Unleashing Hegemonic Horizons In Kavita Kane’S Cultural Literary Landscape, Durga R
Unleashing Hegemonic Horizons In Kavita Kane’S Cultural Literary Landscape, Durga R
Theses and Dissertations
Mythology cannot be defined as a set of stories but these stories culturally bind, and make people understand their tradition. It also serves as a conduit of worldview and makes people realise their position in the cosmos. Mythopoeia is the art of myth-making that either a new myth is created or some alterations are made in the point of view or identity of the characters after adapting the framework from the original. The present research aims to explore the presence of cultural hegemony in the select works of the Indian mythopoeic writer Kavita Kane.
Kavita Kane (1966) is a former …

Acknowledging Dispossession: A Cda/Pda Perspective On Discourse Dealing With Unceded Land, J. R. Martin, Priscilla Angela T. Cruz
English Faculty Publications
This paper illustrates what can be revealed by a linguistic analysis of the discourse strategies deployed in a bilingual text acknowledging the dispossession of Indigenous peoples in Mindanao (Philippines). The analysis draws on systemic functional linguistics (SFL) descriptions of English, which model language as a resource for making meaning. It explores the choices involved from the perspective of critical discourse analysis (CDA), exposing language in the service of power, and positive discourse analysis (PDA), appreciating language as an instrument of social change. In doing so we exemplify the role of SFL-informed CDA/PDA in processes of reconciliation, including personal and public …
Milton: Politics Of Desire And Dispossession, Sawyer K. Kemp
Milton: Politics Of Desire And Dispossession, Sawyer K. Kemp
Open Educational Resources
In this course we will study John Milton’s most famous poem, Paradise Lost, alongside a selection of his major verse and prose works. Milton’s literary projects were inextricably political, and we will wade into the discourse of his legacy as either—or both—state propagandist or public scholar. We will discuss and explore Milton’s role in the charged political climate of the British Revolution of the 17th century, as well as his work on gender, marriage, divorce, the free press, sin, and heroism.
How do we read Milton’s work in our own political climates of unrest? How has deconstruction of …
A Survey Of Improvisation Activities In Average-Age Beginning Piano Method Series And A Sample Two-Year Improvisation Curriculum, Qiwen Wan
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout music history, improvisation has always been part of piano learning and is a mode of expression for the creation of new music. Current research in music education, such as Dr. Edwin Gordon and others indicates that immersion in music improvisation is crucial in beginning students’ acquisition of music skills. However, recent studies demonstrate a continued lack of improvisation activities in their students’ piano studies that complement current research in music education, and fewer studies reviewed improvisation curricula in average-age piano methods. Therefore, there is a need for a study that examines the current state of the improvisation curriculum in …
The Balancing Act Of Justice: Juggling Affects In The Pursuit Of Fairness, Andrea Allen
The Balancing Act Of Justice: Juggling Affects In The Pursuit Of Fairness, Andrea Allen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation, I aim to examine the different identifications and affects that occur in the pursuit of justice as explored in early modern texts. I explore the relationship, and differences, between pity, compassion, and mercy in various early modern texts such as Chapman, Marston, and Jonson’s Eastward Hoe; Shakespeare’s King Lear and Measure for Measure; Spenser’s Faerie Queene; and Middleton’s The Old Law. I look at the role that the imagination plays in allowing people to identify with the pain and perspectives of others, especially as it enhances or limits one's ability to sympathize with victims and offenders. Utilizing Metadata From Heterogeneous Sources Within The Framework Of The Jvmg And Golem Projects To Identify Patterns In Anime-Based Fandoms On Ao3, Zoltan Kacsuk, Xiaoyan Yang, Saskia Dreßler, Federico Pianzola, Martin Roth
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper offers an overview of the first step in the data alignment and joint research efforts between the Japanese Visual Media Graph (JVMG) and the Graphs and Ontologies for Literary Evolution Models (GOLEM) projects. Focusing on fully or in-part anime based fandoms in the Archive of Our Own (AO3) data in the GOLEM knowledge graph we connected 534 fandoms with 1,734 anime works from the JVMG knowledge graph. The fanfiction publication numbers and dates for these fandoms were then analyzed in conjunction with the various metadata available on the corresponding anime works, such as release date, genre, content rating …
Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs
Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Looking at fan activity through the lens of play, this paper considers the archiving opportunities and challenges posed by new technology for playful ephemeral fan co-creation in multiplatform digital contexts. These include technical concerns such as platform fragility and how to capture inherent liveness and temporality, but also ethical concerns such as sustainability, consent and content moderation.
To examine this, the paper takes fan-created alternate reality games (ARGs) as a particular example of such archiving challenges. It first describes a real example of such a game, ‘Blow the Man Down’ before introducing speculative design as a method to consider a …
Do Androids Dream Of Bad Tv?: Un/Originality In Neil Burger’S Voyagers, Tom Ue, Callum M. Mcnutt
Do Androids Dream Of Bad Tv?: Un/Originality In Neil Burger’S Voyagers, Tom Ue, Callum M. Mcnutt
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Critics did not take kindly to Neil Burger’s Voyager (2021). On Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored a dismal 25%, and the consensus is that it’s a trip best not taken: “It has a game cast and a premise ripe with potential, but Voyagers drifts in familiar orbit rather than fully exploring its intriguing themes.” This article seeks neither to reclaim the film as an unjustly neglected cinematic masterpiece nor to assert its importance in the canon of dystopian works. Rather, it treats Voyagers as a test case for exploring our own critical investment in the genre. Our aims are …
2024: An Ai Odyssey, Margaret A. Murray
2024: An Ai Odyssey, Margaret A. Murray
Feminist Pedagogy
This critical commentary examines the potential implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on feminist pedagogy. Drawing on the work of Wellner and Rothman (2020), Toupin (2023), and Adam (1995), this paper considers how AI could be used to advance feminist pedagogy, but raises a series of concerns as well. Challenges to critical thinking and motivating students are raised. Finally, the paper concludes by arguing for bringing AI and conversations about its use into the classroom in a way that is mindful of its potential and limits.

