Development Studies Faculty Publications

Through a roundtable conversation via Zoom, teachers, pastors, and graduate students discussed the place of gender, citizenship, and faith in their identity formation and social accountability to articulate a hermeneutical lens specific to Southeast Asian contexts that shape and critique queer identities. These participants—primarily ministers, theological students, and seminary formators—engaged in organic, fluid, and multifocal turns to capture experiences that undergird the realities of women and LGBTQIQ+ people of faith in the region.

This thesis project overlaps rhetorical approaches to digital communication with emerging data on higher education pedagogies in order to identify barriers to participation and engagement. A grounded theory meta-analysis is utilized to interpret data presented from literature published after the shift to emergency remote learning (ERL) as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The data is presented thematically to deconstruct the infrastructural and pedagogical relationships that emerged from the literature on hybrid and remote pedagogies. This project considers the rhetoric of Christian nationalism on display before, during, and after the insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6^th, 2021. I will show how Christian nationalism on Jan 6^th can be framed using Jenny Edbauer’s ideas of rhetorical ecologies and Thomas Rickert’s ideas of rhetorical ambiance by considering the speakers at the insurrection and a pastor who has been publicly vocal about his motives. The term “mnemotechnics” has been misinterpreted by scholars due to a lack of a clear and concise definition available for reference. Though there are contemporary scholarship references to mnemotechnics, these references avoid a definition and are often in a context that does not consider how ancient rhetoricians utilized the practice. Without a concise and unified definition, the term mnemotechnics takes on a variety of divergent meanings through different scholarship, preventing a similarity in terms to ideas and obscuring the practice of the rhetoricians who utilized mnemotechnics. Using the framework of the Uses and Gratifications theory, this study explores strategies that radio hosts use to engage traditional radio listeners. The analysis aims to understand the intent of radio jocks' words, categorizing what they say into different uses and gratifications: positive mood management, diversion, negative mood management, interpersonal relationships, personal identity, and surveillance. Through a content analysis of leading Philadelphia radio stations across a range of genres and time slots, 15 hours of radio were coded, five different genres within different time frames of the day. Sports are fraught with gender inequality and sexism. This research focuses on differences in public opinion regarding top athletes' personal social media. The study investigates gender differences in topic, gender differences in tone, gender differences in platform, and differences in sports. Additionally, it aims to explore the tone and topics of comments on Instagram and X. Using the methodology of content analysis, this study will examine comment tone (e.g. negative, positive, or neutral), as well as whether the topic of comments is sports-related or gender-related. Findings provide insight into gender differences in the treatment of athletes in the digital sphere.

