From Theory To Screen: Strain In The Gallagher Experience, Caroline H. Peabody Oct 2024

From Theory To Screen: Strain In The Gallagher Experience, Caroline H. Peabody

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper applies Agnew’s General Strain Theory to the hit television series Shameless (US), primarily focusing on three of the show’s central characters. The paper argues that the characters’ criminal and deviant actions can be attributed to strain, as defined by Robert Agnew’s General Strain Theory (GST). The paper provides a basic overview of GST as well as a synopsis of the show before implementing the theory into an analysis of the show. In addition, this paper explores how criminality highlights the themes of Shameless and acts as an implicit call to action to address strain variables in underprivileged communities. …

Empowering Students Is “Perfectly Normal:" The Case For 𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 In Middle Schools, Caroline H. Peabody

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

In September of 2023, a middle school teacher wrote an open letter to the Lexington County, Virginia school board expressing outrage over the “graphic sexual content” included in the county middle school’s library. Swiftly following the letter, the school board removed two books from the county’s Lylburn Middle School library without due process and avowed to reconsider the guidelines for including books in the library. One of the two books in question was It’s Perfectly Normal, a non-fiction illustrated book intended to educate readers ten and up on sex, intercourse, and puberty. It’s Perfectly Normal and should be available …

Holistic Methodologies For Fusing The Material And The Ideological: Tracing The Sociotechnical Imaginaries That Enable The World’S Fastest Supercomputer, Sarah Read, Jordan Firth Oct 2024

Holistic Methodologies For Fusing The Material And The Ideological: Tracing The Sociotechnical Imaginaries That Enable The World’S Fastest Supercomputer, Sarah Read, Jordan Firth

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

When the Aurora supercomputer launches at Argonne National Laboratory it will operate at the exascale and be one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. We have been invited by Argonne to do field work to understand both the day-to-day processes that maintain supercomputing (e.g. user documentation, government reporting, user testing) and the sociotechnical national imaginaries [11], –in particular the increasingly tense global competition between the US and China in the supercomputing race–that shaped the development of Aurora. This article proposes our work-in-progress methodological approach that accounts for both higher-level imaginaries and the everyday practices of supercomputing. We also describe …

Devices And Dining: A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Mobile Device Use In Italian And American Restaurants, O'Malley Jenkins Oct 2024

Devices And Dining: A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Mobile Device Use In Italian And American Restaurants, O'Malley Jenkins

Senior Theses

The field of technology ethics has seen increasing growth and interest over the years. Many have begun to consider the impacts of technology’s use and whether it is being employed in a healthy manner by users. However, there has been limited investigation into whether the ways in which technology use varies across cultures. This study begins to address this gap by researching Italian and American device usage in fast food settings. Non-participant naturalistic observations were used to record data for 89 Italian and 88 American customers of fast food restaurants. Analysis of the collected data indicates that Americans use their …

A Historical Analysis Of Infant Mortality In South Carolina From 1920-1970, Allison Ritchie Oct 2024

A Historical Analysis Of Infant Mortality In South Carolina From 1920-1970, Allison Ritchie

Senior Theses

This study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to investigate racial and spatial inequalities in South Carolina infant mortality rates (IMR’s) between 1920-1970. In the 20th century, IMR’s declined throughout the United States, primarily due to economic growth, increased sanitation, and improved medical knowledge. Factors such as systemic racism and lack of healthcare access resulted in higher IMR’s for Black infants and infants living in rural areas. In 1920, South Carolina’s Black IMR was 1.5 times higher than the white IMR; by 1970 the difference expanded to 1.9, reflecting a 27% rise. The disparity between Black and white IMR’s increased in …

Following The Wounded Women In Isabela, Kaisa Aquino Oct 2024

Following The Wounded Women In Isabela, Kaisa Aquino

Fine Arts Department Faculty Publications

This article examines some elements in the crafting of my novel, Isabela (2024), particularly its novelistic formation, and its take on the emblematic figure of the wounded woman in war. I demonstrate what non-conventional stylistic and conceptual decisions give the story its syncretic mode of thought, as its trail shifts from city to barrio, one category of fiction to another, and one wounded woman to the next. I also argue that all these movements and turns are necessary in the novel’s project of representation, as it envisions to narrativize the ongoing historical moment that is the people’s struggle for liberation …

Salvation Through King Jesus In Zechariah 9:9-13, Mitch Mcgeath Oct 2024

Salvation Through King Jesus In Zechariah 9:9-13, Mitch Mcgeath

Biblical Studies Student Projects

Zechariah 9:9-13 is a prophecy of radical hope given to Israel in utter despair. In this passage, the Lord reveals through Zechariah the counter-cultural nature of his humble king, his Davidic Messiah. This paper explores how contemporary believers can apply a kingdom of God lens to Christocentric fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9-13. In turn, we may gain deeper appreciation for the foreknowledge of God and the future hope of the church's deliverance from the evil one, sin, and oppression.

How Biblical Theology Supports Jesus’S Teaching On Food Cleanliness, Mitch Mcgeath Oct 2024

How Biblical Theology Supports Jesus’S Teaching On Food Cleanliness, Mitch Mcgeath

Biblical Studies Student Projects

This paper uses a framework of biblical theology to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus's teaching on food cleanliness in Mark 7:14-23. Using the framework of levitical law, including God's original intent for the law as a compass pointing towards moral purity, Jesus redefines the law in himself, thus fulfilling it in full and abrogating it in part.

