“We Love You In America”: Spiro Agnew, The Media, And The Building Of An Emotional Community, Charles Holden
“We Love You In America”: Spiro Agnew, The Media, And The Building Of An Emotional Community, Charles Holden
Journal of 20th Century Media History
Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon’s often-mocked Vice President, played a critical role in building the right-wing, populist base of white working- and middle-class supporters for the Republican party. Early in his vice presidency, Agnew used his access to media to cultivate mistrust of the same media, focusing especially on television political analysis, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. In speech after speech he used the same criticisms of the media to attack other parts of American society the administration viewed as the opposition. Rather than persuading these voters on policy positions, Agnew went straight for the heart. Much to …
Karl Freund’S Hollywood Aesthetic: Maintaining Visual Style Within The Studio System, Casey Walker
Karl Freund’S Hollywood Aesthetic: Maintaining Visual Style Within The Studio System, Casey Walker
Journal of 20th Century Media History
This article explores the distinct cinematographic style of classical Hollywood cinematographer (and briefly director) Karl Freund throughout his Hollywood studio film career (1930-1950). After leaving the German studio UFA, Freund spent two decades in the Hollywood studio system, known for its comprehensible narrative and visual style and hierarchical mode of production, which were considered constraints to the emergence of a unique visual style from any one filmmaker. Previous studies on cinematographers’ authorship and poetics focus almost universally on Gregg Toland, a cinematographer who largely worked outside of the big Hollywood studios. However, very little scholarship exists on cinematographers such as …
"Pearls And All": June Cleaver, Symbol And Myth, Judy Kutulas
"Pearls And All": June Cleaver, Symbol And Myth, Judy Kutulas
Journal of 20th Century Media History
June Cleaver, the fictional matriarch of the Cleaver family on the 1950s/60s sitcom Leave it to Beaver has become a powerful symbol in American society, representing a particular version of motherhood that can be read as desirable or old-fashioned. How June became a symbol as well as a myth is what this article is about, a blend of series’ particulars, the continued willingness of the actor who played June, Barbara Billingsley, to play into the stereotype of June, the changing perspectives of boomers who watched her, and the changing possibilities of American women’s lives.
Gilbert, Jeff, Sophia Maier Garcia
Gilbert, Jeff, Sophia Maier Garcia
Bronx Jewish History Project
Summarizer: Sophia Maier
Jeff Gilbert, born 1951, grew up on Walton Avenue nearby Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Both of his parents were born in New York, with his great-grandparents and grandparents immigrating from Hungary, Austria, and Poland. Gilbert describes the neighborhood at the time as 99% Jewish, and he lived next door to the Congregation Hope of Israel, despite being educated at and attending Tremont Temple. Among the amenities in the “self-contained neighborhood for shopping” were bakeries, movie theaters, grocery stores, and butchers. Gilbert remembers most Val’s Luncheonette for the delicious food, famous athletes, and the money he made …
Revisiting Bodies In Interior Design Practice, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Revisiting Bodies In Interior Design Practice, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interiority
Addressing human bodies is inevitable in interior inquiries and practices. Integrating knowledge about human bodies into design practice can extend beyond the idea of bodies as merely static entities with fixed dimensions. The idea of bodies as the basis for spatial design practice views the human body as a living entity that dwells, occupies, moves, and engages in space. Knowledge about bodies as the basis of practice also needs to view bodies' presence as sociocultural entities. The emergence of the virtual environment provides another context with a shifting materiality of bodies and interior spaces. This issue of Interiority acknowledges the …
Assessing Relations Among Visual Variables In Hotel Lobbies Using Deep Learning, Taraneh Saniei, Mansoureh Kianersi, Shervan Fekri-Ershad
Assessing Relations Among Visual Variables In Hotel Lobbies Using Deep Learning, Taraneh Saniei, Mansoureh Kianersi, Shervan Fekri-Ershad
Interiority
To understand the relationships between cognitive variables like visual complexity, coherence, and colour contrast in interior spaces, direct numerical analysis is crucial. Conventional approaches are limited due to the brain's struggle to process visual information without cognitive manipulation. However, advancements in artificial intelligence enable direct examinations. This study used a convolutional neural network to assess the intensity of colour contrasts in images of 5-star hotel lobby interiors with high levels of coherence and complexity. The results indicated that visually complex lobby interiors have less warm-cool and dark-light contrast but more pronounced complementary contrast than coherent lobby interiors. Additionally, a negative …

