“A Field Beaten Bare Of Grass”: Samuel Youd’S The Death Of Grass (1956) And The Scouring Of The Shire, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

One of the novels Tolkien admits to liking (according to his published letters) was Samuel Youd’s thriller The Death of Grass (1956), published under the pen name John Christopher. Among the novel’s aspects that might have particularly resonated with Tolkien included environmental concerns, analogs with Tolkien’s World War II experience (especially rationing), and an emphasis on fairy-story Consolation and Recovery, among others. But in addition, parallels with “The Scouring of the Shire” and other late episodes in The Lord of the Rings clearly deserve further analysis. This paper therefore engages with Youd’s novel through that specific lens.

The Meaning Of Christian Suffering In Aquinas, Pedro Cardoso Figueiredo Santiago

This thesis investigates the theological meaning of Christian suffering in the thought of Thomas Aquinas. While much attention has been given to Aquinas’s treatment of the problem of evil, little has been written on the positive and salvific meaning of suffering as it appears in his Christology, sacramental theology, and moral theology. This study aims to demonstrate that for Aquinas, suffering—when united to Christ—acquires a redemptive value that transforms human pain into a means of configuration to the crucified and risen Lord.

The adoption of quietist theology by the Quaker community in the early nineteenth century created a divide between Quakers and their abolitionist movement due to the differing methods to achieve an end to slavery. Quaker society began to adopt a stance that avoided all controversies and employed conservative actions to combat slavery while abolitionist began to speak out more against the evils of slavery regardless of any controversy. This divided left Quaker abolitionist like John Greenleaf Whittier and the Grimké sisters with the choice to distance themselves from the Society of Friends or the abolitionist movement. “The Third Man” is the latest in a series of pieces, spanning fifteen years of iteration, for solo fretless guitar and “automatic improvisation” software. Prior works in the series have been performed throughout the United States, many of them at the New York City Electroacoustic Improvisation Summit between 2016 and 2024. The author serves as the principal performer/composer and programmer of this and prior works, which has enabled the progressive refinement of generative techniques to support very personal compositional aesthetics and performance practices. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) offer transformative potential for advancing sustainable development, aligning with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) of 72 peer-reviewed studies (2019–2025) to explore innovative models, methods, and applications of AI-IoT in promoting sustainability. Grounded in systems theory, socio-technical systems, and sustainability science, the findings highlight prevalent models, such as smart cities and precision agriculture, as well as advanced methods like machine learning and edge AI, with applications across energy, agriculture, healthcare, transportation, and water management. هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف تقييم الصفوة الأكاديمية والإعلامية الفلسطينية للقنوات الفضائية المحلية بالنظر لمستوى البرامج وتأثير الرقابة الذاتية، كون هاتين الفئتين من أصحاب الخبرة والاختصاص وتقدما نظرة مهنية بناء على معايشة للواقع. وجاءت هذه الدراسة الوصفية لإظهار مدى الرضى من عدمه لدى الصفوة الأكاديمية والإعلامية الفلسطينية إزاء أداء القنوات الفضائية المحلية. واعتمد البحث على نظريتي "الأجندة" وحارس البوابة الإعلامية ومنهج مسح أساليب الممارسة، وطبق على 206 مفردات من أصل (430) صحافيا وإعلاميا وأكاديميًا يمثلون مجتمع الدراسة الأصلي، إذ تم اختيارها بناء على أسلوب العينة العشوائية البسيطة التي تعد من أوجه العينات الاحتمالية. وأظهرت النتائج وجود دور قوي للرقابة الذاتية …

This study aimed to explore the impact of public relations strategies on the effectiveness of epidemic management in Jordan, using the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study. The study employed the descriptive-analytical method, which is based on the systematic description and interpretation of social and media phenomena. The findings revealed that public relations play a pivotal strategic role in managing health crises by building public trust, preparing communication plans, and formulating awareness messages in coordination with relevant authorities.
