Reflections On Select Works Of Professional Writing And Rhetoric, Joy Tersigni
Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
The following portfolio includes final pieces from three courses in the Master of Arts in the field of English with a specialization in Professional Writing and Rhetoric program. The first two pieces deal with the analysis, evaluation, and creation of an effective instructional user guide. In the first piece, the current version of an instructional guide for an online pedagogical platform is evaluated for strengths and areas for improvement using a framework for analyzing on-screen text. After analyzing the original instructional guide, I develop version 2.0 of the instructional user guide as the second piece. The second piece is a …
Translating Poetry As A Poet Through The Lyrics Of Hermann Hesse, Ethan Plate
Translating Poetry As A Poet Through The Lyrics Of Hermann Hesse, Ethan Plate
2024 Student Academic Showcase
In translating Hermann Hesse's lyric poem "Ravenna (1)," I have used an approach that tries to balance maintaining the spirit of the original while also engaging with the work as an essentially creative process. I have gone against the precedent set by previous English translator James Wright by maintaining formal elements, such as rhyme scheme, at the price of some literal exactness. On the other hand, I have also detailed the ways that I have built into the translation some of my own interpretations of the poem as well as Hesse’s overall body of work. I have justified this extension …
Artistic Identities In Japan And The United States In The 19th-20th Centuries, Mutsumi Yuki
Artistic Identities In Japan And The United States In The 19th-20th Centuries, Mutsumi Yuki
2024 Student Academic Showcase
This project explores artistic identities in Japan and the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. The main foci of this study are motifs and methodologies seen in paintings. In the 1800s, both countries transitioned to open their gates to the world, which greatly influenced their respective artistic cultures. Around this time, Japan continued to preserve its traditional techniques while actively adopting and trading styles and artifacts internationally. Meanwhile, in the United States, American realism and landscape paintings were established and advanced by paying homage to the natural environment of the country. My comparative study aims to deepen our …

Passage of Time
The Evolution of Art and Technology Through the Ages
Abstract
"Passage of Time" explores the intersection of art and technological evolution through a series of portraits that transition from youth to old age, arranged sequentially from left to right. As each head turns, the face ages accordingly. These portraits illustrate the evolution of art styles throughout history, each representing a significant art movement and cultural context, pairing visual art with concurrent technological milestones.
The portrait series is presented on a background panel with a drawing depicting the evolution of technology from ancient times to the present, which …

The Oracle Of The Pig's Head, Taylor L. Denton
The Oracle Of The Pig's Head, Taylor L. Denton
LSU Master's Theses
The Oracle of the Pig’s Head is a collection of two poems, a short story, and a novel centered around themes of the role of the feminine body in society, monstrosity, disgust, divinity, and human impact on the environment. Inspired by other works of eco-criticism, gothic literature, surrealism, Appalachian folklore, and Greco-Roman mythology, this collection explores how marginalized bodies interact in a world forever altered by climate change.
Denton is primarily interested in how severe climate change has influenced not only human’s overall relationship to the environment, but also how writers are meant to engage with a world riddled with …
Hester Prynne: The Angel Pioneer Of Sin & Punishment (A Poetry Collection Inspired By "The Scarlet Letter"), Raya Kruger
Hester Prynne: The Angel Pioneer Of Sin & Punishment (A Poetry Collection Inspired By "The Scarlet Letter"), Raya Kruger
2024 Student Academic Showcase
This creative research project is in the form of a poetry collection including 11 poems inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter. This project includes research on the novel itself, but research also conducted on Puritan poet Anne Bradstreet and her ideas on womanhood. Through poetry, I present my thesis as Hester Prynne being an “Angel Pioneer”; as Hester is forced to journey into an unexplored world of sin and punishment within the events of the novel. With my project, I aim to convey Hester Prynne’s character transformation from a sinful woman to an angelic figure full of mercy …
A Comparison Of Japanese And American Tattoos, Zachary Martin
A Comparison Of Japanese And American Tattoos, Zachary Martin
2024 Student Academic Showcase
In the Japanese culture, tattoos began as a form of punishment for criminals, while tattoos in the American culture began as a display of one’s title as sailor. Throughout time, tattoos in Japan became more synonymous with pride and loyalty, albeit still being primarily used by criminals and members of Japanese gangs. In American cultures, tattoos shifted from a sailor's declaration and pride towards a personal statement by the individual wearing the tattoo. This presentation investigates the similarities and differences in Japanese and American tattoos through their uses in history and present day, as well as the symbolisms and meanings …

This capstone study explores students' engagement levels in Gallaudet’s classrooms through a compilation of videos courtesy of Gallaudet’s Bilingual Evaluation, Testing, and Assessment Center (BETA Center). Students' engagement in videos of classes taught by a professor who uses ASL interpreters (indirect communication) and those of professors fluent in ASL (direct communication) are analyzed. The video analysis consists of two classes taught by professors fluent in ASL and one taught by a professor utilizing ASL interpreters. Student and professor surveys also contributed to the data collection. This research aims to analyze the differences between each classroom type and contribute to identifying …

Uncomplicating The Complicated: The Definition Of Life, Jennifer S. Primatic
Uncomplicating The Complicated: The Definition Of Life, Jennifer S. Primatic
Honors College Theses
The issue of defining life has long been debated by biologists and philosophers alike, but the issue surrounding it has been that the definition is overcomplicated and attempts to include so many definitions from previous scientific discussions. The proposed definition is– a living thing consists of an organic entity which, taken out of the ideal condition, will work toward sustaining itself without outside influence. This definition addresses many issues present in the previous definition, while also including organic entities which should be considered alive.
