
