The Genji no monoga ta ri 源氏の物語, the Tale of Genji, b y the Japanese court lady Murasak i Shi kibu 紫式部 ( c . 9 7 3 – c . 1014), thought to have been completed around the year 1008, is one literary masterpiece of the Heian 平安 period (794–1185) that has been adapted for retelling many times. A little over one hundred years after its conception it had been adapted and lavishly illustrated as an emaki 絵 or “ picture scroll." A Town Divided: Leadership At Hoxie, Rodney W. Harris

The Ozark Historical Review

Five elected School Board members, a School Superintendent, and local leaders in rural Hoxie, Arkansas, were people of strong beliefs who in 1955 desegregated their school district. In this article, I argue that a combination of moral leadership and pocketbook concerns drove these men to oppose outside forces intervening in Hoxie, Arkansas, and that by doing so these men created a precedence of using the federal courts to uphold integration.

Since Britain’s imperialistic ventures were always intimately connected with domestic forces, I have chosen to divide my investigation into two main sections: the first analyzing the role of the Mediterranean, particularly Greece, in British culture and intellectual history prior to and during full-scale expansion, and the second presenting an account of Britain’s Mediterranean campaigns proper.

The article addresses images of sacrifice from Mesoamerica and the adoption of this imagery during Protestant colonization as a way to limit the Spanish power. The author posits that while initially serving the purpose of demonizing the Spanish Catholic presence in the Americas, the use of this imagery led Protestant powers to assert claims of religious and political superiority over both the Spanish and the indigenous peoples.

There is perhaps no other external article which is more closely tied to one’s sense of identity than clothing. With a quick glance, one can readily gauge a person by their dress. So too, in the sixteenth century; clothing was used to construct identity, and in some cases to deconstruct it as well. This paper seeks to explore how identity and clothing are in many ways, inseparable. Concepts of religiosity, gender, nationalism, and “the other” were all intimately tied to dress and fashion. The Carolingian monastery lived in an unresolved tension between the purity of separation from the world and the benefits to be gained from secular engagement. To confront this dilemma, the parts of the monastery received new layers of symbolic meaning, opening some spaces to lay penetration while shielding others more securely. Here I will examine the monastic cloister and the nave of the abbey church as instances of these two tendencies.

Despite a significant increase in the trans and gender expansive (TGE) population in the US (Ghorayshi, 2022), pedagogies and policies have not changed at the same rate in cis-dominant choral spaces (Aguirre, 2018). Drawing from bio-ecological systems theory and trans-identity development frameworks, this qualitative research highlights the challenges and affirmations faced by TGE singers. This study also examines the pedagogical and policy-oriented frameworks within a trans and gender-expansive choral ensemble, aiming to share the unique perspectives of performers and examine how these frameworks influence identity development. Music Making To Transgress: A Phenomenology Of Transgressive American Music Educators, Anders P. Lewis

This phenomenological case study examined four self-described transgressive music teachers in the United States. Transgressive teachers may be described as those who challenge oppressive structures, both in educational settings and in the broader social context, to support marginalized students. Findings suggest that teacher identity creation and analytic frameworks of oppressive structures shape the elements of their transgressive pedagogies. These findings also suggest varied paths of becoming for transgressive teachers. The researcher concludes with suggestions for further research and implications for current teachers.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine elementary music teachers’ planning times. The existing literature on planning time is scarce and the literature on elementary music teachers’ planning time is nearly non-existent. Musical instruments have been recognized as attractive targets of volitionally developed long-term engagement. However, in music education research, the significance of autonomy in fostering learning motivation has mainly been perceived through the prism of student-teacher interaction. Addressing this gap, this study shifts the focus towards an autonomous learner perspective embracing the learner’s volitional approach and interest in engaging with musical instrument learning. In this paper I explore the possibilities of a Universal Design for Learning (UDL)-inspired curriculum developed over four years of teaching a module on choral conducting education in three formats: online, as blended, and in-person. The learners were primary school generalist student-teachers. They had diverse backgrounds, experiences, and levels of confidence in choral singing and conducting. Examining UDL through the theoretical lens of inclusive pedagogy offered a theoretical foundation to discuss my approach to creating inclusive choral conducting environments that promote learning and participation. The history of social philosophy is a history of suspicion toward the aesthetic (1). However, since we apprehend social reality fundamentally through its aesthetic appearances, an account is needed of how “the aesthetic” must enter the social-philosophical discourse, particularly in reconstructive models of social critique. I call this account “social aesthetics.” Social aesthetics illuminates how certain social experiences generate normative claims even in the lack of discursive articulation. For decades, epic fantasy has been predominantly associated with the Anglo-American tradition, exemplified by authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert E. Howard. However, this perspective neglects the contributions of lesser-known but equally rich traditions, such as Spanish literature. Mariano Martín Rodríguez's Fantasía épica española (1842–1903) seeks to fill this historiographical gap by exploring the Spanish roots of epic fantasy through a theoretical analysis and an anthology of representative texts. This volume not only rescues forgotten works but also redefines critical paradigms to include non-Anglophone perspectives, offering a foundational resource for rethinking the global history of epic fantasy.
