Since the founding of their denomination, Seventh-day Adventists have advocated a particular concept of health based on the visions and writings of denominational co-founder Ellen G. White (1827–1915). According to her writings, certain natural laws are crucial for maintaining health. These laws are often called “the laws of health” or “the eight laws of health” and include principles such as diet, exercise, water, temperance, and hygiene. In Seventh-day Adventist circles, Ellen G. White is usually perceived as the originator of these health principles. Some scholars suggest that she simply borrowed her health principles from other contemporary health reformers. …

This January 2024 Master of Science in Psychology thesis at Lipscomb University looks at how previous research on deconversion from a Christian religious background to atheism indicates that individuals experience negative social consequences with family, friends, and community groups when they disclose that their beliefs have changed (Marriott, 2015); (Dollinger, 2018). Past research has shown that mothers are impacted by their emerging adult child’s deconversion (Marriott, 2015). Studies also indicate that parents who are extrinsically religious and less open to new experiences are more likely to dismiss their emerging adult child’s worldview (Marriott, 2015). This project examines the creation and renovation of Interstate 35 in Texas through the lens of cultural history and societal analysis. It begins with the highway’s formulation and predecessors, ending with the passage and immediate impact of NAFTA following over two decades of disillusionment. In this paper, the road is not solely viewed through the lens of state interests. Local and national concerns and powers balanced Texan interests in the course of the road’s creation and are therefore investigated in conversation with each other. The 19th century witnessed intensifying marine ecological disruptions by colonial, industrial, and imperial activities. Meanwhile, current scholarship acknowledges the significance of the 19th century in tracing the emergence of the “Anthropocene” – a loose shorthand for ecological damages that are planetary in scale. This thesis aims to analyze how gothic imagination of the marine space unravels the linkages between the two temporally intersecting phenomena. The neoliberal society we live in encourages a constant maximization of the “project of the self.” The tradition of Christian mysticism, centered on self-denial and passivity, provides an alternative understanding of the self. In this essay, I draw testimonial and theoretical accounts of mysticism from the autobiography of a 16th-century Spanish nun, Teresa of Ávila, and essays from a 20th-century French philosopher, Simone Weil. By bringing these two authors in conversation, I hope to illuminate three aspects of self-effacement in the Christian mystical tradition. Shakya Chokden’s approach consists of reducing all phenomena to mind and its appearances, and then negating dualistic minds as illusory and nonexistent and establishing the non-dual jñāna transcending them as the only phenomenon existent in reality—the primordial tathāgatagarbha with all buddha-qualities complete. For him, this interpretation of tathāgatagarbha is indispensable for tantric contemplative practice and for explaining how and why that practice works. How can we take transnationality as a space of in-betweenness to generate new possibilities, moving beyond geographically bounded spans between countries? This article presents five authors’ collective inquiry on transnational positionalities, which we practiced through the relational, transformative, and reflective writing of the self in a community space. We staged the collaborative writing into two processes: the emergent process of thematic writing and the relay writing. Imagery from fixed, ground-based cameras is rich in qualitative and quantitative information that can improve stream discharge monitoring. For instance, time-lapse imagery may be valuable for filling data gaps when sensors fail and/or during lapses in funding for monitoring programs. In this study, we used a large image archive (> 40,000 images from 2012 to 2019) from a fixed, ground-based camera that is part of a documentary watershed imaging project (https://plattebasintimelapse.com/). We