Unlike in the United Kingdom and the United States, where Quakerism has been in existence since the seventeenth century, it has only been a presence on the African continent for 122 years, since 1902. The earliest missionaries, who were sent by the Friends Africa Board of Missions of the former Five Fears Meeting (now Friends United Meeting) in Richmond, Indiana, planted Quakerism in Africa on the evangelical platform. Forty years later other missionaries, principally drawn from England, came with a different tradition: unprogrammed Quakerism (or the “silent tradition,” as it is known by the African Quakers).

The liberal branch of the Religious Society of Friends today is undoubtedly theologically diverse—for example, in Britain Yearly Meeting, the committee who are revising the book of discipline are explicitly inviting contributions from nontheist as well as universalist and Christian perspectives.¹ Some members of the community find this a source of considerable anxiety. From the centrality of the Bible, to baptism, to holy commu- nion, to simplicity and plain dress, to the nomination of leaders, to the use of alcohol and not swearing oaths, in his essay “Tradition and Transformation, on Worship among Kenyan Friends: Reconsidering Fox’s Rejection of Rituals,” George Busolo Lukalo examines the evolving ways in which the Kenyan Quaker church continues to consider the importance and meaning for their own context of George Fox’s rejection of rituals—sometimes complying with Fox’s precedent, but often reinstating certain ritualistic practices precisely as a way of preserving their Quaker convictions.

In her essay “Rationality, Silence, and the Numinous: Exploring the Mystical Theology of Otto, Thurman, and Panikkar,” Welling Hall traces out the thought of these three important advocates of mysticism as they struggle with the relationship between rea- son and that which transcends rational comprehension, an issue of ongoing interest and concern to Quaker theology. In light of this essay, we might ask ourselves whether our rituals or lack thereof are an impediment to a deeper connection with God, or a means thereunto?

Since the mid-twentieth century, music has played a central role in encounters and interactions between the people of Japan and those of African descent. It proved far more effective for pro- moting interracial dialogue and understanding than efforts in the early 1900s to foster an alliance against white supremacy and imperialism. This essay unpacks the ways that encounters with Black music transformed Japanese musicking and generated knowledge and empathy for people of African descent among Japanese. Personal interactions between Black and Japanese musicians constituted a process of “grassroots globalization” that circumvented the dominance of American mass media in representing African …

Flooding is a prevalent threat to community wellbeing, particularly in West Virginia where the mountainous topography and narrow valleys create perfect conditions for flood water to accumulate. To more deeply understand how hazards, such as flood events, become disastrous, we must consider not only the environmental/physical aspects, but also political, economic, and social dimensions. Thinking holistically about flood vulnerability acknowledges the influence of economic positioning, inadequate policies, industrial legacies, etc. which result in varied vulnerabilities to hazards within communities. Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) follows the life of a doomed high-class gay man named Dorian while revealing a discussion of art and the imitation of life itself. This paper reveals the parallels between characters like Dorian and Lord Henry's life to Wilde himself and how they all move through society as high-class gay men. The intersectionality of both identities provides a social commentary on societal policing, compulsory heterosexuality, and the villainization of queerness through the lives of men who lived in 19th-century England with challenges like the Criminal Amendment Act of 1885 and laws against sodomy. …

This paper explores Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as a therapeutic diary through which she processes her losses and traumas. It will draw parallels between Shelley's life experiences: loss of a mother; loss of children; relationships throughout her life and the characters in Frankenstein. These parallels will demonstrate a deep analysis of how her writing had reflected important themes such as mother lessness, abandonment, grief, and isolation. When examining transformations between the different editions the paper argues that Frankenstein is not simply a gothic masterpiece, but it is a path through which Shelley worked to process her inner conflicts that were caused …

This dissertation is an interdisciplinary work that explores the intersection of humanities and technical communication by focusing on the presence and impact of software company workplace bias in technical professional communication. It focuses on workplace bias in technical communication because, when present, bias can impact the experiences that technical communicators and end-users (people who use the software) have with the software. This mixed-methods study consists of a survey, an interview, and a new diagram designed to help technical communicators mitigate biases in technical documentation. All the cards seem to be stacked against belief in immortality. Nonetheless, the resources of particular religious traditions may avail where generic philosophical solutions fall short. With attention to the boredom and narcissism critiques, intimations of deathlessness in Śāntideva’s radical altruism, and recent Christian debates on the soul and the intermediate state, I propose two criteria for a coherent religion-specific belief in immortality: (1) the belief is supported by a fully realized religious tradition, (2) the belief satisfies the demand for self-transcendence as well as for self-preservation. Flannery O’Connor’s 1952 novel, Wise Blood, is a frequently misunderstood classic. While O’Connor is very rarely associated with reader response theory, its framework offers a way to more fully appreciate O’Connor as an author and Wise Blood as a novel while addressing aspects of critics’ confusion. The objective of this study is to consider a previously under-researched area of O’Connor scholarship while offering greater clarity to Wise Blood. In the rapidly evolving landscape of English composition education, the integration of AI writing tools like ChatGPT and Claude 2.0 has marked a significant shift in pedagogical practices. A mixed-method study conducted in Fall 2023 across three sections, including one English Composition I and two English Composition II courses, provides insightful revelations. The study, comprising 28 student respondents, delved into the impact of AI tools through surveys, analysis of writing artifacts, and a best practices guide developed by an honors student. This paper has three objectives. First, we establish that although Spain has attempted to distance itself from its role in the sub-saharan African slave trade and the significance blackness plays within its borders, there exists a significant population of people of African descent from Latin America living in Spain. Second, we show Black people are living what Sadiyah Hartmann refers to as the afterlife of slavery in Latin America. This article explores the use of the diplomatic meal to confer prestige within Irish international relations between 1934 and 1940 when Éamon de Valera was both President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State and Minister for External Affairs. It examines how state hospitality evolved under de Valera’s leadership and how de Valera used the meal to confer varying levels of prestige, indicative of rank, status and provenance, on his guests of honour at Dublin Castle.
