Poetry For The Lord Instead Of The World: A Study Of The Romantic Poets, The Imposters, And Our Response As Christians, Annabelle Camoirano
Masters Theses
When I was a little girl, I watched my grandfather read all the time. He had shelves full of books stacked on more books. My grandparents had an entire room dedicated to holding the books he’d read over the years. Almost 5 years ago now, we had to move my grandparents out of the home that they had lived in for over 40 years. Going through all those books, my dad found one he knew I had to have. I have always loved collecting old books, and one of my favorite older poets is Edgar Allen Poe. My dad found …
Moral Injury In Military Corrections, Jeremy Ryder Meyers
Moral Injury In Military Corrections, Jeremy Ryder Meyers
Masters Theses
Over the past thirty years moral injury has been a topic of concern regarding the behavioral and spiritual health of military members. Part of that work has given a voice to Vietnam veterans and the events they faced while in combat. Some of these events were acts of betrayal at the hands of another military member or their own. This act led to an injury to their moral code. Military chaplains may have morally injured soldiers in need of pastoral care as they serve. This includes soldiers working the military prisons like the United States Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth. …

The Lived Experience Of African American Female Veterans With Mental Health Service Utilization Following Active Duty Discharge, Martha Woodley
The Lived Experience Of African American Female Veterans With Mental Health Service Utilization Following Active Duty Discharge, Martha Woodley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although extensive research has explored mental health, transitional barriers, and trauma-related experiences of women veterans, little research has focused on the utilization of mental health services by African American female veterans following active duty discharge. Minority female veterans tend to face gender treatment differences and racial biases, encounter trauma-related stressors, and experience the societal absence of military cultural competency when transitioning from active duty. The overall purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of African American female veterans with mental health service utilization following active duty discharge. A phenomenological research design was used to explore the experiences …
The Need For Accurate [And Respectful] Depictions Of Mental Illness In Fiction, Jacequlyn L. Mills
The Need For Accurate [And Respectful] Depictions Of Mental Illness In Fiction, Jacequlyn L. Mills
Masters Theses
This thesis seeks to address the ongoing misrepresentation of mental illness in popular media, specifically within film, television, and literature. The power of the media is instrumental in public perception, and the ongoing negative misinformation and inaccuracy of mental illness those who are affected by it in media is instrumental in spreading harmful stereotypes and stigma. This affects not only the way that the general public views mental illness but also the way those with mental illness view themselves as well as their desire to seek help. I use these forms of media to showcase both the negative and positive …
An Interpretation Of Isaiah 7:14 Based On The Birth Motif, Younggwang Kim
An Interpretation Of Isaiah 7:14 Based On The Birth Motif, Younggwang Kim
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Isaiah 7:14 is a well-known verse but is interpreted differently by scholars. The verse can be understood based on the Christological emphasis or can be read based on the historical-contextual emphasis. The dualistic reading is also divided into the embedded Christological meaning and the non-embedded Christological meaning. This research provides a more concrete explanation model to read the multi-layered implications of Isaiah 7:14, which is the birth motif approach. The birth motif is a longitudinal theme with a redemptive-historical stance. From Genesis 3:15 to Adamic-Abrahamic descendants, the Scripture has formed a certain motif of birth that has theological implications by …

An Exploration Into The Social And Emotional Effects Of K-12 Music Education, Jerrod T. Perry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In music education, a student must learn to read music notation, develop eye-hand-mind coordination, develop keen listening skills, develop team skills for playing in an ensemble, and develop the discipline to practice. Several research findings show that musical training is a powerful intervention that could help students emotionally and intellectually mature. This research aims to connect the current research on music education with the lack of exploration and knowledge to find the correlation between music and students’ academic success. The methodology used for this study will be a quantitative historical study format directed to discover research-backed evidence based on this …
The Shared Experiences Of The Effectiveness Of Christian Mindfulness Meditation For Adult Evangelical Christians In Florida Experiencing Ptsd Symptomatology, Loraine Yvonne Pennant
The Shared Experiences Of The Effectiveness Of Christian Mindfulness Meditation For Adult Evangelical Christians In Florida Experiencing Ptsd Symptomatology, Loraine Yvonne Pennant
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Mindfulness meditation, though secular in origin, is a distinct Christian principle found in the Bible and are practices that Christians in general subconsciously subscribe to especially in times of traumatic stress. When adapted to reflect Christian principles, this practice should retain the basic concepts of mindfulness meditation while safeguarding the integrity of the biblical tenet. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand and describe the shared experiences of the effectiveness of Christian mindfulness meditation of adult evangelical Christians in Florida suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder symptomology. A gap in literature exploring the topics of Christian rumination (meditation) and …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Modern-day Israel’s history includes countless examples of conflict, courage, endurance, and victory. The reconstitution of the Jewish nation in the Holy Land had no guarantee or certainty of success. In May 1948, five openly hostile Arab nations stood ready to invade Israel. This dissertation breaks down how by an incredible turn of events that includes a critical group of American Zionists and volunteer Haganah members, the fledgling Jewish nation was able to defend its land and people. A vital component to the strength and endurance of the Jewish people and the Haganah, a defensive force, was made possible because of …

