Indigenous Women’S Resistance And Healing From Colonial Violence: A Study Of Literature And Art, Demi Riendeau
Indigenous Women’S Resistance And Healing From Colonial Violence: A Study Of Literature And Art, Demi Riendeau
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The purpose of this research is to flip the story of colonization form the perspective of the colonizers, and instead, make room to discuss the power and strength that Indigenous women hold to resist and exist despite the genocidal nature of settler-colonization. This is specifically done through the information given by literature written by Indigenous authors and artwork created by Indigenous peoples. Through these depictions of women, both fictionally and non-fictionally, we see the numerous ways that Indigenous women heal, build community, and resist colonial powers. Throughout the reading and analysis of about fifteen unique texts, there were some particular …
Blood Sugar: A Collection Of Essays On The Highs And Lows Of Diabetes, Annalisa Morganelli
Blood Sugar: A Collection Of Essays On The Highs And Lows Of Diabetes, Annalisa Morganelli
Honors Program Theses and Projects
As soon as I began working on this thesis project, I knew that I wanted this collection to focus on the different aspects of my life that have been affected by me having type one diabetes. The diabetic experience is one that has been underrepresented—and arguably, misrepresented—in popular media. The four non-fiction essays in my collection aim to add my personal experience to the existing literature, showing that while diabetics may have similar experiences, these experiences can also be vastly individualistic. Additionally, while I share my own stories, I explore the general chronic illness experience and how ableism and misunderstanding …
Food Insecurity In Perspective: Writing Food Access Into The Everyday, Colin James Lamusta
Food Insecurity In Perspective: Writing Food Access Into The Everyday, Colin James Lamusta
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The phrase ‘food insecurity’ has taken on a whole new meaning in the social consciousness. All around us the media and research have focused on the issue. In recent years the conditions of the pandemic, inflation, and unemployment have raised attention to the issue of food insecurity to a larger cross-section of American society. In consideration of this, I sought out the current research on food insecurity and the programs serving these food-insecure individuals to serve as a basis for a stage play. The research that proved most valuable in providing a base of inspiration for both the characters as …
Octavia E. Butler’S Earthseed And The God Of Change, Mercedes Alayna Reid-X
Octavia E. Butler’S Earthseed And The God Of Change, Mercedes Alayna Reid-X
Honors Program Theses and Projects
It is my intention in this paper to define Butler’s Change God and illustrate how she created it to end oppression in all forms. It is important to start with a bit of background on Butler herself, sharing how her upbringing and experiences in life influenced her feelings about religion. These feelings are what encouraged writings such as the Parables, helping the reader to understand why Butler felt the need to create a new type of religion instead of making use of one that already existed. Next, I include an introduction to Butler’s journey as a Black science fiction writer. …
Evading Oblivionland, Caitlin Faria
Evading Oblivionland, Caitlin Faria
Honors Program Theses and Projects
When I initially started this project, I hoped to tell stories in genres that I love while exploring the impact my father has had on my life. Although I prefer to write fiction, the nonfiction essays of this piece show who my father is through my eyes as well as provide me with the space to explore and find words for my own fears of losing him one day. The fictional stories interwoven throughout also show how my father inspires my writing even when it does not directly involve him, or a character exactly like him. For example, my dad …
Cruel To Be Unkind, Michelle Landry
Cruel To Be Unkind, Michelle Landry
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Overall, the goal of my campaign is to educate but I tried to put the focus on the facts rather than demanding anything from the viewers. Companies such as PETA often turn viewers away with their demanding and extreme media in hopes to guilt them into changing their ways. Rather than guilting people, I want to make people aware that this is still an issue in our country and educate them on the topic. With these intentions, I created my campaign known as Cruel to Be Unkind.
How The Power Of Film Inspires Christianity, Stephanie Mullins Sellers
How The Power Of Film Inspires Christianity, Stephanie Mullins Sellers
Masters Theses
Ruthie’s Game is a screenplay designed to repeat supernatural episodic events, which, according to research, may act as foundations for faith systems because watching films is a prayerful act, and the more it is repeated the longer the brain stores the memory. The thesis explores how Christian messages are received through film with a brief on the science behind the brain’s activities and how it reflexes film’s episodic events for later use. Testimonies, interviews, and personal comments show an audience seeking secular films with intellectual storyline and with no preaching to the choir. Ruthie’s Game shares Christian messages in an …
Then Sings The Church A New Song, Ian D. Bula
Then Sings The Church A New Song, Ian D. Bula
Masters Theses
