Frederick C. Cubberly: "A Friend Of The Oppressed", Nicole Brown
Frederick C. Cubberly: "A Friend Of The Oppressed", Nicole Brown
Florida Historical Quarterly
Little is known about the life of Floridian Fred Cubberly, despite his importance in the legal and political history of Florida in the early twentieth century. This is unfortunate. He played a key role in initiating the United States Department of Justice's decades-long campaign against peonage, a form of slavery. His efforts led to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1905 decision that secured the federal government's authority to prosecute perpetrators of this crime. In the course of his career he was a mine superintendent, lawyer, U.S. Customs Collector, U.S. District Commissioner, U.S. District Attorney, Gainesville Municipal Judge, candidate for Florida Attorney …
Catching The Spirit: The Melrose Ladies Literary And Debating Society 1890-1899, Cynthia L. Patterson
Catching The Spirit: The Melrose Ladies Literary And Debating Society 1890-1899, Cynthia L. Patterson
Florida Historical Quarterly
At the January 19, 1894 public dedication of their newly-completed meeting hall, the members of the Melrose Ladies Literary and Debating Society listened attentively while the society president, Mrs. Eliza M. King, recited for a public audience including many of the town's leading citizens, the proud history of the society's first three years. Society secretary, Miss Nellie Glen, also read from a report she had presented previously (privately to club members in February 1893) that in "mid summer of 1890," members of the club, "having caught something of the spirit in this progressive age," met together to plan "some cooperative …

William Panton, British Merchant And Politico: Negotiating Allegiance In The Spanish And Southern Indian Borderlands, 1783-1801, David Narrett
Florida Historical Quarterly
Panton and his business partner John Leslie were the most politically adept merchants of Florida's shores from the height of the American Revolutionary War until the close of the eighteenth century. Renowned for their mastery of the Indian trade, they were native Scots who exemplified their country's rising place in the British Empire over distant comers of the globe. Immigrating to South Carolina in the early 1770s, both men did business there and in neighboring Georgia, where Panton came to reside. While they may not have known each other personally at the time, the war would bring them together. After …

The Mouse And The Statehouse: Intersections Of Florida's Capitols And Walt Disney World, Derek R. Everett
The Mouse And The Statehouse: Intersections Of Florida's Capitols And Walt Disney World, Derek R. Everett
Florida Historical Quarterly
The construction projects announced in 1965 reflected Florida's ascendance as one of the country's largest and most influential states. The first enabled a commission to either expand or replace the aging, insufficient capitol in Tallahassee. An Orlando newspaper announced the second, declaring that Walt Disney intended to build an east coast version of Disneyland there. These seemingly disparate endeavors dovetailed in myriad ways for nearly two decades, particularly in their employment of symbolic architecture. Carefully orchestrated visions for the Florida capitol complex and Walt Disney World reflected the Sunshine State's growth and popularity as both a tourist destination and place …

Cocoa And Cabbage: Two Palms Vie To Officially Represent The State Of Florida, Jonathan (Jono) Miller
Cocoa And Cabbage: Two Palms Vie To Officially Represent The State Of Florida, Jonathan (Jono) Miller
Florida Historical Quarterly
Every state in the Union has a state seal and a state tree despite neither the United States Constitution nor the U.S. Congress mandating the official designation of either. Nevertheless, these seals and trees and the process by which they are adopted and modified can illuminate the political personalities and historical peregrinations of a state. The cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto) did not officially make it onto Florida's State Seal until after Woodstock and the first manned lunar landing. The saga of Florida's State Seal and tree contains intriguing tidbits oflore. Who knew that a study of Florida's State Seal would …

Teaching Signal Processing Design For Effect Pedals: Making Signal Processing Tangible, V J. Manzo, Ryan Mckenna, Matthew Halper
Teaching Signal Processing Design For Effect Pedals: Making Signal Processing Tangible, V J. Manzo, Ryan Mckenna, Matthew Halper
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Teaching digital audio processes and their uses in musical contexts is a challenging subject area for music technology instructors. While there are many books and resources that explain audio processes using diagrams and charts that merely require the reader to have modest skills in mathematics, computer science, or electrical engineering, these extra-musical subjects still pose great challenges for music students. Given the time and scope limitations implicit in a single semester, pedagogy for effects processes often has to be reduced to qualitative descriptions and audio examples. The more ambitious task of implementing such processes, realizing an algorithm via a plugin …
Defining The Hourglass Framework Of Technical And Musical Concepts In Music Technology Education With Two Case Studies In Course Development, Timothy Hsu
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
As the field of music technology connects music with a vast array of technical fields, a mature music technology program ideally challenges and develops students that incorporate musical contexts of technical ideas and the technical concepts of musical ideas. The educational challenge of music technology programs lies in the balancing of technical and musical material in the curriculum. In structuring this balance, this paper proposes an hourglass framework, where music technology sits at the neck of two sides, where one side is built on the tradition of Western and non-Western music history, theory, and repertoire, and the other side is …
Radio And Rebellion: An Investigation Of Radio And Its Use By Czechoslovakian Youth During The 1968 August Invasion, Jillian E. Updegraff
Radio And Rebellion: An Investigation Of Radio And Its Use By Czechoslovakian Youth During The 1968 August Invasion, Jillian E. Updegraff
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
In 1968, an already tumultuous year throughout the world, Czechoslovakians showed immense bravery in the face of a Soviet-led invasion between August 21and August 27. While separate bodies of existing scholarship examine the role of radio in the resistance efforts and the part that youth played in these efforts, little scholarship examines the two in conjunction. This paper explores the ways in which radio impacted the actions of youth movements and encouraged cross-generational resistance among the Czech population during the invasion and subsequent occupation by the Soviet Union. Through an examination of radio broadcasts, photographs, and student accounts, this paper …

