Addresses And Speeches By Alabamians: Finding Aid, Bethany Latham
Finding Aids
This collection is comprised of printed copies of speeches and addresses given by Alabamians. The collection was put together by Dr. Alta Millican, Dean of Library Science, Communication and Instructional Media (retired 1986), most probably at the behest of Dr. Ernest Stone, University President at the time, and contains speeches sent to her by Dr. Stone as well as those she collected herself. She labeled them “Important Speeches of Alabamians” and stored them in a vertical file. Dr. Stone referred to them as “Great Speeches by Great Alabamians” and noted in correspondence that the original idea was to laminate or …

The Rise And Fall Of Internal Colonialism As A Theory Of Race In Black Political Movements And Academia, Eric Davis
The Rise And Fall Of Internal Colonialism As A Theory Of Race In Black Political Movements And Academia, Eric Davis
All ETDs from UAB
Throughout black/African history in the United States, various competitive ideas have emerged over time to take on the arduous task of theorizing race. From W.E.B. Du Bois’s famed assertion of the issue of race being one of racial discrimination--- summed up aptly as the“color line”--- to Malcolm X’s gradual recognition of the problem as one of Euro-American imperialism, to others, there has been no shortage of race theories. However, the ascension of contemporary theories of race has belied this diversity, obscuring the roles of other paradigms in shaping a mass consciousness of race, such as internal colonialism. This thesis applies …

At Springdale University, Sophie stands on the edge of a rooftop, haunted by the day her world shattered. Just as she begins to navigate her grief and the pain that lingers in her heart, her path crosses with Asher's. Asher—Springdale’s sports star perpetually in the spotlight, especially with girls—and Sophie—the class topper who shuns attention—never imagined they'd be paired for tutoring. Yet, their professor’s decision sets them on an unexpected journey. Asher carries a burden that has always been exclusive to him, but not anymore. When his mother, who once abandoned him when he was 8 years old, returns to …

Everyday Heroism And The Journey Of The Community In The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet By Becky Chambers, Jari Käkelä
Everyday Heroism And The Journey Of The Community In The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet By Becky Chambers, Jari Käkelä
Heroism Science
This article examines the impact of everyday heroism on community in the science fiction novel The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (2014) by Becky Chambers. While science fiction often features superhuman action or scientist heroes and technocratic dystopian futures, Chambers’s novel represents the recent trend of hopepunk, which sets stories within mundane social interactions to imagine gradual positive change. Instead of its action-adventure potential, the narrative in Chambers’s novel focuses on the relationships between a multi-species crew of a spaceship, creating a heightened sense of the crew as a found family where individuals come to accept and support …

The Role Of Multidisciplinary Collaborations In Publishing Innovation, Rachel Noorda, Okke Schlüter
The Role Of Multidisciplinary Collaborations In Publishing Innovation, Rachel Noorda, Okke Schlüter
English Faculty Publications and Presentations
Product innovation is crucial for the future of the publishing industry, and the objective of this study was to understand the role of multi-disciplinarity in publishing innovation teams, typical patterns of interaction between team members, and similarities and differences in multidisciplinary innovation teams across national boundaries (US, Canada, and Germany). This is an exploratory study from Portland State University, Stuttgart Media University and Toronto Metropolitan University based on twenty-one qualitative in-depth interviews with publishing employees involved in the innovation process. The study reveals that multidisciplinary innovation teams are common in all three countries. Using an input-process-output (IPO) model, researchers found …

“Feels A Lot Like Love” : Love-In(G) China In The Reform Era, Chang Qu
“Feels A Lot Like Love” : Love-In(G) China In The Reform Era, Chang Qu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This research examines the changing landscape of "love" in China during the economic reform since 1978. This landscape includes the drastic social transformations, the decentralisation of state control, and the intense processes of marketisation and privatisation of the economy. The thesis investigates the changing values, moral codes and forms of intimacy inscribed in "love", thus exploring the privatisation of the heart during China's economic reform. Although focusing on contemporary times, this research also examines the genealogy of "love" since the early moment of China's modernity, and explores the historical residuals that exist in today's emotional landscape. My research argues that …
