Defending Against Extermination: A Comparative Approach To Self-Defense In The Case Of Mass Atrocity, Christopher Davey
Defending Against Extermination: A Comparative Approach To Self-Defense In The Case Of Mass Atrocity, Christopher Davey
The Microdynamics of Mass Atrocity Working Paper Series
This paper is a comparative study of three contemporary cases of self-defense in the context of mass atrocity. I define self-defense as violence deployed by armed groups as non-state or quasi-state actors to preserve life and social group integrity. This definition acknowledges power relations as complex and violence as multidirectional. Actors include informal defenders, civilians, military actors each overlapping with varying interests. I pose the research question: what is legitimate self-defense in the context of mass atrocity, and how is it presented in the public sphere, regionally and internationally for the purpose of political support or sympathy? In doing so …

Digital Heritage Preservation Collection
This collection explores the life of Gladys Mitchell and the home she shared with her family on Detroit's Eastside. Gladys and her husband, Ossian Sweet, lived with her parents Benjamin and Rosella in a residence on 9322-24 Cairney Street from 1922 to 1925 before moving to the now-historic bungalow at 2905 Garland Street, located about a mile southeast. In 1925, when the Sweets moved into an all-white neighborhood, their experience led to a landmark Supreme Court case that affirmed African Americans' rights to homeownership, including the right to defend their private property.

SUMMARY BY: Christine Rong
Originally from Syria, Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh, Chairman of Surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital, discussed his role, hardships, and experience working during the extreme surges of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, he led a hospital serving one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in New York City. The hospital, known for its critical care services, had to adapt to the overwhelming patient surge rapidly. The book Dr. Shabsigh co-authored documents this adaptation process, offering a detailed account of the hospital’s response. …
Translation Policy In The United States, Gabriel González Núñez
Translation Policy In The United States, Gabriel González Núñez
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
As an immigrant-receiving nation, the United States (US) is home to a plurality of languages. This has led to the widespread use of translation in public life. Because of this, the US serves as a case study of how translation policy is developed and deployed in a context of ongoing immigration. This chapter provides that case study using a theoretical approach that is illustrated with historical and practical examples. It first explores the historical development of language ideology in the US and then describes current translation rules, practices and beliefs in the context of the presence of a large number …

“A Fear Of Anything Large And Alive, And Not Easily Tamed Or Destroyed”: Kaiju In The Lord Of The Rings, Kristine Larsen
Journal of Tolkien Research
The publication of The Lord of the Rings (1954-5) coincided with the start of the so-called kaiju movement in popular culture, featuring giant, sentient, and destructive creatures. Famously originating with Godzilla (1954), kaiju films have persistently cornered a portion of the popular culture market over the past 70 years; therefore, the genre would be presumed to play a role in audience expectations for the depictions of such creatures in the Jackson adaptations of the novels. In light of the June 2024 limited run of remastered versions of Jackson’s LOTR film trilogy, I analyze four of his interpretations of …
