Critical Evaluation

In this piece Edona Hasanaj writes about her experiences in CPN 100 with three different writing assignments—a narrative, a rhetorical analysis, and an argumentative piece. Throughout Hasanaj draws both on her feelings about the process and direct quotations from her own work. She weaves together a sense of what she wrote in each assignment, as well as how that writing taught her different skills and possibilities for her writing in the future.

The following critical evaluation piece offers a reflection at the conclusion of CPN 101. In this piece Ashley Klees considers a number of different skills and strategies that she learned through CPN 101, including the need for specificity, the importance of finding and following a model, and how to modify writing for different audiences. She notes how these experiences in CPN 101 will be important in her future career as a teacher, not only in writing to different audiences, but also in differentiating lesson plans for a range of different students.

Asian and Asian American students are achieving academic success at disproportionate rates, even when faced with low social capital (i.e., English is not the primary language spoken at home) and high rates of poverty (especially in urban settings like New York City). A contributing factor to their academic success is shadow education. Shadow education (SE) is defined as systemized learning that occurs outside of compulsory schooling, at private cost, with the objective of guiding students through and providing them with a competitive edge in school admissions—often with a focus on high-stakes standardized academic exams (Bray, 1999, 2013). This dissertation explores children's authors' experiences of and motivations for including religious and spiritual themes in their picture books. It investigates the intricate connection between authors' backgrounds, including their cultural, spiritual, or religious, and familial roots, and how these elements permeate their writing. The study examines these authors' lived experiences and personal narratives, uncovering how their unique identities shape the portrayal of complex spiritual or religious themes in children's literature. Across the interviews, several themes were identified, including family teachings, religious upbringing, and personal spirituality. This dissertation investigates and demonstrates the nature and impact of public diplomacy and propaganda efforts employed by the United States of America across Eastern Europe throughout the Cold War, focusing on the People’s Republic of Bulgaria as a case study. Bulgaria's unique position as a steadfast ally of the Soviet Union underpinned by a deep-rooted Russian-Bulgarian “special relationship” (based on shared cultural, religious, and political ties forged over the course of a century), makes it an especially compelling subject for understanding the effectiveness of American initiatives in penetrating even the most loyal Soviet satellite states during the Cold War. This dissertation offers a cultural history of the symbiotic relationship between consumerism, nuclear war and the ideal of the nuclear family as these concepts are reflected in popular film franchises launched in the 1980s during the heyday of Ronald Reagan’s presidency. Each chapter studies the strong correlation between blockbuster film and Reagan’s militarism, his invocations of family values, and most importantly, his investment in turning American politics into a nostalgic movie promising a happy Hollywood ending. His work is expressive and personal, inspired by the tension between competing realities. His subjects are often from his own circle of friends and family and the natural world, but he freely jumps between figuration and abstraction. He received a BFA in Art with Honors from BYU in 1994. He was part of the Inscape staff at least in Winter of 1988 and designed some killer merch.

Gary Hall has two art degrees from BYU: a BFA with an emphasis in ceramics completed in 1995, as well as an MFA in ceramics completed in 2007. In the years between his degrees and up to the present time Gary has worked at bronze casting foundries in the Utah Valley area learning all the aspects of transforming clay sculptures into cast bronze. Currently Gary teaches intro to sculpture classes at UVU and works at Adonis Bronze Foundry in Alpine, Utah. He is also very active in art shows in the state and the south west region.