Dyslexia And Sight-Reading: Perceptions Of Upper Woodwind Instrumental Students With Dyslexia And Their Approach To Sight-Reading Study, Kristen S. Spiridon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological research study examines the sight-reading abilities and perceptions of eight to ten high school, dyslexic, upper woodwind students from locations in the United States. The study involves students sight-reading an etude that participants had not seen previously. Though studies featuring note reading and dyslexic students are well documented, the literature has not fully addressed this phenomenon among high-school-aged students and upper woodwind students, who regularly encounter the most technically challenging rhythmic figures. The study includes eight to ten dyslexic upper woodwind high school students sightreading the etude and observing their execution. Each student completed a survey …
When Obedience Becomes A Sacrifice: Creating And Sustaining Resilient Leaders, Janet G. Wooten
When Obedience Becomes A Sacrifice: Creating And Sustaining Resilient Leaders, Janet G. Wooten
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This thesis, “When Obedience Becomes a Sacrifice,” discusses the role of sacrifice in obeying God's call to lead. The lay leaders of Call to Conquer Ministries do not seem to understand this role, leading to ministry challenges. This research aims to provide a deeper understanding of the role of sacrifice in leadership and how to maintain resiliency during difficult times. Potential leaders answer God’s call to lead, believing that “obedience is better than sacrifice" (1 Samuel 15:22a). However, there is a lack of full clarity concerning the sacrifices made because of their obedience. The question to be addressed is “What …

Developing A Biblical Worldview: Equipping African American Leaders With The Tools Needed To Combat The Reemergence Of Syncretism Within The African American Church, William Taft Wallace Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Historically, African Americans have grappled with questions of identity, a struggle initially precipitated by the diaspora. Over time, this ongoing struggle has led many to seek answers from various sources, each of which has influenced and shaped their worldview. In response to this ongoing identity crisis, the African American church has traditionally served as a stabilizing force, emphasizing that identity is rooted in the image of God, as affirmed by the Bible. However, today’s African American church faces significant insider threats from other African American-based groups that promote counter-biblical and anti-Christian narratives regarding identity. These threats have infiltrated the church, …
Providing A Paradigm Of Pastoral Care For The Marginalized Through Jesus Centered Eyes At Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church, Dawn E. Pratt
Providing A Paradigm Of Pastoral Care For The Marginalized Through Jesus Centered Eyes At Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church, Dawn E. Pratt
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This project outlines a paradigm of pastoral care for the marginalized through Jesus-centered eyes. Enhancing resources and implementing pastoral care within Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church (CCF) will establish a Jesus-centered pastoral care center while developing a more profound theological paradigm to identify and implement strategies to enhance pastoral care in marginalized communities. CCF's pastoral theological approach to empathy requires that many layers of different circumstances be inquired about while keeping close to the subject or individual in need. CCF is the vehicle that has established a transformational view through the eyes of Jesus at the center. A solid literature review …

