Painting In Indigo To See Freedom, Rochelle D. Johnson
Painting In Indigo To See Freedom, Rochelle D. Johnson
Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts
This thesis explores my artistic journey of creating work that centers on personal identity and the complexities of history and representation. Through research and creative practice, I have moved away from making art for an external viewer, turning to a deeper internal exploration of my lived experiences. Focusing on the color indigo as a personal and historical symbol, I challenge conventional portrayals of race in art, particularly those rooted in Western ideals. By reflecting on modernism, the human figure, portraiture, and the use of color, I articulate how my art dialogues with history while expressing the freedom to define my …

Persecuted Or Protected: The Role Of Iranian Baha'is In The International Community, Nika Mazloom
Persecuted Or Protected: The Role Of Iranian Baha'is In The International Community, Nika Mazloom
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Religious persecution is, and always has been, rampant, and this is especially the case for the Baha’is in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Yet, little research has been done on how this persecution has led to improvements in protections for different religious minorities, including the Baha’i Faith. This thesis will aim to address that gap and understand whether and how the persecution of Iranian Baha’is advances protections for different religious minorities. In this research I attempt to locate instances of Baha’i persecution-informed religious protection through extensive research of the Baha’i International Community and interviews of religious persecution experts to understand …

Kennesaw State University Libraries Celebrate Constitution Week, Courtney Gardner

During Constitution Week, Kennesaw State University Libraries organized a series of engaging events from September 16 to 20. The festivities kicked off with a faculty panel discussing the 25th Amendment and presidential succession, featuring insights from political science faculty. Voter registration events were held on both Kennesaw and Marietta campuses, allowing students to register, check their status, and interact with historical figures, and most importantly a therapy dog and library mascot, Summer the Corgi. A highlight of the week was the unveiling of a rare 1840s facsimile of the Declaration of Independence, accompanied by the launch of the exhibition "We …

Allusive Allusions, Daniel T. Hanson
Allusive Allusions, Daniel T. Hanson
Theology Undergraduate Work
This paper attempts to determine whether David or his editor in 1 Sam 24:11b–12a is alluding to the judge Jephtha in Judg 11:27, and if so, what implications this intertextual allusion would have on both diachronic and synchronic studies. To accomplish this goal, the author utilizes four of the criteria proposed by Richard B. Hays in Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul—namely, the criteria of verbal parallel, availability of source to the author (date), theme, and recurrence of author to the same section. The author examines the degree of verbal parallel in light of the hermeneutical structuring principle …
Championing Food Studies Within The Field Of Irish Studies: A Serendipitous Autoethnographic Journey, Mairtin Macconiomaire
Championing Food Studies Within The Field Of Irish Studies: A Serendipitous Autoethnographic Journey, Mairtin Macconiomaire
Doctoral
Food permeates every aspect of life and society, from birth to death—from the new-born’s first suckle to the food traditions associated with Irish wakes and funerals. Essential for survival, it has historically proven academically elusive, hidden in plain sight. Entangled with the domestic and the feminine, it was traditionally regarded as too mundane and too quotidian for consideration. Depending on how you define it, Irish Studies has somewhere between 50 and 100 years of history as an academic discipline. Food Studies is a more recent academic phenomenon, which has been steadily growing internationally since last decade of the twentieth century. …
A Comparative Study Of Weavings Of Two Disparate Cultures: Finding The Similarities In Handcrafts, Monica Lowe
A Comparative Study Of Weavings Of Two Disparate Cultures: Finding The Similarities In Handcrafts, Monica Lowe
Theses
This thesis is a study of the similarities between the traditional weavings of two indigenous cultures who appear to be culturally unrelated, the West African Ewe and the Peruvian Quechua located in the Cusco Province. Its purview includes the purpose it serves, who does the craft, and meanings woven into the textiles. The focus of this thesis is based on a theory that across human cultures, iconographies and archetypes are demonstratively the same, with similar collective, unconscious meanings. The overall theory is that handcrafts are an important consideration when demonstrating a reflection of human cultural similarities in beliefs, community, and …

Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Maude Valérie White (1866-1937) was an English composer during the Victorian Era. Her main output was in the genre of art song, of which she wrote more than two hundred during her life. Her music was very popular at the height of her career around 1880-1890, but fell out of favor with the general public in line with the general reaction against Victorian art and ideals. This written document focuses on the life of Maude Valérie White contextualized within the ideals of Victorian womanhood. It will explore the development of her musical style through eight song analyses: The Devout Lover, …
