Sentiment Analysis Of Harry Potter: Exploring Ai Versus Human Interpretation, Xander Newman, Katherine Elkins
Sentiment Analysis Of Harry Potter: Exploring Ai Versus Human Interpretation, Xander Newman, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
The project starts by examining whether a smaller window size of 5% allows the algorithm to determine cruxes and their sentiment more accurately than the standard 10% window size, using the passages identified by the crux report to assist me. I find that the smaller window size seems to be more accurate for the most part, but this is not always the case. Moreover, regardless of window size, the algorithm struggled with definitively assessing ambivalent sentiment, much like how a reader has their own interpretation of emotionally charged moments. Moreover, using the results of the 5% and 10% window size …

Journey To The West: A Sentiment Analysis Exploration, Ava Yu, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
Journey to the Westis one of the most influential literary works to come out of the East. Set in Tang-era China, the book is a religious allegory following a Buddhist monk and his supernatural disciples who make a pilgrimage from China to India. The chaptered format of the story lends itself to a very episodic approach to conflict & resolution in the story. The text also has a myriad of different influences; it heavily draws inspiration from Buddhist folklore, Confucianist tradition, and Daoist ideology, which were the reigning schools of thought in 16th-century imperial China(the time period in which this …
Human-Chatbot Interaction Patterns: A Topic Modeling Analysis Of 3,275 Conversations With Chatgpt, Hannah Sussman
Human-Chatbot Interaction Patterns: A Topic Modeling Analysis Of 3,275 Conversations With Chatgpt, Hannah Sussman
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
This research presents a topic modeling analysis of the WILDCHAT-FULL dataset, examining user interactions with ChatGPT across over one million conversations. The study focused specifically on extended conversations (five or more exchanges) between U.S.-based users and ChatGPT in English. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), I identified 50 distinct conversational topics with coherence scores ranging from -1.5 to -14.92 (mean: -4.47). The analysis revealed diverse interaction patterns spanning creative writing, jailbreaking (attempting to get ChatGPT to do something against its guidelines), technical discussions, business applications, and educational queries. A particularly striking finding was that creative writing and role-play scenarios dominated the …
Park Inequality In Miami: How Income And Population Density Shape Access To Green Spaces, Andre Mccloud, Katherine Elkins
Park Inequality In Miami: How Income And Population Density Shape Access To Green Spaces, Andre Mccloud, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
This data analytics project explores the relationships between park distribution, income levels, and population in Miami, Florida. Data were collected from multiple sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami-Dade GIS, and other public databases. The data were then visualized using Tableau to identify trends and patterns related to parks. The visualizations revealed that low-income areas have fewer overall parks, a significant number of “mini parks,” and are underserved relative to their population density. The findings of this project highlight inequalities in park allocation and call for policymakers to leverage this information to create equity-driven investments in low-income, high-density communities, ensuring …
Intertextual Sentiments In Ulysses And The Odyssey, Aidan Jordan, Katherine Elkins
Intertextual Sentiments In Ulysses And The Odyssey, Aidan Jordan, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
James Joyce’s masterpiece novel Ulysses is a text built upon its relationship to other texts. The very title is a reference to the Greek hero Odysseus and the epic poem that contains his story. The form of Ulyssesrelies heavily on the structure of the Odyssey for its movement. With chapters taking key events from the Odyssey as inspiration for their themes, characters, and events. One chapter for example is based on the episode where Odysseus travels into the underworld and Joyce’s stand-in character Bloom goes to a funeral. These structural and tonal suggestions have lead me to ask if this …