A Biblically Faithful Participation In The Lord’S Supper Following The Model Of Justin Martyr, Joshua Michael Wallnofer
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This action research thesis project examines a historical, biblical approach to the Lord’s Supper, focusing on chapters 65-67 of the First Apology of the second-century church father, Justin Martyr. The research investigated five themes emphasized by Justin. These crucial subjects include defining those who are the rightful participants in the Lord’s Supper, what spiritual nourishment is found at the communion table, the importance of the regular receiving of the Lord’s Table, the communal nature of the communion meal, and how the church can provide ministry to those absent from worship with the ordinance. The project implemented a six-week small group …
Worship In Life, Worship In Death: Elements Of Worship In A Believer’S Final Days, James William Lawrence
Worship In Life, Worship In Death: Elements Of Worship In A Believer’S Final Days, James William Lawrence
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In Isaiah 43:21 (English Standard Version), God declares through his prophet that he created humankind for himself, for them to declare his praises. God created humanity to worship. In the last phase of a believer's life, there is a possibility of not being able to join the rest of the church in corporate worship. This text addresses the question: How does assisting shut-in Protestant Christians with end-of-life worship impact the patient, family, and the concept of dying well? Pastors, chaplains, and ministers from many walks of life have recorded and underlined the importance of worshipful pastoral care in the latter …
Using Situational Leadership To Disciple And Develop Men For Spiritual Leadership In The Home, Christopher N. Andrews
Using Situational Leadership To Disciple And Develop Men For Spiritual Leadership In The Home, Christopher N. Andrews
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
God has designed the family to be the primary source of faith and spiritual formation, commanding all parents to pass along the faith and teach the commandments to their children. Scripture teaches that men hold a special role as the spiritual leader of the home. For men to fulfil this God appointed role they need to be trained and mentored. At the time of this research there was no formal ministry dedicated to the spiritual development of men at FBC Brandenburg. The purpose of this research was to test the Situational Leadership Model in a discipleship program designed to train …

Good Samaritans: Applications Of Social Christianity By Southern Baptists During The Early Twentieth Century, Alyson Marie Fagan
Good Samaritans: Applications Of Social Christianity By Southern Baptists During The Early Twentieth Century, Alyson Marie Fagan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In the early twentieth century, the Social Gospel movement sought to spur Christians to serve their neighbors through social and political reform, often through ecumenical groups. However, Southern Baptists remained distant from this movement because they were weary of the liberal Christianity expressed by Social Gospel leaders that appeared to replace the power of the Gospel with acts of service. Instead, the Southern Baptist Convention formally addressed social reforms and civic engagement by creating the Social Service Commission and Committee on Civic Righteousness. These groups expressed the need to reform the home and advocated civic engagement while remaining true to …
Conforming To The Image Of Christ: Addressing Spiritual Immaturity Utilizing Strategic Bible-Based Pastoral Counseling In A Rural Church Context, Leonard Carpenter Iii
Conforming To The Image Of Christ: Addressing Spiritual Immaturity Utilizing Strategic Bible-Based Pastoral Counseling In A Rural Church Context, Leonard Carpenter Iii
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Strong and healthy churches are made up of strong and healthy disciples. The ministry context for this qualitative action research project was the Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church, a predominately Black congregation located in the Pea Ridge community of Brewton, Alabama. The problem was some members at Saint Mark engaged in spiritually immature actions that evoked immature reactions which yielded unhealthy relationships. To address the problem, the researcher developed and implemented the “Strategic Bible-Based Pastoral Counseling Program” (SBPCP), a strategic Christian ministry that provided participants one-on-one pastoral counseling opportunities for the purpose of building up spiritually healthier Christians. SBPCP consisted …