Cobol Cripples The Mind!: Academia And The Alienation Of Data Processing, Neel Shah
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This paper writes a social history of the programming language COBOL that focuses on its reception in academia. Through this focus, the paper seeks to understand the contentious relationship between data processing and the academy. In historicizing COBOL, the paper also illuminates the changing nature of the academy-industry-military triangle that was a mainstay of early computing.

“They Are Not Of Our Race”: Northern Republican Senators, Anti-Cuban Prejudices, And The American Opposition To Cuban Acquisition In 1859, Laura I. Sastoque
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
Which factors do U.S. statesmen consider when incorporating new U.S. territories? Which populations and territories are deemed compatible with the project of the American nation, and which aren’t? At the U.S. Congress in 1859, upon the presentation of Senate Bill 497, U.S. Senators were debating whether to allocate a millionaire sum of money to President James Buchanan in order to acquire Cuba. The Congress debates were divided between Northern Republican and Southern Democrat Senators, of whom the former consistently opposed the annexation of Cuba. The reasons for opposition were various, but this study focuses on the senator’s suggestion that the …

Solidarietà Sotto La Terra: Italian American Community Building And Ethnic Strife In The 1913-14 Copper Country Strike, Andrew Js Santamarina
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
The 1913-14 Copper Country Strike was one of the most tragic labor strikes of the twentieth century but remains largely ignored by mainstream historical research. This article analyzes the importance of ethnic strife as a central factor in the strike using the Italian community as a case study. The Italian community alongside the other Eastern and Southern European immigrant communities proved essential for empowering and organizing immigrant laborers to confront capital and reconcile ethnic tensions with Western European immigrant communities during the 1913-14 strike.
An Instrument Of Collective Redemption: The Moral Mondays Movement And Grassroots Community Organizing, Ben Levitt
An Instrument Of Collective Redemption: The Moral Mondays Movement And Grassroots Community Organizing, Ben Levitt
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This article studies the emergence and development of the Moral Mondays movement in North Carolina in 2013 and 2014. In the backdrop of the rightward shift in North Carolina politics and the Shelby County v. Holder decision, I argue that the Moral Mondays movement grew as a site of resistance against extremist policies and democratic backsliding in the state. By constructing an historical narrative of the Moral Mondays movement, I demonstrate the power of grassroots community organizing and the possibilities of multi-racial, multi-faith coalition-building. In the process, Moral Mondays can be seen as offering a blueprint for successful community organizing …
Why Africa? Towards A Materialist Understanding Of Racism And The African Slave Trade, Giacomo F. Green
Why Africa? Towards A Materialist Understanding Of Racism And The African Slave Trade, Giacomo F. Green
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
Common historical interpretations of the Atlantic slave system often lose the position Africa within the political-economic haze of the era, either producing confused accounts or eliding the question of causality altogether. I argue that this tendency stems from the corrosive effects of the historian’s position as an observer from the present, and that to understand why Africa was the prime location for the source of human slaves, one needs to take a materialist approach to the problem of origins. Only through careful examination of empire, the plantation complex, and the genesis of the Atlantic working classes can one arrive at …
Panic At The Picture Show: Southern Movie Theatre Culture And The Struggle To Desegregate, Susannah L. Broun
Panic At The Picture Show: Southern Movie Theatre Culture And The Struggle To Desegregate, Susannah L. Broun
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This paper explores the complex desegregation process of movie theatres in the southern United States. Building off of historiography that investigates regulations of postwar teenage sexuality and recent scholarly work that acknowledges the link between sexuality and civil rights, I argue that movie theatres had a uniquely delayed desegregation process due to perceived sexual intrigue of the dark, private theatre space. Through analysis of drive-in and hardtop theatres, censorship of on-screen content, and youth involvement in desegregation, I contend that anxieties of interracial intimacy and unsupervised teenage sexuality produced this especially prolonged integration process.