Lessons From A First Year Seminar: Teaching “Mean Girls” To Become “Nasty Women”, Elif S. Armbruster Phd
Lessons From A First Year Seminar: Teaching “Mean Girls” To Become “Nasty Women”, Elif S. Armbruster Phd
Feminist Pedagogy
This essay explores what happened in a First Year Seminar on "Nasty Women in American Literature" when a group of students, instead of embracing the strength and independence that the phrase "nasty woman" came to embody, turned into a group of "mean girls"--led by a "queen bee"--and dominated the course through alliance-building, gossip, and distraction. The Suffolk University English professor teaching the course explains the challenging environment that ensured and what she learned from the experience, enabling her to make important changes in her teaching of the course the following semester.
Feminist Iterations Of “The Implosion”: New Techniques For Teaching About Science, Technology, And Society Through The “Implosion Project”, Maya Cruz
Feminist Pedagogy
This article outlines a new and explicitly feminist iteration of Professor Joseph Dumit’s (2014) “Implosion Project.” The “Implosion Project” is a classic pedagogical technique used widely in the field of Science and Technology Studies as an innovative way to teach students to critically engage with the complex relationships of science, technology, and society, and provides an important opportunity to center an explicitly feminist pedagogical approach when teaching students about the systems of power that shape, and are shaped by, the complex relationships between science, technology, and society. Since the “Implosion Project” does not center an explicitly feminist pedagogical approach, this …
A Matter Of Life And Death: The Conceptualization And Theological Significance Of Blood In The Pentateuch, Jared Greer
A Matter Of Life And Death: The Conceptualization And Theological Significance Of Blood In The Pentateuch, Jared Greer
Master's Theses
This 2024 Master of Theological Studies thesis at Lipscomb University analyzes the conceptualization and theological significance of blood within the Pentateuch. While the thesis does attend to various anthropological concerns (i.e., the sociocultural understandings of blood that inform the text), it is more chiefly concerned with how such understandings of blood contribute to the broader theology of the Pentateuch. Using a canonical interpretive approach that respects both the diachronic nature of the text and the theological unity intended by its final redactors, the thesis primarily explores the two principal contexts in which blood appears in the Pentateuch: Israel’s cultus and …

Kim Kook Jin’S The Pieces Of Korean Melody For Piano: An Analysis Of Pedagogical Elements And Korean Folk Traditions, Seoyeon Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
In this era of increased globalization, our education system is actively embracing multiculturalism, with educators incorporating diverse perspectives into their classrooms. A noticeable trend among music educators is the introduction of compositions by non-white male composers at conferences and in educational publications. In fact, we can now find more pedagogical pieces featuring distinctive musical languages and cultural influences, marking a shift from the predominantly European tradition seen in the past.
However, there remains a limited number of pedagogical pieces that display the musical cultures of Asian countries. Particularly in Korea, it is extremely difficult to find compositions with Korean musical …

Selected Commissioned Works For Solo Piano By National Artists For Music In The Philippines' National Competitions For Young Artists (Namcya) In The Philippines, Almond See Ponge
Theses and Dissertations
This document examines the importance of the role of the National Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in the Philippines and its commissioned competition pieces for solo piano by Philippine National Artists for Music. It underscores the significance of NAMCYA’s contribution to nurturing young talents and enriching Philippine piano literature that helps strengthen its national identity. An analysis of selected commissioned works by Col. Antonino Buenaventura, Lucrecia Kasilag, and Ramon Santos, shows the integration of Western and Filipino musical idioms with neo-classical, neo-romantic, and contemporary composition techniques. Performance notes are also provided to assist future pedagogues and performers of these works.