On Province And Empire In My Ántonia And One Of Ours: Cather’S 1922 The Waste Land, Paul A. Olson Oct 2024

On Province And Empire In My Ántonia And One Of Ours: Cather’S 1922 The Waste Land, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Willa Cather profoundly alters her attitude towards the American experiment, World War I, and the prospect of cultural pluralism in America between her 1918 My Antonia and her 1922 One of Ours. In doing so, she addresses the issue of what kind of culture America should have: a monistic one such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson advocated or a pluralistic one. In My Antonia, set during the period of Great Plains settlement but extending up into World War I, she presents an intact American cultural pluralism: non-English speaking European cultures continuing their positive practices absent the monarchic repression …

Professional Mourning: Billie Holiday’S “Strange Fruit” And The Remaking Of Black Consciousness, Samuel Galen Ng Oct 2024

Professional Mourning: Billie Holiday’S “Strange Fruit” And The Remaking Of Black Consciousness, Samuel Galen Ng

Africana Studies: Faculty Publications

This article examines the impact that Billie Holiday’s singing of “Strange Fruit” had on African American audiences from 1939 until Holiday’s death in 1959. It argues that Holiday’s performances embodied and induced a state of collective mourning by way of their politically strategic efforts to frame Black existence as a site of ongoing endangerment and corresponding fear. With carefully crafted, professional expertise, Holiday’s singing generated a feeling of shared vulnerability among her Black audiences and, furthermore, presented that feeling as the very foundation of Black being. Effecting its intended political work, her singing thus prompted some of these listeners to …

Measuring Religious Evil: Examining The Use Of Single-Item Measures In Religious Research, Tom Clark, Scott A. Desmond, Christoper D. Bader Oct 2024

Measuring Religious Evil: Examining The Use Of Single-Item Measures In Religious Research, Tom Clark, Scott A. Desmond, Christoper D. Bader

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Multiple-item indexes are ubiquitous within the sociology of religion. However, there are a growing number of articles in other disciplines that have advocated the use of single-item measures in specific circumstances. Using quantitative survey data taken from the United Kingdom, this paper contributes to this literature by exploring the impact of single and multiple item measures of religious evil on a series of social and political attitudes. The findings suggest that belief in the devil is the most consistent predictor within a multiple-item measure of religious evil and the multiple-item measure does not significantly outperform single-item measures. Indeed, the item …

Cultural Perspectives On Psychoactive Substances: A Study Of Psilocybin In Indonesia, Parmis Mazdeh Oct 2024

Cultural Perspectives On Psychoactive Substances: A Study Of Psilocybin In Indonesia, Parmis Mazdeh

Indonesia: Arts, Religion, and Social Change

This study examines the various cultural views on psilocybin in Indonesia, emphasizing its role in religious, spiritual, and cultural contexts. It investigates both the historical and present-day use of psychoactive substances, specifically psilocybin, in connecting with the divine, attaining transcendental enlightenment, and shaping identity within specific civilizations. Although psilocybin is illegal in Indonesia, these mushrooms can be found in the Gili Islands, raising questions about how they fit into local spiritual traditions and the legal loopholes that allow their use. Field research in the Gili Islands reveals how religious beliefs and practices influence the cultural acceptance of magic mushrooms, while …

South Africa: Multiculturalism and Human Rights

This research paper examines the role of religion in fostering community cohesion, cultural preservation, and governance in Pniël, a small South African town with deep historical and religious roots. Drawing on interviews with community members, it explores how religious practices and spaces function as mechanisms for maintaining collective identity, transmitting values across generations, and addressing social challenges like modernization and gentrification. The study highlights the interplay between tradition and change, emphasizing the importance of preserving religious heritage and cultural narratives in a secularizing world. It also discusses the implications of these findings for safeguarding the histories and identities of small …

The Evolution Of The Translations Of Virgil’S “The Aeneid”: An Analytical Comparison Of Robert Faglesand John Dryden's Translations Using Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Eric Zhang, Katherine Elkins Oct 2024

The Evolution Of The Translations Of Virgil’S “The Aeneid”: An Analytical Comparison Of Robert Faglesand John Dryden's Translations Using Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Eric Zhang, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

This research poster aims to explore two English translations of the ancient Roman epic “The Aeneid” written by the poet Virgil. The two versions that were chosen for analysis are John Dryden’s translation from 1697 compared with Robert Fagles’ translation from 2006. This poster seeks to use sentiment analysis and word frequency analysis tools to analytically compare the two versions of the epic. From the results, the older translation appeared to use more formal wording and “dramatic” storytelling structures compared to a more “accurate” rendition of the epic translated using modern language. The sentiment analysis result also demonstrates greater sentiment …

Ai On The Air: Analyzing Ai Sentiment In Us News Reporting, Gwen Eisenbeis, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

This project examines sentiment surrounding mentions of artificial intelligence within news broadcasts of the three most prominent American news channels: FOX, CNN, and CNBC. Sentiment analysis was conducted on closed captioning data from news clips that mentioned “artificial intelligence” for each of the news channels from 2012 to 2024. This project seeks to evaluate sentiment as mentions of artificial intelligence increase and compare the respective sentiment for each news channel. While clear sentiment differences from the beginning of the time period to the end could not be determined, there was a difference in the overall sentiment trends for each news …

What Makes An Emotionally Compelling Novel? A Sentiment Analysis Of Science Fiction Novels 1984 And We, Annalia Fiore, Katherine Elkins Oct 2024

What Makes An Emotionally Compelling Novel? A Sentiment Analysis Of Science Fiction Novels 1984 And We, Annalia Fiore, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

The purpose of this project is to compare the Soviet novel We by Yevgeny Zamyatin (1924) to the English novel 1984 by George Orwell (1949). Many have previously drawn comparisons between the two works, but the focus of this research is to find dissimilarities in their respective emotional arcs using sentiment analysis, a computational tool used for processing large bodies of text. The findings of this research were twofold. Firstly, the novel We suffers from an undeveloped emotional arc due to a weak narrative voice and a lack of emotionally varied events. This is especially notable when compared to 1984, …
