Beyond The Horizons Of Desire: Salme's Subjectivity In "Salman Und Morolf", Aysha M. Strachan
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Salme in the Middle High German epic poem Salman und Morolf (twelfth–fifteenth century) is conventionally read as a wild, dangerous, animalistic object waiting to be tamed by the men who fight for her hand. An in-depth analysis of her character is long overdue, and this article argues that Salme is a pertinent example of how female figures resist being “tamed” altogether. She is the movable object of multiple bridal quests for which she is ambiguously responsible. The unreachable, exoticized, and foreignized object of men’s desire, Salme embodies the drive of the western man to possess a fantasy of the Orient, …

Embroidering “Hir Word”: The Assembly Of Ladies, Christine De Pizan, And The Medieval Écriture Féminine, Akari Kobayashi
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
The authorship of the anonymous Middle English poem, The Assembly of Ladies, has been a locus of long-standing critical contestation, and amidst this debate, medieval feminist scholars have continuously and cogently advocated for the poem’s female authorship. Building on these feminist scholarships and simultaneously aiming to move beyond the scope of existing studies, whose discussion has often been limited to whether the poem was written by a woman, this article makes a deliberate and experimental decision in assuming The Assembly’s female authorship and provides a particular feminist reading of the poem enabled by this assumption. This essay examines how Lauren Groff’s novel, Matrix, creates a fictional life story for Marie de France as it minimizes the importance of the poetic corpus associated with that name. Skilled Smiths And Princes Of Elves: The Wayland-Legend And The First Age Of Middle-Earth, Lillian Hammen
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article examines the influence of the legend of Wayland the Smith, a literary figure common to medieval Germanic literature, upon the fantasy writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Although Tolkien did not publish on Wayland specifically, his scholarly interests included the figure, who frequently appeared in the Old English and Old Norse texts Tolkien studied and taught. Despite clear evidence of Tolkien’s interest in Wayland, and the frequency with which scholarly and creative discourse discussed Wayland in Tolkien’s lifetime, few scholars have engaged the connection between Tolkien’s writings and the medieval figure. This research paper explores the development of the Duramazwi Digital System, a comprehensive platform that integrates digital tools and technologies to enhance the experience of linguists and language learners. By combining the use of a dashboard, API, mobile app, and chatbot to provide users with seamless and interactive language learning experience. In the process, many books with diverse authors, perspectives, and valuable themes are getting silenced and removed from the classroom. Students everywhere have a right to see themselves within literature, as well as reflections of experiences they may be unaware of. This article researches the statistics surrounding book challenging, and offers an educational path towards inclusive teaching through a Lens of Censorship.

Books that have been on the shelves of classrooms in the commonwealth of Virginia are being removed by overzealous and misinformed parents and school board members. Supporting literacy development means allowing adolescents to read thought-provoking and edgy, high-quality texts, vetted by educated professionals, so that students can be critical curators and consumers of the wide range of media available today. Reading begets better reading, and varied texts build empathy for others. Improved literacy and empathetic criticality will benefit our commonwealth.
