Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The craft of puns in literature is an art used in prose and poetry. There are two readings in puns: a superficial reading from which we understand what the writer does not intend, and a deep reading, the puns are found in the poems of the poet Shihab al-Din on more than one topic, and we have chosen grammar and morphology from them. The urgent necessity of this study is to add to the library of literary studies on a new topic. The purpose of our article is to reveal an aspect of

Analysing Iraqi Arabic Speakers' Voice Qualities: Gender As A Variable In Auditory-Perceptual Vpa, Narjis Abdul-Manaf Al-Salman, Wasan Alsiraih
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
This research delves into the examination of voice qualities among Iraqi Arabic speakers, encompassing both genders and age range from 20 to 45. The study employs a comprehensive auditory-perceptual analysis utilizing the Vocal Profile Analysis (VPA) scheme developed by Laver, Wirz, Beck, and Hiller (1981), later refined by Beck (2018). Data collection involves two methods: narrative pictures and open-ended responses. The findings unveil shared characteristics among Iraqi Arabic speakers: pharyngeal constriction and pronounced high nasality, particularly noticeable in females; Despite the consistent use of the advanced lingual tip/blade, the typically alveolar /l/ segment maintains a neutral position; The phonation voice …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The search for identity and social recognition is an urgent pursuit that pervades the African American literary scene. The main concern of the black writers is to portray a persona, who struggles to survive and succeed in a racially separated society. Amongst those writers is the literary figure Ralph Waldo Ellison who utilizes art to embody the blacks' ever-evolving protest against prominent sociopolitical restrictions and falsified ideologies.

Prometheus As A Mythological Hero: A Comparison Between Byron’S Poem "Prometheus" (1816) And Miller’S Novel Circe (2018), Hibbe Moussadak Muslim
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Throughout centuries, Prometheus has been regarded as an important mythological character in literature in general, and in Greek and English literature in specific. Often times he is portrayed to be an advocate for the good, or perhaps a hero to humanity, who, according to the Ancient Greeks, was significant for the discovery of fire to mankind. Other times, however, he is referred to as a mighty god who used his power and intelligence to fool the gods surrounding him, and who eventually got punished for that. The ideas of justice, humanity, and freedom are central to the story. To understand …

Beauty standards are often influenced by social values and cultural norms. What is considered to be beautiful has evolved over time and varies across cultures. These standards play a significant role in individuals' perceptions and behaviors about beauty. In addition, society places strong pressure on women to follow unrealistic beauty ideals. In today’s society, being slim is the ideal that women should follow. On the other hand, obese women are subjected to frequent judgments based on their weight and appearance. The constant exposure to social judgments and negative comments about their bodies can lead them to have body dissatisfaction, low …

Harmony Or Discord? The Intersection Of Religious Beliefs And International Mindedness, Ranjan Kumar Lima
Harmony Or Discord? The Intersection Of Religious Beliefs And International Mindedness, Ranjan Kumar Lima
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
A fundamental concept of the International Baccalaureate (IB) educational philosophy is international mindedness. International mindedness refers to being, thinking, and acting with openness to the world and an understanding of the interconnectedness of oneself with others. Despite extensive research on religious beliefs and international mindedness separately, there remains a dearth of studies exploring their intersection, especially among the International Baccalaureate (IB) teachers in their early professional years. This study examines how the religious beliefs of early adult and early-career International Baccalaureate (IB) teachers influence their perceptions and manifestations of international mindedness. This study utilizes phenomenological research strategies. It involves eight …

