Biblical Choice Model: A St. Augustine-Inspired Approach To Behavioral Economics, Adebukola Adebayo
Biblical Choice Model: A St. Augustine-Inspired Approach To Behavioral Economics, Adebukola Adebayo
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Economics as defined by Lionel Robbins (1932), is a science which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses. While human behavior relates to how wants and desires are coordinated given decision-making mechanisms, social customs and political realities of society, the natural end of individual human actions should be eudaimonia (human flourishing). However, since sin has affected both our emotive and cultural plausibility structures, thereby leading to a distortion in our wants and desires and ability to desire the good, this has led to a generation that is self-ruling, self-creating and self-evaluating. The …
An Exploration Of The Big Five Traits And Effective Private Music Teachers, Christopher James Ozorio
An Exploration Of The Big Five Traits And Effective Private Music Teachers, Christopher James Ozorio
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite research studies on the dispositions of successful music educators, few studies have been published on the relationship between Big Five traits and successful private music instructors in a for-profit setting. By documenting these findings, educators will gain insights into effective traits, enabling them to refine their approach to music lessons in a private business setting. The author identifies this specific area of music education as needing to be explored and documented through qualitative research. Surveyed instructors from Arizona (N=12) indicate a significant correlation between high scores on certain traits of the Big Five and success in the private teaching …

Creating Thinking Classrooms In Music Education: Teacher And Student Perspectives Of Twenty-First-Century Instruction, Dave Mcgarry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite changes to provincial documents in British Columbia, many music educators still rely on traditional teaching methods. This convergent mixed methods case study aimed to understand student and teacher perspectives on twenty-first-century instruction in the music classroom, providing insights to enhance and enrich experiences in musical learning. Data were collected from thirty-one students in a singular grade nine to twelve instrumental band class through interviews, lesson journals, direct observations, surveys, student artifacts, field notes, and pre-and post-test measures. The study analyzed students' musical self-confidence inventories and examined the effects of a twenty-first-century student-centered curriculum over six weeks. This curriculum emphasized …

Print Culture In New York: The Essence Of The Benevolent Empire From 1816 To 1837, Merritt Morgan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Print Culture in New York: The Essence of the Benevolent Empire from 1816 to 1837 is a story that places technological and organizational business innovations at the center of the American evangelical print culture of the "Benevolent Empire" during the Early Republic. After about 1815, during the "market revolution" (western expansion, eastern urbanization, and boom in trade and manufacturing), the business of benevolence boomed in religious publishing that inspired American merchants and prominent businessmen to consolidate hundreds of missionary, Bible, and tract societies. The consolidation process resulted in the creation of national benevolent societies that produced the first wave of …

Are You Really Qualified? Overcoming The Challenges Of Authentic Voice In Characterization Across Race And Gender, James B. Myers
Are You Really Qualified? Overcoming The Challenges Of Authentic Voice In Characterization Across Race And Gender, James B. Myers
Masters Theses
This thesis challenges the idea that writers lack the qualifications to write in authentic voice across race and gender. The artist’s statement explains the origin of the novel and the driving forces that contributed to the creative manuscript. The desire to develop a piece of historical fiction with characters of different races and genders necessitated an in-depth critical analysis. In the analysis of the obstacles associated with writing across race and gender, the thesis identifies challenges, the psychological aspects of character development, and the solutions to overcoming inherent problems. God’s Word and unwavering love is woven throughout the work to …

Hip Hop Performing Arts Charter Schools: The Future Of Arts Education In Predominantly Non-White, Low Income, Underserved Rural Areas Of Louisiana, Anthony P. Shelton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Some still view arts education as a non-essential extracurricular activity despite its benefits. Even though the Every Student Succeeds Act acknowledges arts education is a healthy and well-rounded subject, local, district, and state administrators still control budget allocation and cuts, which generally affect arts education. There has also been a decline or lack of interest in traditional learning methods in the arts and core subjects. Alternative student learning forms have shown benefits in suburban, urban, and inner-city schools. Still, there is little information about these methods in predominantly non-white rural schools. Research using qualitative methods examines the potential effectiveness of …
Fallenness, Sustainment, And Judgment: Analyzing Coherency In The Thematic Trajectory Of Qohelet, Albert R. Portillo Jr
Fallenness, Sustainment, And Judgment: Analyzing Coherency In The Thematic Trajectory Of Qohelet, Albert R. Portillo Jr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study has sought to establish a basis for coherency in Qohelet’s theological appeal by analyzing a thematic trajectory underpinned by the rhetoric of Qohelet’s emphasis on vanity, joy, and judgment. These emphases follow what have been labeled projectile themes, which aim at particular points, carrying the audience from one thought to another. These thoughts are deeply correlated and best recognized as the substance forming Qohelet’s framework from which Qohelet’s teaching flows. In other words, Qohelet’s thoughts, revealed by his thematic emphasis and endpoint, function as an evangelistic appeal to a theological worldview, whereby the minds and hearts of his …

An Examination Of “The Vine” Motif Through The Lens Of The Old Testament, The Books Of John And Revelation, And Peripheral Extrabiblical Sources, Ellsworth C. Huling Iv
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Motifs and themes are interchangeable, used in everyday speech, and common in scholarly literature. Some scholars view motifs and themes as the two most used forms of narrative repetition. “The vine” motif contains multiple meanings throughout the Old and New Testaments. Sometimes, “the vine” readers misunderstand motif-specific referents. Research on “the vine” motif can clarify those specific passages of Scripture that utilize this motif. The interpretation of Scripture is not easy to understand without a proper understanding of the vine motif. Throughout Scripture, especially in the Old Testament, Israel is “the vine.” In the Gospel of John, Jesus is “the …