The collective life of the Ancient Israelites was defined by a tumultuous journey through the desert as the primary setting where God continuously sought a relationship with them. Their liberation from Egyptian bondage was the central element that resulted from God’s self- revelation and action toward His people. Their response to Him in worship reflects the nature instilled in all humankind to respond in many ways to divine action. One of these ways is through the use of music. Music has accompanied the worship of God’s people since the time of the Patriarchs. The Exodus was the experience that sprung …
Do The National Core Arts Standards (Ncas) Make A Difference In Music Education?, Jordan Mikaela Dues
Do The National Core Arts Standards (Ncas) Make A Difference In Music Education?, Jordan Mikaela Dues
Masters Theses
Fine arts advocates have pushed for arts to remain a foundation of education for decades Arguments have been made and published that participating in music courses increased scores in other subjects. A change occurred in the realm of music education when assessment-based learning and standardized curricula were introduced. The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) was assembled to revise standards for the arts and create a way to assess them. The NCCAS presented the National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) in 2014 which led to its adoption in most states. There are many schools, however, that do not adhere to …
Songs Of Travel: An Analytical Study Of Ralph Williams’ Compositional Styles, Jonathan Jacobs Lawton
Songs Of Travel: An Analytical Study Of Ralph Williams’ Compositional Styles, Jonathan Jacobs Lawton
Masters Theses
Ralph Vaughan Williams is perhaps one of the most prolific and diverse composers from the British Isles to grace the world with his compositions. He was born in the middle of the English Musical Renaissance, a time of musical rejuvenation of the British Art Song that embraced the principles of the Romantic period and placed significance on the importance of national identity. Ralph Vaughan Williams was the embodiment of musical citizenship – a musical philosophy that leans heavily on national identity for inspiration of word and song. In 1901, a young Ralph Vaughan Williams began writing music for Songs of …
The Importance Of Regional Music To Music Education: The 1927 Bristol Sessions, Valerie E. Pickard
The Importance Of Regional Music To Music Education: The 1927 Bristol Sessions, Valerie E. Pickard
Masters Theses
It is widely accepted that the culture in which one lives is important to his/her understanding of self. Likewise, it has been shown that a working knowledge of cultural music aids in developing one’s musical identity. Although research indicates that there appears to be a gap in cultural music education, there has been little written as to how that gap can be filled, especially with respect to Appalachian cultural music. The Southern Appalachian Mountains are rich in musical diversity. In addition to the already present Native Americans, settlers came from Ireland, Germany, Africa, and other European countries and brought with …
Curriculum Development For Beginning Band: Recruitment And Retention Of Minority Students Living In Poverty, Thomas Andrew Langford
Curriculum Development For Beginning Band: Recruitment And Retention Of Minority Students Living In Poverty, Thomas Andrew Langford
Masters Theses
Despite efforts in many schools to offer quality music education to all students, issues still prevent many minority students from participating in band programs. There are important and unique implications for minority students and students who live in poverty and their ability or desire to participate in a band program. Developing curriculum and teaching strategies to reach minority students and students living in poverty is one way to bridge the educational gap and provide an avenue for students to make a better way for themselves. The study examined existing literature to determine factors attracting or retracting this student population from …
Biblical Principles To Prevent Burn-Out For The Music Educator Based On Paul Tripp's Book, "Lead", Shannon Leigh Forester
Biblical Principles To Prevent Burn-Out For The Music Educator Based On Paul Tripp's Book, "Lead", Shannon Leigh Forester
Masters Theses
The Christian music educator and worship leader have common leadership roles where music and faith collide. Research and studies have been produced regarding the application of biblical principles to the role of the worship leader and other church leadership positions, but there is little information on how they apply to the role of the Christian music educator. This curriculum project was created to provide Christian music educators with a strong foundation for growing and maintaining spiritual wellness as they enter the field of music education and assist them in developing a plan for integrating these concepts into their everyday teaching …
Exploring Perceptions Of New Media Among The Lakota Nation, Isabelle C. Kramer
Exploring Perceptions Of New Media Among The Lakota Nation, Isabelle C. Kramer
Theses and Dissertations
Since its inception, the worldwide web has fundamentally altered our understanding of communications. With the rapid adoption of new media around the globe, individuals are increasingly able to communicate with people on the other side of the planet in real-time--traditional boundaries like time and space are no longer relevant barriers to intercultural communication. As such, scholars are scrambling to recognize and understand the broader implications of social media, videoconferencing, blogging, etc on more traditional definitions of culture. Additionally, researchers are beginning to study the ways in which minority cultures are utilizing new media, and the way that new media impacts …