make the case for building a permanent public-use platform for conducting and analyzing immersive interviews on the everyday lives of Americans. The American Voices Project (AVP)—a widely watched experiment with this new platform—provides important early evidence on its promise. The articles in this issue reveal that, although public-use interview datasets obviously cannot meet all research needs, they do provide new opportunities to study small or hidden populations, new or emerging social problems, reactions to ongoing social crises, submerged values and attitudes, and many other aspects of American life. This study explored access to and utilization of healthcare facilities among migrant women in an urban slum community in Nigeria, focusing on factors influencing healthcare-seeking behaviors and the implications for public health interventions. A qualitative case study-oriented research design was employed, involving in-depth interviews with 21 migrant women of reproductive age and 4 key informant interviews with healthcare workers in the Ayobo community of Lagos State, Nigeria. Data collection occurred from June to September 2018, and thematic analysis was used to interpret the findings. This thesis examines charity as a key element of early modern experience in the context of the Pizzicaiuoli altarpiece (1447). Painted by well-known artist Giovanni di Paolo, the altarpiece was commissioned by the Sienese guild of grocers, the Pizzicaiuoli, and was situated in the church of the Santissima Annunziata, located in the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. The central focus of the altarpiece is the main panel depicting the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Presentation), which is surrounded by iconic images of saints. St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney is considered to be the Mother Church of Australia. Yet, the rich architectural and artistic heritage contained therein has been little studied. This is an interdisciplinary study of John Hardman Powell’s Great North Window in that cathedral. It draws on theological and art historical research methods to interrogate the window’s underlying meanings, and the aims of its patrons. An examination of the doctrinal, devotional, and theological writings of the nineteenth century shows that this stained-glass window reflects the period’s understanding of salvation history. The focus of this research is the use of the female body as a tool for developing a feminist performance practice. This research interrogated the use of neo-burlesque and erotic dance in contemporary postdramatic performance. วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งศึกษาวรรณกรรมเพื่อสอนสตรีในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ในประเด็นรูปแบบ แนวคิด และความสัมพันธ์กับสังคมสยามสมัยใหม่ กลุ่มข้อมูลที่นำมาศึกษา คืองานเขียนที่แต่งขึ้นเพื่อบำรุงจรรยาและบำรุงปัญญาสตรีที่พิมพ์เผยแพร่ในสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์สมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ทั้งร้อยแก้วและร้อยกรองผลการศึกษาพบว่า วรรณกรรมเพื่อสอนสตรีในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 สร้างขึ้นในบริบทของวัฒนธรรมหนังสือ อันเป็นการสั่งสมและสืบทอดความรู้ผ่านหนังสือในสังคมสมัยใหม่ รูปแบบที่เด่นที่สุดของวรรณกรรมกลุ่มนี้ คือสารคดี ร้อยแก้วแบบใหม่ซึ่งมีกลวิธีการสอนหลากหลายที่มุ่งสร้างความเข้าใจสาระคำสอน และสร้างความน่าสนใจให้แก่ผู้อ่าน ในช่วงเวลาที่สื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ต่าง ๆ กำลังทวีความสำคัญ ส่วนเรื่องแนวคิดพบว่า วรรณกรรมกลุ่มนี้เสนอทั้งแนวคิดที่สืบทอด มาจากวรรณกรรมคำสอนสตรีแนวขนบ ได้แก่ แนวคิดเรื่องกุลสตรี แนวคิดเรื่องแม่ศรีเรือน และแนวคิดเรื่องศรีภรรยา และพัฒนาแนวคิดขึ้นใหม่ ได้แก่ แนวคิดเรื่องแม่เรือนสมัยใหม่ แนวคิดเรื่องสตรีมีส่วนร่วมในการปฏิรูปประเทศด้วยการพัฒนาตนเองให้เป็นพลเมืองที่มีคุณภาพ และแนวคิดเรื่องสตรีเป็นเครื่องแสดงความเจริญของบ้านเมืองวรรณกรรมเพื่อสอนสตรีกับสังคมสยามสมัยใหม่มีอิทธิพลต่อกัน กล่าวคือ การปฏิรูปประเทศให้ทันสมัยและการรับอิทธิพลจากวรรณกรรมและวัฒนธรรมตะวันตก ส่งผลให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงค่านิยมบางประการที่มีต่อสตรี ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 จึงมีการสร้างและถ่ายทอดวรรณกรรมเพื่อสอนสตรีในสิ่งพิมพ์อย่างแพร่หลายเพื่อแสดงค่านิยมใหม่ ทำให้วรรณกรรมแนวนี้ขยายตัว มีทั้งงานเขียนที่ยังคงรูปแบบและแนวคิดตามขนบเดิม และงานเขียนที่พัฒนารูปแบบและแนวคิดขึ้นใหม่ให้สอดคล้องกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสังคม ขณะเดียวกัน วรรณกรรมเพื่อสอนสตรีก็มีบทบาทต่อสังคมสยามสมัยใหม่ในหลายมิติ ทั้งบทบาทในการชี้แนะสตรีให้ครองตนได้อย่างเหมาะสม บทบาทในการสร้างและสั่งสม ทุนทางวัฒนธรรมของชนชั้นนำ และบทบาทในการยกระดับศักยภาพสตรี จึงกล่าวได้ว่า วรรณกรรมเพื่อสอนสตรีในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 เป็นผลผลิตทางปัญญาที่มีคุณค่าและความสำคัญ โดยเฉพาะช่วยขยายองค์ความรู้เกี่ยวกับพัฒนาการของวรรณกรรมคำสอนสตรีในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ และเป็นหลักฐานร่วมสมัยที่แสดงให้เห็นความสำคัญของสตรีในบริบทแห่งการพัฒนาบ้านเมืองให้มีอารยะ