However, similar regulations for alcohol alternative beverages are less explored, which could allow alcohol alternative products to create awareness for alcoholic beverages among youth. Stoicism today, known as “Modern Stoicism” or “contemporary Stoicism,” has undergone a recent revival in interest, leading to a new wave of academic and popular study. New Hampshire is a concept album: a recording project inspired by Robert Frost’s (1874-1963) large poetic work of the same title. After reading Frost’s lengthy first poem (also titled “New Hampshire”) I felt an immediate connection between his texts and my musical style. Frost’s “New Hampshire” features many depictions of nature and creates mystery through its colorful, sometimes vague imagery that leaves interpretive space for the imaginative reader, which, in my opinion, is the mark of a great poet. This qualitative research aimed to explore how the embodied mandala method, grounded in the Embodiment–Projection–Role (EPR) framework and the concept of the mandala as a dramatic structure of the mind, can support the development of empathy in Thai adolescents. The study involved ten participants aged 13–15 who engaged in expressive arts activities across six sessions. Data were collected through structured written interviews, reflection notes, and artwork, and analyzed thematically. Two key themes emerged: (1) Emotional Echoes: Knowing Through Feeling (affective empathy), and (2) Beyond Distance: Bridging Self and Other (cognitive and affective empathy). The interdisciplinary nature of digital history presents challenges in retrieving and evaluating publications within scholarly communities. This research investigates the impact of classification on the evaluation of digital history research, collaboration patterns, and barriers to interdisciplinary collaboration. The study employs a scoping review of 109 publications from academic online databases and interviews with fifteen experts from eleven countries. Findings reveal that digital history can be identified within the academic landscape through distinct characteristics of scholarly communication, including publication venues, researcher affiliations, natural and controlled vocabularies, information-seeking behaviors, and publication practices. วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการวิพากษ์สังคมและกลวิธีสร้างอารมณ์ขันเพื่อวิพากษ์สังคมในเรื่อง “ชุดเฒ่า” ของมนัส จรรยงค์ จำนวน 59 เรื่อง ซึ่งตีพิมพ์ระหว่างพุทธทศวรรษ 2490-2500 ผลการศึกษาพบว่ารวมเรื่องสั้น “ชุดเฒ่า” ของมนัส จรรยงค์นำเสนอแนวคิดวิพากษ์สังคมที่โดดเด่น 4 แนวคิด ได้แก่ แนวคิดวิพากษ์การรับวัฒนธรรมอเมริกัน แนวคิดวิพากษ์การกลายเป็นสังคมทุนนิยม แนวคิดวิพากษ์ความวุ่นวายทางการเมือง และแนวคิดวิพากษ์นโยบายรัฐและเจ้าหน้าที่รัฐ ผู้เขียนใช้อารมณ์ขันเป็นเครื่องมือหลักในการนำเสนอแนวคิดดังกล่าวและมีกลวิธีสร้างอารมณ์ขันที่โดดเด่น 3 ประการ ได้แก่ การสร้างอารมณ์ขันผ่านโครงเรื่องและเนื้อเรื่อง การสร้างอารมณ์ขันผ่านตัวละคร และการสร้างอารมณ์ขันผ่านกลวิธีทางภาษา ผลการศึกษาทำให้เห็นว่าเรื่องชุดนี้ชี้ให้เห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมือง เศรษฐกิจ และสังคมในยุคสงครามเย็น โดยเฉพาะผลกระทบของความเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวต่อคนชนบท อารมณ์ขันในเรื่องสั้นเหล่านี้นอกจากจะสร้างความสำเริงอารมณ์แล้วยังช่วยเอื้ออำนวยให้ผู้ประพันธ์สามารถแสดงความคิดเห็นเชิงวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ต่อประเด็นที่ละเอียดอ่อนในช่วงที่สังคมอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของรัฐบาลเผด็จการ

The usually large number of scriptwriters associated with contemporary television’s dramatic serials renders the attribution of primary creative or authorial ownership particularly difficult.  The result has been to ascribe written imprimatur for a series to the head writer/showrunner.  Yet, there are other, conflicting ways to understand authorial influence or control over a TV series, for example, through producing entities.  Thus, How to Get Away with Murder (2014-2020) is a Shondaland production, part of the Shonda Rhimes collection, and readily identifiable as a significant entry in the Rhimes compendium.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-2023) and Mad Men (2007-2015) share a common genre, location, and era.  Both are period dramas, set in New York City, as the waning 1950s transition into the 1960s.  Additionally, both television serials address changing cultural conditions, especially surrounding gender.  Yet, when analyzed through the prism of nostalgia, the two programs deviate in significant ways.  This essay uses Grainge’s (2000) distinction between nostalgia as mood and nostalgia as aesthetic style, applying it to the two television serials.  It also incorporates concepts of nostalgia as critique (Cook, 2005), as well as imagined nostalgia as the longing “for …

In this project I research the counternarratives within spoken word poetry by authors of color (i.e., Rafeef Ziadah, José Olivarez, and Denise Frohman) and how they resist the dominant narratives that are broadcast towards a larger audience. I analyze categories of counterstory through the following paired themes: immigration/citizenship, and joy/trauma. I delve into the heavy importance of community within my project in the realm of spoken word poetry. A lot of poetry is going against dominant narratives, community within this discourse gives a sense of belonging and relatability to the experience of the spoken word performers.

My analysis of the texts Sulwe by Lupita Nyong'o and Black Is Brown Is Tan by Arnold Adoff works to evaluate the representation of colorism in children’s literature to understand how it is represented and has evolved in its messaging towards a young audience. Using the frameworks of Critical Race Theory, Critical Skin Theory and Color Blindness under a lens of colorism, my research utilizes visual analysis to view how it is physically conveyed and research in the literacy of children in understanding intersectional issues.