In two case studies from Pakistan, which I then link to Afghanistan (under the Taliban before and after the Soviet/US proxy war there) as well as the Farmer’s Movement in India—I wish to proffer an intersectional analysis of debates around the issue of women’s rights in the global south. Feminist artivism (art-as-activism), can help build solidarities to mount resistances against globally-inflected state repression in our age of neoliberal economic and religious fundamentalisms, which, working in tandem, seek to roll back the rights of women and minorities in and across South Asia, as elsewhere.
Feminists As Cultural ‘Assassinators’ Of Pakistan, Afiya Shehrbano Zia
Feminists As Cultural ‘Assassinators’ Of Pakistan, Afiya Shehrbano Zia
Journal of International Women's Studies
Pakistan’s annual Aurat March (Women’s March) signifies a milestone in the culture of feminist protest, but a tense impasse follows a series of encounters between sexual and religious politics, and this has serious implications for rights-based activism in the Islamic Republic.
Double Bind Of Muslim Women’S Activism In Pakistan: Case Of Malala Yousafzai And Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Naila Sahar
Double Bind Of Muslim Women’S Activism In Pakistan: Case Of Malala Yousafzai And Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Naila Sahar
Journal of International Women's Studies
A majority of Western feminist studies has dealt with women from the third world as a homogenous entity of poor and passive victims without agency, who need saving and thus need to be spoken for. Chandra Talpade Mohanty and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak have both underscored the urgency of seeing and dealing with third world feminism in terms of a genre that is different in socio-cultural background from Western dynamics, and they emphasize the importance of being wary of the ways in which Western feminism creates the 'discursive homogenization and systematization of the oppression of women in the Third World' (Mohanty, …

Looking At The Nation Through A Lover’S Eye: N. Padmakumar’S Film, A Billion Colour Story, Shreerekha Pillai Subramanian
Journal of International Women's Studies
Cinematic response in India to social justice movements, even when aimed at rectifying communal violence and tensions, reifies entrenched orders separating Hindu from Muslim, citizen from the ‘Other,’ native from the diasporic. To the polyphony of films focused on interfaith love, a recent indie film adds a new ‘look’. Narasimhamurthy Padmakumar’s, A Billion Colour Story (2016) focalizes on a child’s point of view in a black and white filmic narration to dismantle old hatreds and re-ignite love of culture and nation for the very diversity that has become pixelated, walled, entombed and reactionary. More like Nollywood in its reliance on …
Performing Dalit Feminist Youth Activism In South India: Rap, Gaana, And Street Theater, Pramila Venkateswaran
Performing Dalit Feminist Youth Activism In South India: Rap, Gaana, And Street Theater, Pramila Venkateswaran
Journal of International Women's Studies
Young Dalit men and women are changing the narrative of casteist oppression in India. Youth activists perform protest songs in the genre of rap and gaana, using elements of slam poetry and rap from African American artists and blending them with local musical innovations. The performances have deliberate messaging, signaling particular caste and gender injustices, both current and historical. This paper will analyze Dalit youth performances of rap, gaana, and street theater (koothu) in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, to understand the poetics of protest against caste and gender oppression. It will look at the notion of space in …
Subverting Patriarchal Interpretation Of The Ramayan Through A Feminist Lens: A Critical Study Of Sita’S Ramayana, Shruti Chakraborti
Subverting Patriarchal Interpretation Of The Ramayan Through A Feminist Lens: A Critical Study Of Sita’S Ramayana, Shruti Chakraborti
Journal of International Women's Studies
“Re-vision – the act of looking back, of seeing with fresh eyes, of entering an old text from a new critical direction – is for us more than a chapter in cultural history: it is an act of survival”, writes Adrienne Rich in her seminal essay, “When We Dead Awaken: Writing as Re-vision”. Rich firmly advocates that women authors should create spaces for subversion of patriarchal values and ideals through their literary works. Revisionist mythmaking, from a feminist literary perspective, evolves through challenging a preceding text which predominantly manifests androcentric ideas. The present paper aims to examine a female reinterpretation …
Women’S Agency And Pastoral Livelihoods In India: A Review, Aayushi Malhotra, Sailaja Nandigama, Kumar Sankar Bhattacharya
Women’S Agency And Pastoral Livelihoods In India: A Review, Aayushi Malhotra, Sailaja Nandigama, Kumar Sankar Bhattacharya
Journal of International Women's Studies
The role of women in promoting and sustaining pastoral livelihoods remains an under-researched area across the world. Often, studies discuss pastoralism as a male-oriented enterprise, thus overshadowing or ignoring the part played by women in such livelihood practices. In India, where pastoralism itself is essentially a neglected area of research, such discussions remain even sparse. Pastoral communities depending on migratory livestock rearing practices for their livelihoods exhibit gender-based differences in their everyday life in terms of division of labour, mobility patterns, and rights over resources. Women play different roles and responsibilities at the household and community levels that remain intertwined …
Dissenting Bodies, Disruptive Pandemic: Farmers’ Protest And Women’S Participation In Mass Mobilisation In India, Paromita Chakrabarti
Dissenting Bodies, Disruptive Pandemic: Farmers’ Protest And Women’S Participation In Mass Mobilisation In India, Paromita Chakrabarti
Journal of International Women's Studies
While authoritarian states promoting neoliberal forms of governance have taken advantage of COVID-19 to weaken the foundations of civil society, there has also been a significant rise in contemporary struggles for a more democratic society during and around the pandemic. From December 2019 to November 2021, India has seen a significant number of protests. The timeline of collective resistance against the state and its divisive, violent and neoliberal agenda represents a critical juncture in Indian politics. This paper focuses on the farmers’ protests that started from last November and recently ended in a stunning, hard-earned victory. In a sector that …