รายการโหนกระแสเป็นรายการสัมภาษณ์ที่ได้รับความสนใจจากประชาชนอย่างกว้างขวาง เนื่องจากมีการเชิญบุคคลหรือกลุ่มบุคคลที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประเด็นหรือเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในสังคมแล้วเป็นกระแส รวมถึงบุคคลที่ได้รับความเดือดร้อนและต้องการความช่วยเหลือในประเด็นต่าง ๆ มานั่งเป็นผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์ งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาองค์ประกอบของการสื่อสารในปริจเฉทการสัมภาษณ์รายการโหนกระแสตามแนวชาติพันธุ์วรรณนาแห่งการสื่อสาร และเพื่อศึกษากลวิธีทางภาษาที่ใช้ในการสัมภาษณ์บุคคลสามกลุ่มในปริจเฉทการสัมภาษณ์รายการโหนกระแส ผู้วิจัยเก็บข้อมูลจากช่องยูทูบ “โหนกระแส [Hone-krasae] official” ครั้งที่มีผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์ครบสามกลุ่ม ได้แก่ ผู้ก่อเหตุ ผู้เสียหาย และบุคคลที่สาม ตั้งแต่เดือนมกราคม จนถึง เดือนสิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2566 มีจำนวนทั้งหมด 12 ครั้ง รวมความยาว 13 ชั่วโมง 54 นาที 44 วินาทีผลการศึกษาองค์ประกอบของการสื่อสารในปริจเฉทการสัมภาษณ์รายการโหนกระแสตามแนวชาติพันธุ์วรรณนาแห่งการสื่อสารพบว่าองค์ประกอบของการสื่อสารในปริจเฉทการสัมภาษณ์รายการโหนกระแสที่สำคัญและมีผลต่อกลวิธีทางภาษาที่ผู้สัมภาษณ์ใช้ในการสัมภาษณ์ในรายการโหนกระแส คือ จุดมุ่งหมายและผู้ร่วมเหตุการณ์ กล่าวคือ จุดมุ่งหมายและผู้ร่วมเหตุการณ์ทำให้คำถามที่ผู้สัมภาษณ์ใช้ถามบุคคลสามกลุ่ม ได้แก่ ผู้ก่อเหตุ ผู้เสียหาย และบุคคลที่สาม มีความแตกต่างกัน อย่างไรก็ตามนอกจากจุดมุ่งหมายและผู้ร่วมเหตุการณ์แล้ว ผู้วิจัยยังพบว่าน้ำเสียงยังเป็นอีกหนึ่งองค์ประกอบที่มีความสำคัญที่ส่งผลให้การสัมภาษณ์บุคคลสามกลุ่มแตกต่างกันผลการศึกษากลวิธีทางภาษาที่ใช้ในการสัมภาษณ์บุคคลสามกลุ่มในปริจเฉทการสัมภาษณ์รายการโหนกระแส แบ่งเป็น 2 กลวิธีหลัก ได้แก่ 1) กลวิธีการถาม พบว่ากลวิธีการถามบุคคลสามกลุ่มในปริจเฉทการสัมภาษณ์รายการโหนกระแสมี 13 กลวิธี และ 2) กลวิธีเสริมการถาม พบว่ากลวิธีเสริมการถามบุคคลสามกลุ่มในปริจเฉทการสัมภาษณ์รายการโหนกระแสมี 14 กลวิธี เมื่อพิจารณาในเชิงเปรียบเทียบพบว่ากลวิธีที่ปรากฏในการสัมภาษณ์บุคคลทั้งสามกลุ่ม ได้แก่ ผู้ก่อเหตุ ผู้เสียหาย และบุคคลที่สาม มีทั้งกลวิธีที่ปรากฏในบุคคลสามกลุ่ม กลวิธีที่ปรากฏในบุคคลสองกลุ่ม และกลวิธีที่ปรากฏในบุคคลกลุ่มเดียว ซึ่งมีความถี่ในการปรากฏที่แตกต่างกัน โดยสัมพันธ์กับบทบาทของผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์ที่แตกต่างกัน และการคาดหวังคำตอบจากบุคคลทั้งสามกลุ่มที่แตกต่างกันของผู้สัมภาษณ์

In “Why Blackness, Black Girl?” I argue that as a consequence of imperialism, Western Blackness has an interdependent relationship with whiteness, resulting in the domination of Western Blackness over non-Western Blackness. Tensions between both groups are usually portrayed by Western media as divisive. I pose Multilocality as a theory to reconcile this tension. I use Taiye Selasi's concept of the multilocal, and her Three Markers (3 R’s) to identify where hybridized identities are local to and how they can connect to each local space. Weaving together Ernest Hemingway’s biography and literature with her own life, Tracie Nicolai analyzes the impact of Hemingway’s life and literature in the classroom and outside of it. War trauma is analyzed in relation to rape and its lasting effects, paralleling the impacts and the traumas that shape our philosophies and our lives. Nicolai explores how Hemingway wrote of war and his own injuries, and she discusses the distance evident between his own life experiences and his subsequent fiction writings. In the following paper, I discuss how Ernest Hemingway’s hyper-masculine persona influences how his male characters are interpreted by some readers. More specifically, I take the character of Nick Adams and look at him as being a representation of one of Hemingway’s male characters that diverges from the hyper-masculine persona that Hemingway had created for himself.