Instagram's 2025 Terms Of Service: The Evolution Of Surveillance Capitalism And Ai Training Data, Marisol Hernandez Brito, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
This research examines how social media platforms like Instagram’s 2025 Terms of Services (TOS) updates reflect the increasing demand for AI training data, illustrating the critical concerns about user privacy and data rights. Technology companies like Meta progressively require vast amounts of user-generated content to develop competitive AI systems to generate financial gain. Forming their data collection practices has led to their updated terms and services. In particular, their expanded AI training rights and modified dispute resolution procedures reveal the complex tension between technological advancement and user privacy. AI training data raises urgent questions about consent, ownership, and the commodification …
The Ethics Of Pitch Correction: How Technology Is Changing Musical Expression, Rachel Ferrara, Katherine Elkins
The Ethics Of Pitch Correction: How Technology Is Changing Musical Expression, Rachel Ferrara, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
The music industry has undoubtedly undergone fundamental changes since the invention of pitch correction technology, and audiences' many long-established views of "authenticity" are now being questioned. In this study, I quantitatively assess pitch correction technology's ethical and cultural implications for artist performance, public perception, industry popularity standards, and authenticity using open-source data from Spotify and Chart Masters.
Unraveling The March Sisters: A Digital Network Analysis Of Little Women's Evolving Bonds, Jessica Daugherty, Katherine Elkins
Unraveling The March Sisters: A Digital Network Analysis Of Little Women's Evolving Bonds, Jessica Daugherty, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
Little Women is one of the most female-focused novels of the 19th century. The book, being so popular, inspired numerous film and television adaptations. The three most recognized film adaptations are: 1933 directed by George Cukor, 1994 directed by Gillian Armstrong, and 2019 directed by Greta Gerwig. This project aims to analyze and compare the social networks in these three adaptations to assess how genuinely female-centric the films are. I am curious to see if there have been any changes in the social networks and if they have evolved in response to cultural context. Using AI for coding assistance and …
Leveraging Ai To Manage Your Money Better: How Financial Advisors Can Use Ai To Provide Better Service, Lewis Cropper, Katherine Elkins
Leveraging Ai To Manage Your Money Better: How Financial Advisors Can Use Ai To Provide Better Service, Lewis Cropper, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
A financial advisor is someone who works with clients to build a comprehensive plan for what they should do with their money. The best financial advisors are the ones that clients can trust when they’re going through major life changes, because money is very personal and emotional. With this being said, the wealth management industry is currently going through a major disruption with the rise in generative artificial intelligence. More and more financial institutions are integrating artificial intelligence into their business, whether it be through new planning software, enhanced fraud detection, marketing automation, or even robo advisors. The focus of …
Narrative Structures In American History: Using Sentiment Analysis To Identify Trends In Historiography, Maisie Jane Brigham, Katherine Elkins
Narrative Structures In American History: Using Sentiment Analysis To Identify Trends In Historiography, Maisie Jane Brigham, Katherine Elkins
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
This study uses sentiment analysis technology to examine six seminal comprehensive texts on American history. The texts range in publication dates from 1835 to 2018 and include notable authors such as the notorious Howard Zinn and former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. Sentiment analysis creates quantitative data based on literature that rates each sentence on a sentiment scale that identifies the level of emotional intensity or neutrality, as well as if it is positive or negative emotional intensity. By using this technology, the study aims to identify and compare the story arcs and crux points of the six books, as well …
Psychological And Social Well-Being Of Bony Fishes In Zoos And Aquariums, Ronald G. Oldfield, Patrick Bonano
Psychological And Social Well-Being Of Bony Fishes In Zoos And Aquariums, Ronald G. Oldfield, Patrick Bonano
Animal Sentience
Research on the behaviour of animals in zoos has been conducted for decades, and observations have provided information that has improved the psychological and social well-being of animals. However, research on fishes in zoos and aquariums seems to be lacking. Here, we assess the current state of research on fishes in zoos and aquariums by surveying the peer-reviewed literature. Our assessment differs from previous surveys in that we examine the taxonomic classes Chondrichthyes (sharks and rays) and Osteichthyes (bony fishes) separately. Our survey finds that bony fishes have been drastically underrepresented in zoo journals, more drastically than chondrichthyans, revealing an …
Scene Transatlantiche: Eco Italiane Nella Beat Generation, Stefano Morello
Scene Transatlantiche: Eco Italiane Nella Beat Generation, Stefano Morello
Publications and Research

Inducing And Interpreting Physical Transformation In Electroacoustic Chamber Music Via Experimental Applications Of Modular Synthesizers, Joseph Samuel Lyons
Inducing And Interpreting Physical Transformation In Electroacoustic Chamber Music Via Experimental Applications Of Modular Synthesizers, Joseph Samuel Lyons
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most rapidly evolving musical genres of the 21st century is interactive electroacoustic chamber music. This is primarily due to the ongoing developments in creative technology that have increased both the idiom's technical accessibility and its potential for artistic expression. In particular, modern modular synthesizers enable electroacoustic musicians to transform the physical characteristics of sound with an extremely fine level of control. This research project has three major goals. The first goal is to explore the relationship between the many disciplines involved in this genre of music through a review of the scholarship of Aleister Crowley, Edgard Varèse, …

Practicing Strategy And Performance Preparation Of György Ligeti’S Musica Ricercata., Xiyao Wang
Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923–2006) is renowned as one of the most significant composers of the twentieth century. Musicians around the world have admired his innovative musical language. “Through the 1950s and 1960s, he went from composing in the style of his countryman Béla Bartók to working at the cutting edge of the Western European avant-garde.” His folk elements and avant-garde compositional techniques expanded through various genres, including orchestral, chamber, and keyboard compositions. This study's primary purpose is to explore Ligeti's piano work Musica Ricercata and ultimately provide a resource to other musicians that will assist in preparing and …