Framing And Visualising Nationhood: Istiqlal Mosque And The Interiority Of The Independence Square, Jakarta, Tutin Aryanti, Amanda Achmadi
Interiority
Studies on interiority have profoundly shifted the perspective of looking at urban space as a socially constructed architectural product. This study examines the meanings invested by Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia and the patron of the mosque, in Istiqlal Mosque (1962) and the Independence Square using the lens of interiority. Rather than looking at the mosque as a single monument, this study considers the mosque and its time and spatial contexts as an architectural unity to make Sukarno's vision of nationhood manifest through the interiority of the Independence Square area in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital city. This study employed an …
Mathematical Concepts And Coding Theory In Kumārasambhavam Of Kālidāsa, Bhuvaneswari K
Mathematical Concepts And Coding Theory In Kumārasambhavam Of Kālidāsa, Bhuvaneswari K
Theses and Dissertations
Kālidāsa, a renowned Sanskrit poet and playwright from ancient India, is known for his profound understanding and depiction of various aspects of human life, nature, and the universe in his works. While his writings primarily revolve around themes of love, romance, and human emotions, there are several instances where he incorporates mathematical concepts and astronomical references.
His meticulous usage of such abstractions and symbolism adds depth and richness to his poetry. These elements serve as tools to enhance the imagery and aesthetics of his literary works, reflecting the interplay between art and science in ancient Indian culture. These subtle allusions …
Verlorene Heimat, Gefundene Leere - Michael Hanekes Trilogie Der Emotionalen Vergletscherung Und Die Nicht-Orte Des Alltags, Amber Lane
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This work examines the incorporation of the concept of non-place in Michael Haneke's Trilogy of Emotional Glaciation (1989-1994) and its connection to elements of the Heimatfilm. The trilogy introduces the concept of non-place in urban or domestic settings while exploring the decay of human relationships and societal alienation. Despite individual stories, the films share a dark atmosphere and question human existence in an alienated world. Haneke's unique film style, characterized by long takes and minimalist aesthetics, is used to examine human behavior with emotional distance. This work sheds light on Haneke's contribution to the Austrian film tradition and contributes to …

Exploring The Dutch Bruynzeel Kitchen Through The Negotiations Of Its Two Designers, Limperg And Zwart, Selin Geerinkcx, Els De Vos
Exploring The Dutch Bruynzeel Kitchen Through The Negotiations Of Its Two Designers, Limperg And Zwart, Selin Geerinkcx, Els De Vos
Interiority
During the interwar period, numerous endeavours were made to develop a rational kitchen, also called a laboratory kitchen, namely one that prioritised labour-saving efficiency through thoughtful layout and design. Catherine Beecher's work is often credited as its starting point. By synthesising household reformers' experiences and architects’ design expertise, scholars have extensively examined how rational kitchens evolved. This paper discusses the conception of the standardised Dutch Bruynzeel Kitchen (1938) by the collaborative efforts of two designers with distinct yet complementary interior design profiles. Renowned Dutch designer Piet Zwart, widely recognised for his contributions, finalised the technical drawings and promotional materials for …

(Dis)Connecting Incommensurable Relationalities: Aesthetics Of Desirable Citizenship & Interethnic Solidarity In Vietnamese/American Diasporic Media, Anh A. T. Nguyen
Communication ETDs
Employing critical diasporic rhetoric to articulate the pull and push glimmer of essentialist and nationalistic agendas of constructing Vietnamese diasporic subjectivities, I elucidate the complicated structure of diasporic nationalism that gives shape to ambiguities, paradoxes, and contradictions of Vietnamese diasporic withdrawal and regroupment in interethnic politics. Through three case studies explicating Vietnamese diasporic responses to the Chinese virus rhetorics, the appearance of the South Vietnamese flag on January 6 Capitol grounds, and the Atlanta shootings in Saigon Broadcasting Television Networks (SBTN), I highlight how Vietnamese diasporic authorities perform and enact citizenships of becoming desirable, which elevates oppressive forces of ideological …
Grievability And The Contingency Of Life Value In Twenty-First-Century Science Fiction, Emily A. Reiff
Grievability And The Contingency Of Life Value In Twenty-First-Century Science Fiction, Emily A. Reiff
English Language and Literature ETDs
Using Judith Butler’s framework of grievability, this dissertation explores twenty-first-century science fiction by British, Irish, and Caribbean authors whose novels grapple with legacies of colonialism and imperialism that relied on dehumanization and subjugation. Beginning with Sarah Maria Griffin’s Spare and Found Parts (2016), chapter one explores neocolonial rationales—purportedly based on health—which recreate colonial divisions of class and labor and enforce systems of diminishing grievability in a post-apocalyptic Irish context. Chapter two contends that Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun (2021) illustrates the danger inherent to value systems that center “normative” embodiment in worlds that reconfigure hypercapacitated human beings as the …