Be The Light: Creating A Space For The Next Generation Of Lighting Designers, Destiny Hyman
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This presentation will highlight my departmental honors thesis. During the fall and spring semester I researched, programmed, and assisted in the installation of the light lab in the Theatre Design and Technology Studio. This presentation will go over the first stages where I researched different intelligent lighting fixtures to find their different properties and ways to install. This presentation then visits the process where I programed the lighting fixtures into a computer software for them to be used and assist in the system installation of the lighting fixtures in the space. This presentation will show examples of lighting paperwork made …
The Oppressed African American Female Voice In Zora Neale Hurston’S Their Eyes Were Watching God And “Sweat”, Kaitlyn Levine
The Oppressed African American Female Voice In Zora Neale Hurston’S Their Eyes Were Watching God And “Sweat”, Kaitlyn Levine
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Zora Neale Hurston moved to New York from Alabama in 1925, where her work contributed to the growing trends of the Harlem Renaissance and had a major impact on African American culture. During Hurston’s lifetime, the voices of African American women were often suppressed by the intersecting forces of racism and sexism. Hurston’s literary work portrayed gender struggles in American society during the twentieth century and represented the oppressed voice of African American women.

I Heard The Tree Scream And I Hated The Sound, Dakota Lopes
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This play is a series of monologues and short scenes, disconnected in their narrative but strung together with a common theme: the experience of being seen. Social media, for all of its effects on the human psyche is particularly peculiar to me in this way; it allows a person to be both the actor and the audience in their own life. Not only does one have to be cognizant of what they are doing but also how they look while they are doing it. It is not enough for one to buy a house or go out for dinner with …

1000 Ways a Black Woman Dies: Stories from the Waiting Room is an original play written by Britney Lee-Anne Mallebranche. The story surrounds a group of women having an “AA” styled group therapy session. They are in some type of waiting room, waiting for final judgement after death. The women share the stories of their deaths as well as having many side conversations throughout. Mallebranche wrote this 45-minute piece as a apart of Bridgewater State University’s Adrian Tinsley Undergraduate Research Program.
Transgressing Time: Life And Death In The Portraiture Of Paula Modersohn-Becker, Elizabeth Ezekiel
Transgressing Time: Life And Death In The Portraiture Of Paula Modersohn-Becker, Elizabeth Ezekiel
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Paula Modersohn-Becker, 1876-1907, had a short, intense life – one in which death remained close by. This closeness is due to a high number of tragedies her family incurred, as well as her (correct) belief that she would die young. This apprehension for death, among other reasons that will be explored in this thesis, led her to be inspired by the Fayum mummy portraits, an ancient funerary art form dating back to 30-40 CE in the Greco-Roman period of Egyptian history. Aside from the exhibition entitled Paula Modersohn-Becker und die ägyptischen Mumienportraitsat the Museen Böttcherstraßethere there remains no scholarship directly …
Blood Quantum? Native Dna? Indigenous Lineage? The Complexities Of Native Authenticity And Identity, Grace Thayer
Blood Quantum? Native Dna? Indigenous Lineage? The Complexities Of Native Authenticity And Identity, Grace Thayer
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Unlike any other ethnic minority in the US, Native Americans are required to authenticate their Indianness, or their relation to Native peoples, in order to qualify for tribal citizenship and justify their identity as Indigenous peoples. In order to become citizens of a Native nation, or to even be considered Indigenous in the eyes of the United States government, Native peoples are often required to prove their Indigeneity, or Nativeness, through blood, DNA, and other seemingly quantifiable measurements. No other minority group is forced to prove their legitimacy to be a citizen of their community in the United States, yet …