Female's Digital Self-Making On Tiktok: Identity Construction Through A Framework Of Postfeminist Media And Neoliberalism (2016-2024), Lindsey A. Pritchard
Senior Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between TikTok's algorithmic design, women's identity construction, and the feminist historical context that shapes these constructions. In Chapter 1, "TikTok, Algorithmic Design, and Self-Making," I analyze how TikTok's algorithm functions and how these factors influence the curation and presentation of identity. This chapter establishes the foundational understanding of TikTok as a platform where identity performance is deeply intertwined with algorithmic design.
Chapter 2, "TikTok Feminism and Identity Commodification" examines the commodification of women's identities on the platform. It investigates the historical context of feminism and its evolution into postfeminism, analyzing how these narratives have been …

The Tragedy Of Our Trajectory, Marisola Xhelili Ciaccio
The Tragedy Of Our Trajectory, Marisola Xhelili Ciaccio
Dissertations (1934 -)
In this project, I argue that the trajectory of Western European civilization has resulted in increasingly tragic predicaments that are not to be taken as given features of being human. Though both Ancient Western and Eastern wisdom traditions concur that suffering is a part of life, the point of living is not to suffer but to learn to overcome it and flourish. But because the purported successes of Western “progress” necessarily depend on structural oppression, and oppression produces superfluous sufferings that interfere with our capacities to actualize our freedom and flourish, they ultimately make us all worse-off. Reflecting on such …

Entwined Derelict, Alex Teeple
Harrisburg University Other Works
"Entwined Derelict" was my first delve into the Twine interactive fiction engine, and the second game that I consider "feature complete". While a significant focus was put on learning the engine as a whole, particular effort for me was put into a sidebar "journal" of sorts, that took narrative flags from the game and recorded the events in a way that allows players to read back what they have experienced in-game at their leisure. While I greatly enjoyed making the game, and I do consider it a complete experience with some unique pieces within, it is a short adventure without …

Capstone Projects
The capstone project, Monuments and Memorials on Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland AFB, seeks to document and analyze the monuments and memorials that honor the legacy, achievements, and sacrifices of the U.S. Air Force community. Lackland Air Force Base, a cornerstone of military training and history, holds an array of memorials that capture the essence of military service, from historical milestones to individual acts of valor. This project aims to create a comprehensive resource that not only preserves the history represented by each monument but also serves as an interpretive guide for future generations. The decision to focus on these …

Public History In The Middle School Classroom, Victoria L. Sanchez
Capstone Projects
This project was inspired by my own experience as a middle school classroom teacher and seeks to highlight the crossover between public history pedagogies and middle school social studies instruction. The project’s main focus lies on providing social studies educators with resources to learn about, teach, and integrate classroom projects that draw on public history pedagogies and methods. I created the public PHxMS website to achieve this goal. The intended impact of this site, upon being shared with educators, is to increase awareness about and interest in the field of public history, provide a resource for educators who might be …

Maria also shared her thoughts on the decision-making process and the future of the COPS/Metro.
Securing Memorization In Piano Performance With Continuous Audiation, Jie He
Securing Memorization In Piano Performance With Continuous Audiation, Jie He
Theses and Dissertations
The study explores how incorporating continuous audiation, a concept introduced by pianist and educator Sarah Croom-Hatch, can be used as a strategy to improve pianists’ music memorization abilities and relief performance-related stress. The study presents a four-stage memorization process that emphasizes preparation, early, middle, and late stages. By integrating aural, kinesthetic, analytical, and visual memory with continuous audiation during the four-stage memorization process, pianists can develop a cohesive and secure “sound stream” that significantly enhances their memory system. The study provides practical guidance for systematically developing continuous audiation within daily practice routines to enhance memorization skills and achieve successful piano …

From Colonial Frontier To A Slave Society: "Second Slavery" And The Former Backcountry Of South Carolina In The Early Republic, 1780-1833, Elisabeth Zoe Horecny
Theses and Dissertations
Although the South Carolina backcountry was labeled pre-modern by contemporaries and, later, by some historians, it was the model of a modern, “second slavery” in the Atlantic World as evidenced by cultural, economic, and political changes there to accommodate and promote the expansion of slavery. The former backcountry was exemplarily of “second slavery” because the region modernized to create a slave society, instead of modifying the existing colonial system of mass enslavement in the region. Enslaved people responded to these changes in the former backcountry by spreading their oral traditions in healing and religion, maintaining African traditions, and creating communities …
