Unitlessness: Highlighting The Trans-Discursive Qualities Of Nondualism And Implications For Psychological Terminology, Christian U. Krägeloh

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Nondual awareness has recently gained increased interest in broader psychological research. In meditation contexts, it reflects the dissolution of subject and object, while in Maha_ya_na Buddhism, practitioners aim to develop insight that leads to awareness of nonduality in everyday-life situations. Traditionally, teaching of nondualism employed paradoxes to prompt nonconceptual inquiry into reconciling dualistic contradictions. To offer an approach to communicate nondualism to a modern audience of psychology researchers, the framework of unitlessness is introduced here, which differentiates between linguistic characteristics (units) and experiential phenomena (unity), both within an enveloping ineffability (unitlessness). International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Advaita Vedanta is seen as something of an authoritative source for nondual philosophies and theories of consciousness that postulate a pure featureless awareness at the base of mental experience. These approaches deviate from both the lineage-based teachings of Advaita Vedanta and the necessary standards of science, constructing compromises that fall short of traditional fidelity and psychological rigor. Dialogues between psychology and Advaita Vedanta need to delineate clearly between a sensate phenomenology of experience and spiritual interpretations that may be implicit within experiential descriptions.

This dissertation explores how anti-immigration and anti-(trans)gender campaigns in the United States engage in an identity politics in which a group benefiting from heteronormative, white supremacist, and nationalist social structures discursively positions itself as an oppressed minority facing an elitist, oppressive, and parasitic establishment. While anti-transgender and anti-immigration platforms represent two distinct issues, they need to be situated within the broader context of right-wing politics. With a focus on the construction of parenthood, my dissertation juxtaposes these two forms of right-wing campaigns through a mixed-method approach by tracing the depiction of two parental figures that have recently emerged in right-wing …

This thesis asserts that Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam contains an unrecognized interpretation of the Archangel Saint Michael, thereby enriching Leo Steinberg's foundational analysis of the fresco's theological intricacies. Building on Steinberg's identification of the "glider" figure as a possible visual allusion to Michael, this study contends that Michelangelo intentionally integrated the archangel to symbolize themes of divine protection, judgment, and cosmic justice. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, the thesis draws from a range of biblical and apocryphal texts, including Revelation and The Assumptions of Moses, to illustrate that Saint Michael's traditional roles, as the protector of paradise, defender of the …

How Pentecostals Living In The United States Experience, Interpret, And Respond To Depression, Robert Mcbain

The prevalence of depression in society underscores the need for awareness and support, particularly within Pentecostal communities, where depression remains underexplored. While studies suggest how the Christian context shapes depression, the literature lacks depth about the relationship between Pentecostalism and depression. This gap risks fostering misconceptions, marginalizing sufferers, and allowing dominant voices to impose stigmatizing interpretations that discourage external help and reinforce unrealistic norms. These repercussions emphasize the need to research the relationship between Pentecostalism and depression to address stigma, create supportive environments, and ensure that sufferers retain ownership of their mental health narratives. “You Shall Be As Gods”: Xenogears, Gnosticism, And Gaming On The Mystical Marketplace At The Turn Of The Millennium, Alexander Sutton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis explores the role of Christian Gnosticism in the Japanese role-playing video game (JRPG) Xenogears, developed by Square Co. Ltd. and released in Japan and the United States in 1998. In tracing its historical context, development, and localization I argue that Xenogears is an important text in the history of mediated religion in global popular culture. In comparing the game’s narrative against ancient Christian Gnostic texts such as The Apocryphon of John, The Reality of the Rulers, and the Gospel of Judas, I show how the game harmonized, mediated, and reproduced ancient Gnostic mysticism for its players to emulate. …

Cassandra Bousquet, from Brisbane, CA, is the recent recipient of the Poetry Lighthouse Prize and received an Honorable Mention from the Ruth Weiss Foundation in their 2024 poetry contest. Her poem, “Dear Human at the Edge of Time” appears in the 2023 anthology of the same title, edited by Luisa A. Igloria, Aileen Cassinetto, and Jeremy S. Hoffman. In April 2023, she was a Writer-In-Residence at Bristol's own historic mansion and museum, Linden Place.