The Qualitative Study Of The African American Pastors' Perceptions Of Marriage And Family Therapists, De Angela Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study investigates African American pastors' perceptions regarding mental health practitioners' roles. The research aims to comprehend the perspectives and experiences of ten participants, allowing them to select the location for data collection. This study investigates the relationship between interpretive phenomenon analysis and the perceptions of African American pastors using the hermeneutic phenomenology framework established by influential thinkers such as Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Sartre (Smith et al., 2022). As a philosophical discipline, phenomenology emphasizes the importance of an individual's lived experiences and worldview. Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Sartre have contributed to this discipline by emphasizing the inseparable relationship …
The Moderate Use Of Wine And Alcohol Among Church Elders: An Analysis Of Νηφάλιον And Πάροινον In 1 Timothy 3:1-7 And Titus 1:5-9, Charles Douglas Tarver Miller
The Moderate Use Of Wine And Alcohol Among Church Elders: An Analysis Of Νηφάλιον And Πάροινον In 1 Timothy 3:1-7 And Titus 1:5-9, Charles Douglas Tarver Miller
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The use of alcohol in the Bible is well established. The ancients were known to consume alcohol and fully understood the pain and pleasure associated with it. So, two things are true: the use of wine is permitted in the Scriptures, but only in moderation. Historically, the conversation about the use of wine has focused on answering the question, “Was the wine used by believers in the Scriptures alcoholic or non-alcoholic?” That debate has largely been settled and will not be the subject of this dissertation. What has not been addressed nearly as often is the question, “How was wine …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the integration of the diffusion of innovation through core skills, information, and technology used in newsroom operations. The problem was the lack of understanding of the policies and procedures in TV newsrooms and the skills needed to succeed in the field. Studies conducted in the past twenty to forty years in the United States examine the work routines and skills of employees. Since then, innovation and technology has transformed the way the news industry works from the collection of information to how news is disseminated to audiences on-air and online. …
Essential Groaning: The Resurrection Hope Of Romans 8:18-25 And 2 Corinthians 4:7-5:10 Against Word Of Faith Theology, Samuel Arthur Knaus
Essential Groaning: The Resurrection Hope Of Romans 8:18-25 And 2 Corinthians 4:7-5:10 Against Word Of Faith Theology, Samuel Arthur Knaus
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Word of Faith theology affirms that God wants to bless all who agree with him with health, wealth, and prosperity in this life. The movement admonishes its followers to seek these gifts from God for a life of material goods, ease, and comfort here and now. However, a look at the lifestyles of faithful saints throughout redemptive history demonstrates that the clear majority did not receive health, wealth, and prosperity in this life. Scripture affirms that believers should not love the world or the things in it (1 John 2:15) but instead, seek prosperity in the life to come. This …

Politics And The Catholic Church: The Rise Of Communism, The Modernization Of The Church, And American Involvement In Early Cold War Italy, Victoria L. Bolds
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Catholic Church stands as a testament to the strength of Christianity and diplomacy in an age of modernity. The Vatican, however, has struggled in recent history to live up to its moral code and has taken a more political leaning. Between 1943 and 1965, this adaptation or struggle against modern adaptation is clearly seen. It is necessary to understand the development of post-war Europe at a time when its political, economic, and spiritual leanings could have swayed toward communism, especially as it was a prominent political group in Italy at the time. How then, did Italy evade the progressive …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Churches and faith-based organizations may discover their role in fulfilling the Great Commission seems to be overshadowed by their efforts to provide other forms of relief and support. Central Florida, like many different regions in the United States, is facing an epidemic of homelessness and addiction. Natural and manmade disasters also present urgent and existential threats. The researcher believes that building true and lasting hope in Jesus is key to facing these challenges in the long term. He hypothesized that intractable barriers may create hopelessness and shift the focus of ministry away from inspiring hope. He conducted purposive interviews and …

This action research project addresses spiritual growth anxiety within BrandofMan Ministries by helping members better understand their covenant union with Christ. The goal was to use this understanding to promote grace-based spiritual growth through positional righteousness. The project involved analyzing existing literature and integrating theological and theoretical concepts to develop a teaching method that effectively addresses anxiety linked to spiritual development. The project measured the participants’ prior knowledge and application of spiritual growth through a covenant union with Christ and how a systematic curriculum on the topic could be used to enhance their knowledge, improve application, and reduce anxiety. Communism And Socialism: Their Influences On Wisconsin's Political, Economic, And Cultural Foundations, With A Special Focus On Milwaukee, 1890-1950, Jean Marie Froelich
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In the United States of America, both Socialism and Communism were present without the volatility of what occurred in the Soviet Union, China, and other nations. Wisconsin and many other states had a powerful Communist and Socialist framework. Wisconsin also had other parties like the Progressives, Populists, and Greenbacks, though not as significant as the main ones. Many Wisconsin leaders were willing participants in exercising these ideologies on their constituents. Immigrants played a crucial role in shaping the political system based on what they had learned in their native countries and social, cultural, and economic inputs. Milwaukee was a vital …

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Here I synthesize two research investigations (Callahan, 2018, 2019) that comprise a continuing line of inquiry into the potential of innovative curriculum materials and sustained collaboration as a professional development program to help in-service teachers understand and implement a complex model of social studies instruction. This article features an original innovative curriculum material and specifically explores the question: To what degree can a collaborative professional development program featuring innovative curriculum materials help social studies teachers understand and implement a powerful social studies approach? Findings suggest the professional development program and its innovative curriculum materials helped teachers promote substantive pedagogical thinking …