Shaping Worldviews: Helping High School Seniors Manage The Influence Of Social Media, Geoffrey Michael Janes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The rapid development of technology in recent decades has brought with it many unforeseen challenges. This project focuses on the challenge of learning to manage the influence social media has on worldviews. Young people are consuming information on social media with little or no instruction on how to discern what is real or true. Worldviews are being shaped by influencers who proclaim ideological messages that are often in conflict with a biblical Christian worldview. As with any tool, social media in the hands of a trained user can be used powerfully for good. Without a proper understanding and awareness of …

The Case Of Slavery In Colonial Georgia: The Failure Of The Trustee Period And Georgia’S Peculiar Approach To Revolution, 1732-1782, Charles Thornton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Few historical works underscore the founding of Georgia and its path to success as the thirteenth and final British North American Colony. How did Georgia economically survive as the southernmost British North American Colony without allowing slavery, as well as other categories that economically benefited colonies in British North America? This dissertation highlights colonial survival in the British North American Colonies. The Trustees’ vision for Colonial Georgia contradicted with the vision of the settlers of the colony. Settlers believed that land ownership without the tail male restriction and allowance of slavery to be essential components for the economic existence and …

Understanding Millennial Women Worship Leaders’ Perceptions Of Full-Time Ministry Through Their Lived Experiences, Katie Sheree Lenehan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Millennials are the largest employed generation. Yet, with more women in vocational worship ministry than ever, roadblocks remain for Millennial women seeking to thrive and last in this sphere. There becomes a need to understand the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical challenges uniquely facing the Millennial woman worship leader, for these challenges are not necessarily new but certainly are unique in ferocity and how they present themselves to the Millennial woman. Understanding Millennial women worship leaders’ lived experiences becomes vital in retaining and promoting healthy ministry practices that enable long-term vocational success.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Jerome Bonaparte (J.B.) Robertson and his son, Felix Huston Robertson, are two figures from Texas whose significance to Texas history and Civil War history has been overlooked. J.B. Robertson was a physician who came to Texas to participate in the Texas Revolution. He became a local leader and politician who took part in the state secession convention. The Robertsons were the only father and son generals to serve the Confederacy other than Robert E. Lee and his sons. J.B. Robertson was the longest serving commander of the famous Hood’s Texas Brigade and Felix Robertson was the only native-born Texan to …
A Non-Experimental Quantitative Correlational Study Of Emotional Intelligence As An Effective Tool For Pastoral Leadership, Louis Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Pastoral leadership must understand their obligation to provide and promote healthy relationships in their personal, professional, and church ministries by utilizing the effective tool of emotional intelligence (EI) to become more effective (Goleman et al., 2013; Hendron et al., 2014; Chavous et al., 2023). The concept and usage of EI have experienced continued growth within the secular and academic organizational fields. However, there is little research on EI among the Christian pastoral leadership, the church, its associated ministries, and its educational institutions (Hendron et al., 2014). As noted by scholars, this gap in the literature and the credibility crisis of …
Cold War Merchants And The Commercialization Of Space, Sandra Jeneane Piseno
Cold War Merchants And The Commercialization Of Space, Sandra Jeneane Piseno
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
During the Cold War, several merchants commodified space exploration and human spaceflight. Beginning with defense contractors who supported the development of missiles for national security and artificial satellites for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), industry and government collaborated to form consortiums which promoted U.S. dominance in space. The initiatives resulted in research and development of innovative technology which the U.S. government used to propel hegemony, leading to commercial industries taking an active role in space. The impact of Sputnik created a new competitive environment in which Western economic methods facilitated the commercialization of space, capitalizing on market-based production of goods …
Implementing A Discipleship Strategy Plan For Lay Leaders At Redemption Baptist Church To Help Them Grow Spiritually, Robermann Dorceus
Implementing A Discipleship Strategy Plan For Lay Leaders At Redemption Baptist Church To Help Them Grow Spiritually, Robermann Dorceus
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Discipleship may not be a requirement for salvation. However, it is a requirement for spiritual development and a command that Jesus has given all His disciples to obey. Christians must understand that they are Jesus' followers with a calling to bring others to Christ. Jesus makes it clear when He calls His disciples to follow Him. He calls them to follow so that they can become disciple-makers (Matt 4: 19). However, some members, mainly lay leaders at the church, whose responsibility is to disciple others, were not trained to disciple others, which creates a burden for the pastoral ministry in …

“Giving Up Their Dead”: _The Homecoming Of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’S Son_ And _A Sleep Of Prisoners_, Janet Brennan Croft
Journal of Tolkien Research
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son (published in 1953, though substantially written by 1945) is perhaps studied more frequently for its critical apparatus (the introduction on the Battle of Maldon titled “Beorhtnoth’s Death” and the postscript on ofermod) and as a source for Tolkien’s thoughts on war and heroism than as an actual play to be performed. Recently Tolkien’s own recording of the play, performing both voices and including sound effects, became more widely available, encouraging us to consider it AS a play again.
Christopher Fry’s A Sleep of Prisoners (1951) shares a number of characteristics with …

The Impact Of The Jordanian Education System On Syrian Refugee Identity, Victoria Wiese
The Impact Of The Jordanian Education System On Syrian Refugee Identity, Victoria Wiese
Capstone Collection
Jordan currently hosts 1.3 million Syrian refugees, with 48% of those refugees being children. Many of these children are currently enrolled in the Jordanian education system, both in host communities and in refugee camps like Za’atari. As such, the future of education for these children holds a great deal of importance, especially because education plays a significant role in the shaping of cultural identity and can have a considerable impact on a child’s future success. This exploratory research is based on the opinions of six Syrian refugee fathers from the Irbid community in the North of Jordan. It examines Syrian …