Waking Up The Snake: Ancient Wisdom For Regeneration, Anne Poelina, Bill Webb, Sandra Wooltorton, Naomi Joy Godden
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The Anthropocene exposes the colonial paradox: ‘that Indigenous people were right all along, that landscapes are neither inert nor mute, but imbued with vitality’ (Ghosh, 2021, p 256). Now, humans must speak out to represent the vital living earth, to return persons of all species to cultures, stories and places. This is called ‘Waking up the Snake’ – using the ancient wisdom of our places to awaken the consciousness of the people to their obligations of stewardship through an ethic of care and love. Serpent goes by many names, being integral to Australia’s Earth Dream, a 65,000-year-old story of sentient …

Uncertain Future Dwelling: Emergent Interiors Of The Metaverse, Belinda J. Dunstan, Michael Stonham, Demet Dincer
Interiority
Contemporarily, a flood of digital interior architectural imagery has emerged of spaces developed for the Metaverse, a forthcoming immersive 3D virtual world. These spaces are not bound by the conventions of architectural practice nor the demands of the physical world, providing an opportunity for design exploration and innovation in the future of interiors and positing challenges to core architectural concepts that have accompanied traditional practice. This research offers a visual analysis of aesthetic trends and new typologies present in the interior architectural spaces designed for the Metaverse. The analysis features a curated and collaged collection of works from ten creators …
Inheritance And Development Of Chinese Kang In Interior Space, Long Yang, Safial Aqbar Zakaria
Inheritance And Development Of Chinese Kang In Interior Space, Long Yang, Safial Aqbar Zakaria
Interiority
The Chinese kang is an ancient technology that combines an integrated household system for cooking, sleeping, and heating. Most of the existing research focuses on the energy performance of Chinese kang and its impact on the interior environment and tries to adapt it to the modern interior space through the improvement of its technology. However, if we only focus on the research and improvement of the technical level of Chinese kang, it is not conducive to the effective inheritance and development of the culture. This paper studies the concept of 'inheritance and development' of Chinese kang culture more comprehensively …

Examining Dwelling Interior Conditions For Informal Settlement Upgrading Along The Mae Kha Canal, Chiang Mai, Patcharaporn Duangputtan, Nobuo Mishima
Interiority
This article delves into the internal features of habitat in slum-like informal settlements, focusing on the challenges faced by the locale in the Mae Kha Canal informal settlements in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The study aims to clarify the dwelling characteristics as well as understand the interplay between housing and the living circumstances of the occupants. A mixed-methods approach was utilised, primarily employing field surveys, house investigation including arrangement and utilisation of space, and in-depth interviews with residents. A total of 80 households were sampled and analysed. The findings reveal that the previous relocation plans made by local authorities, which offered …

Review Of Queer Data Studies, Jordan Meyerl
Review Of Queer Data Studies, Jordan Meyerl
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
In Queer Data Studies, editor Patrick Keilty compiles essays from scholars and practitioners exploring the relationship between data and queer subjects. Utilizing a cross-disciplinary approach, the volume encourages readers to rethink what constitutes queer data and how queer subjects choose to interact with a world where surveillance is increasingly regarded as the norm. This review provides readers with an introduction to the book’s 10 chapters, while also evaluating its strengths and weaknesses and highlighting avenues for future research in this budding field.

Review Of War On Record: The Archive And The Afterlife Of The Civil War, Rose Buchanan
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
In War on Record: The Archive and the Afterlife of the Civil War, historian Yael A. Sternhell explores the creation, compilation, and publication of official records of the American Civil War and how archival processes shaped what we understand Civil War history to be today. This book is a logical outgrowth of Sternhell’s previous examinations of Confederate records and Civil War historiography and reflects the “archival turn” that she and other humanities and social sciences scholars have embraced in recent decades. Written in a clear, narrative style and punctuated by a wealth of interesting anecdotes uncovered in the records, …

Eugenics And Feminism: The Reflections Of Two Ideologies In The Reproductive Policies Of The Nazi Regime, The Reunification Period, And Present-Day Germany, Sydney Reil
Undergraduate Honors Theses
German abortion law is restrictive for a Western European nation of strong economic standing and with relatively liberal social policy. Additionally, Germany is one of few Western European nations without an embryopathy indication, which allows for exceptional abortions in cases of fetal defects. The law (as it stands in 2024), has been immeasurably shaped by two ideologies, eugenics and feminism, and by modern Germany’s consideration of both the ideologies themselves, and of how they influenced the reproductive policies of the twentieth century. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the influences of eugenics and feminism on German reproductive law …

The broadcasting landscape in the United States includes a limited number of Spanish-speaking networks that serve the Hispanic community. As part of the accessibility regulations in place, the Federal Communications Commission issued the first closed captioning quality rules in 2014, which apply in the same manner to English and Spanish pre-recorded and live programming. Over the last few years, comprehensive studies assessing the quality of closed captioned broadcasts have begun to emerge, either led by or in collaboration with Media Accessibility researchers. These kinds of projects have shed some light on the strengths and weaknesses of current live closed captions, …