How Do They See Us?: Unhcr's Representations Of Syrian Refugees In “Every Second Counts” Campaign, Marah Khalid
Theses and Dissertations
Representation is not just an opinion; it is the recreation of realities, facts, and stories that encourage receivers, who are readers and viewers, to build perceptions of a certain topic, objects, events, and human beings. Studying the representation of refugees in the media, UN agencies, and International organizations' press releases, videos, and images has been the main focus for many scholars for decades. However, little is known about refugees' perspectives on visuals produced by UN agencies. This research tries to add to the few studies concerning the captured human object, refugees, perspective using Hall’s encoding/decoding model (Hall, 1997) to analyze …
Crafting Lives: Experiences Of Ethiopian Refugees In Cairo, Nayrose S. Abd El-Megid
Crafting Lives: Experiences Of Ethiopian Refugees In Cairo, Nayrose S. Abd El-Megid
Theses and Dissertations
There has been an ongoing influx of refugees for years driven by political instability, famine, and prolonged conflicts in the region, leading many individuals to seek sanctuary in other countries. Egypt has become a host country for many years, whether for settlement or transit, for various populations from different nationalities hoping to find refuge. However, amidst this influx, Ethiopian refugees often find themselves overlooked or usually associated on the sidelines with other African nationalities; their stories and struggles are marginalized in broader narratives of displacement. The experience of Ethiopians is heterogeneous and multidimensional in terms of their intersectional identities of …

Wayward Utopias: Time In Wilde And Goethe, Kafi Moghrabi Mr
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I study the dialectical relation between the Utopian imagination and a reality perceived in every way as antagonistic to hope. In the first chapter, I present Ernst Bloch’s Utopian vision, as presented in The Principle of Hope, which offers an exposition of the author’s Romantic Marxism. The second chapter engages Oscar Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, demonstrating how a life devoted to self-gratification only results in the constant deferral of Utopian longing, and how, undone, Dorian’s demise opens up Utopian possibilities as anticipated by Bloch. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s version of the …

Anxious Futures: Capital, Nation And Advertising In Beirut, Lebanon, Caitlin Alais Callahan
Anxious Futures: Capital, Nation And Advertising In Beirut, Lebanon, Caitlin Alais Callahan
Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary billboard advertising in Beirut fuels anxiety in Beirut’s citizens. In a city suffering from daily uncertainties caused by a devastating financial collapse in 2019, and mourning victims of the worst non-nuclear explosion to ever occur in the Port of Beirut in 2020, Beirutis are also faced with advertising which constantly reinforces uneasiness. Visual advertisements market visas to leave the country, purchasing second passports and money counting machines, forming quotidian reminders of the current state of the country. Using interviews and visual ethnographic material collected during the summer of 2023, this thesis discusses how billboards help to foster dialogue around …

Which Tools Can Aid The Management Of Intangible Cultural Heritage In Community Based Heritage Organizations In Cairo? A Case Study Of Shubra’S Archive, Mienke Zwemstra
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides a comprehensive overview of cultural heritage management in Cairo, focusing particularly on intangible heritage and the potential benefits of digital tools in this field. It highlights the marginalization of community-based organizations in the broader narrative of heritage management in Cairo, along with the limited alignment and collaboration between local, national and international heritage institutions. Drawing from ethnographic research conducted at the Shubra’s Archive (SARD), this study identifies the challenges faced by such organizations, including the reliance on volunteers and international funding for mission implementation. It emphasizes the importance of strategic planning and collaboration with municipal and national …

Conferences
Violence and war can be incited, and so can peace. This volume shares select addresses and responses from Seton Hall University’s 2/7/23 conference “Inciting Peace From The Inside Out.” A multi-disciplinary range of scholars each addresses how reconciliation processes grow from spiritual dynamics. Multiple religious traditions teach contemplative praxes that prioritize and nurture personal reflection oriented toward peace. Social conflicts divide, so engaging them with a partisan orientation only serves to escalate harmful rifts. In contrast, bringing personal awareness and sensitivity, spiritual balance, and holistic integral perspective to conflict can transcend divisions and work toward unity. This volume is supported …

Properness And Pluralism In Functional Beauty, Ryan Mitchell Wittingslow Phd
Properness And Pluralism In Functional Beauty, Ryan Mitchell Wittingslow Phd
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
In their 2008 monograph, Functional Beauty, Glenn Parsons and Allen Carlson develop a theory of functional beauty account based on a selected effects theory of biological function and apply it to human-made artifacts. This paper contends that their selected effects theory falls short in capturing the inherently pluralistic nature of functional beauty (FB). The paper is structured as follows. First, it provides an overview of Parsons and Carlson’s FB argument, focusing on their attribution of proper function in artifacts. Second, it analyzes how aesthetic dysfunction is conceptualized in Functional Beauty, highlighting what I take to be shortcomings in …