“That Desolate Section Of Dixiecrats And Hookworms”: The Rise And Fall Of The Cio In Sumter, South Carolina, 1927-1950, Stephen Malenowski
Theses and Dissertations
In March of 1942, the Williams Furniture Company of Sumter, South Carolina signed the first union contract in Sumter County history, the Congress of Industrial Organization’s (CIO) United Furniture Workers of America Local 273. This contract provided the CIO with one of their largest victories in all of South Carolina and helped create a sense of hope that the CIO could win organizing battles in South Carolina. Despite the optimism, unionization failed to spread across Sumter County during the postwar Operation Dixie organizing campaign. This thesis looks to answer why the Southern drive failed in Sumter. Local 273 did not …
王士禛對明代山左詩學的接受與建構, Xiaotong Xu
王士禛對明代山左詩學的接受與建構, Xiaotong Xu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
(Re)Imagining Decolonial Cookbooks After Deforestation, Kamran Shams
(Re)Imagining Decolonial Cookbooks After Deforestation, Kamran Shams
Theses and Dissertations
Food, like most else, is fundamentally changed by colonization. It is not just the aftermath of colonization, the settlement, that changes food—it is the act of colonial infiltrating itself. Such is the case made by Fernando Ismael Quiñones Valdivia in “Colonial Imaginations: Solitude in the Cartas y Relaciones of Hernán Cortés”—though not for food but for colonized societies broadly. More specifically, he contends that a new epistemological possibility arises when colonizer regards land as an object to be conquered, which precedes the epistemological articulation of subject/object divide. His article supplies a framework for thinking about coloniality so that a close …
Melding Of Traditions: African American Cultural And Learned Style Topics In The Music Of Roger Dickerson, Kenneth Green Ii
Melding Of Traditions: African American Cultural And Learned Style Topics In The Music Of Roger Dickerson, Kenneth Green Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Roger Dickerson, born in 1934, is an African American composer, educator, and pianist from New Orleans. His compositions include multiple works for band, orchestra, voice, choir, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. Dickerson, a two-time Pulitzer Prize nominated composer, published only one work for wind band, Essay for Band in 1958. Unfortunately, this work was rarely performed in its first sixty years, and it is not known by many band directors. In recent years, there has been a movement to program music by composers from historically marginalized and underrepresented communities. Essay for Band has benefited from this movement which also seeks …
Reflections Of Chinese Opera In Contemporary Chinese Piano Repertoire: A Cutural, Analytical, And Pedagogical Guide, Mengyu Song
Reflections Of Chinese Opera In Contemporary Chinese Piano Repertoire: A Cutural, Analytical, And Pedagogical Guide, Mengyu Song
Theses and Dissertations
Over 5,000 years, Chinese opera has been inspired by many imperial dynasties, regions, and ethnic cultures, making it a unique reflection of Chinese culture. Chinese composers have incorporated traditional Chinese opera in piano compositions to express cultural identity and artistic significance. This music has a broad and profound cultural significance, fostering cultural interchange and understanding and presenting a diverse and inclusive musical experience for non-Chinese students and musicians.
This research study provides a comprehensive overview of Chinese traditional operas, vocal technique and instrumentation, the development of piano music in China, and corresponding piano literature in progressive difficulty for early-intermediate to …
Bass-Triadic Cadence Formulae In Melchior Neusidler’S Original Compositions From Il Primo (-Secondo) Intabolatura Di Liuto, Christopher Mcdonald
Bass-Triadic Cadence Formulae In Melchior Neusidler’S Original Compositions From Il Primo (-Secondo) Intabolatura Di Liuto, Christopher Mcdonald
Theses and Dissertations
There was a paradigmatic shift in the discourse surrounding lute music between the early sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The lute treatises written by early sixteenth-century German lutenists, such as Hans Judenkünig, Hanse Gerle, and Hans Newsidler, focused on technical directives that support a linear conception of music. However, lutenists active in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, such as Matthaeus Waissel and Jean-Baptiste Besard, describe technical accommodations for vertically conceived structures. Contemporaneously, at the turn of the seventeenth century, the discourse on bass primacy and triadic structures developed from an undercurrent, cast in the shadow of counterpoint treatises, to …
“…She Complained…”: The Female Complaint And Voice In F. Scott Fitzgerald’S Works, Kristina Syrigos
“…She Complained…”: The Female Complaint And Voice In F. Scott Fitzgerald’S Works, Kristina Syrigos
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis explores the themes of female complaint and female voices in the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, specifically focusing on "The Cut-Glass Bowl," "Winter Dreams," and The Great Gatsby. Drawing on J. L. Austin's concept of performative speech and Sarah Ahmed and Lauren Berlant’s explorations of the female complaint, I argue that Fitzgerald's female characters are silenced, dismissed, and punished when they express their wants, desires, and grievances. Despite their attempts to use their voices, words, and complaints to enact change in their lives, these women are portrayed as nagging and powerless, oftentimes being punished for speaking up, …
