Oliver Wolcott Jr.: A Political Life, John F. Lizzi
Oliver Wolcott Jr.: A Political Life, John F. Lizzi
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the nation’s second Treasury Secretary and a key figure on the national stage during the Federalist administrations of Presidents George Washington and John Adams. Upon his resignation from the federal government during the Jeffersonian takeover during the Election of 1800, Wolcott prospered for many years as a private citizen. He was later elected Governor of Connecticut, serving for ten years. This project examines his contributions to both national and state government during his nearly forty years of public service. It also evaluates the extent to which he evolved politically during his long career. Wolcott’s success …

The theory that guided this case study was Christopher Watkin’s biblical critical theory, as it provides the proper framework for interpreting how parents enculturate their children in the Christian belief system of the family. The central research question was, “How do parents participate in the Christian education and spiritual formation of their children who are enrolled in a classical Christian, hybrid-model school in …
Critical Scrutiny Of The World Of The Marriage As A Myth Of Male Power, Robiatul Adawiyah
Critical Scrutiny Of The World Of The Marriage As A Myth Of Male Power, Robiatul Adawiyah
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
For centuries, men have been considered the dominant gender, exercising hegemony over women. On the other hand, women have been conceptualized as subordinates who obey the orders of men. However, in reality, all images of male power and domination are just myths, a construction made by society to perpetuate patriarchy. Warren Farrel argues that the concept of male superiority is mistaken, as evidenced by the empirical data he presents, which shows that men have long been subordinate to women. Through the Korean drama The World of The Marriade (TWoTM), this study attempts to examine the myth of male …

Exploring The Field Of Cultural Production: The Development Of Pentigraf In Indonesia, Melania Shinta Harendika, Aprinus Salam, Sudibyo Sudibyo
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This research examines the development of Pentigraf, an Indonesian minifiction form with a three-paragraph structure initiated by Tengsoe Tjahjono to suit modern, fast-paced culture. The emergence of Pentigraf and its community, i.e., KPI (Kampung Pentigraf Indonesian or the Indonesian Pentigraf Village), influenced the dynamics of the Indonesian field of cultural production. Using Bourdieu’s theory, it analyses Pentigraf’s position in cultural production from 2016-2023 based on literature reviews, media content analysis, competition records, and participatory observations in KPI. By studying the legitimacy and consecration of Pentigraf in the cultural production field, the research provides insights into how this literary format …

Language reflects the logical structure of reality and shapes how speakers perceive themselves and their surroundings. Language relativity reinforces the connection between language and cultural behavior. This study examines the worldview of the Puger fishermen community, a speech community within Jember Pandhalungan culture, through their language use and discourse patterns. Their linguistic repertoire, shaped by coastal life in south Jember, East Java, influences their speech behavior. Using ethnographic communication methods, this study classifies and analyzes their speech discourse based on six worldview elements. Recognizing this importance, the UAE government has focused its efforts since the country's establishment on enacting public policies that enable Emiratis to integrate into both the public and private labour markets. However, these policies have faced several challenges, most notably citizens' preference for public sector employment due to factors …

The Dw2 Shipwreck: The Tobacco Pipe Finds / ספינה טרופה: ממצא המקטרות, Ofra Barkai, Anna De Vincenz, Idit Yovel Even-Zur, Jacob Sharvit
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
The excavation of the DW2 shipwreck uncovered 13 ceramic tobacco pipes. Most of the pipes are of the cup type, with a few examples of the bowl or disk-base types. All the pipes are decorated with geometric patterns; two are also adorned with floral motifs, and one bears a maker’s stamp. The pipes date from the seventeenth century to the early twentieth century CE, with most attributed to the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. Parallels were identified at several sites, including the ‘Akko 1 and Kitten shipwrecks. Petrographic analysis of eight pipes indicates they were manufactured in the geographic …

The Dw2 Shipwreck: The Carpenters’ Work / ספינה טרופה: עבודת הנגרים, Avner Hillman, Idit Yovel Even-Zur, Ofra Barkai
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
The excavation of the DW2 shipwreck revealed that the vessel was primarily constructed from Cypriot pine (Pinus brutia), with wooden nails made from Kermes oak (Quercus coccifera) and Turkey oak (Quercus cerris). Analysis of the heartwood, knots and annual rings in the ship’s wooden components indicates that the pines were old and of low quality. The ship’s construction demonstrates efficient utilization of the trees, including small wood pieces and branches. The carpenters sawed the wood in a pre-planned manner, prioritizing function over aesthetics. Tool marks on the wood suggest the use of a saw, …

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
Three excavation seasons conducted in the southern lagoon of Dor uncovered the remains of the Dor Wreck 2 (DW2) shipwreck—a 15.5 m-long trading coaster built from poor-quality but well-preserved wood. The ship was constructed using techniques characteristic of the Mediterranean shipbuilding tradition. The hull of the ship was well-preserved, indicating it could carry up to 20 tons of cargo. However, due to the scarcity of finds, it is not possible to determine the ship’s cargo. The identified wood species suggest that the ship was constructed in western Turkey or southwestern Syria. Carbon-14 dating, combined with electrochemical analysis of the corrosion …

Public Memory Through Memorialization, Sophie A. O'Brien
SPARK Symposium Presentations
This research project aims to contextualize the story surrounding various Nashville monuments that memorialize civil rights leaders. This project will explore the history of monuments and road names in Nashville. The history will span from the Confederacy to the civil rights movement and examine how public memory has evolved and changed with the removal of some statues and the changing of road names. It aims to show who we choose to memorialize and why, and how the civil rights leaders we choose to remember reflects public sentiment of the civil rights era.
African American Health Disparities: Nashville’S Efforts To Bridge The Gap, Mary Y. Spence
African American Health Disparities: Nashville’S Efforts To Bridge The Gap, Mary Y. Spence
SPARK Symposium Presentations
African Americans experience significant health disparities, including a shorter life expectancy and high mortality rate. Systemic discrimination, limited access to quality healthcare, and socioeconomic inequalities are believed to be key contributing factors. Another key factor is a historical distrust of the healthcare system as a result of unethical biomedical experiments such as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. A key figure in combating these disparities was Dr. Matthew Walker Sr., a pioneering African American physician whose contributions to medical education and healthcare access helped improve the well-being of underserved populations. Dr. Walker trained numerous Black physicians and established the Matthew Walker Comprehensive …