Civic Virtue In America During The Gilded Age, Daniel Gregory Lundstedt
Civic Virtue In America During The Gilded Age, Daniel Gregory Lundstedt
Masters Theses
This study will seek to reevaluate the era which historians have traditionally labeled as the Gilded Age. It will do this through an examination of the state of civic virtue in the United States during this period. This will be accomplished through an interdisciplinary foray into America’s past. From it, hopefully some fresh understandings of what America is, and where it is going, can become apparent. This project falls within the broader exploration of the relationship between the citizen and society and will thus hopefully contribute to that set of literature. This project will be a convergence of several subdisciplines …

720-960 Steps: A Historical Review Of Contemporary Techniques And Pedagogies And How They Revolutionized Pageantry For The Modern Marching Band, Stanley K. Holloway
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There is a need for new and innovative marching band techniques in the music field, and most band directors have limited capacity to instill these concepts. Texts from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s concentrated primarily on these concepts and techniques. Gradually, a comprehensive show concept became standard practice. Examination of the existing literature does not reveal a need for more research. Still, some literature demonstrates a need for new and innovative band techniques for marching band, particularly in band pageantry. Although these materials help create a foundation for marching band concepts and have proven effective. They are dated and do …
Development And Pedagogy Of Vocal Jazz Ensembles According To Illinois High School Choral Directors: Perspectives, Andrew Baguisa Evangelista
Development And Pedagogy Of Vocal Jazz Ensembles According To Illinois High School Choral Directors: Perspectives, Andrew Baguisa Evangelista
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study is to explore instructional strategies and participation concerns regarding vocal jazz ensembles according to high school choral directors in Illinois who lead their schools’ vocal jazz programs. High school choir directors without jazz experience often recognize the need to expand their performance and pedagogical abilities in jazz and access to vocal jazz repertory; however, professional development opportunities in Illinois’ music education organization have yet to offer guidance. This leaves choral directors without jazz experience little insight on how to familiarize themselves with jazz styles, pertinent pedagogical ideas, and how to apply available resources towards the …

Social Emotional Learning In The Choral Classroom, Courtney A. Hulsey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Middle school is a pivotal time for many students as they navigate through mental, emotional, and hormonal changes which affect various aspects of their personal and educational well-being. A teacher’s care balancing social and emotional aspects of learning can be catalyst that makes a profound difference for students. Social-emotional learning (SEL) under this title is still in its infancy as a tool for classroom engagement and management. Additionally, there is very little research in the way of SEL specific to the middle school choral classroom. The hope is that in a content analysis of the benefits of SEL through the …

Fostering Greater Interest And Engagement In Scripture Through An Eight-Week Scripture Reading Intervention, Jeffrey Lee Willey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this thesis is to encourage the reading of the Scriptures at Femme Osage Church. The project demonstrates how the Holy Spirit can use simple, daily exposure to the Scriptures to transform apathetic participants into persons enthusiastic about reading their Bibles. The thesis explores the enigmatic problem of apathy toward the Word and its causes from Christian and secular viewpoints. A review of popular methodologies used to address Bible apathy is included. This study claims that Christians fail to read the Scriptures, not because they are lazy, but because of overlooked and misunderstood obstacles that cause apathy toward …

Examining The Effects Of Eating Behaviors On Mental Health And Internalization Of Weight-Based Messaging, Avery E. Bollinger
Theses and Dissertations
The current study sought to explore the effects of eating behaviors on mental health and the internalization of attitudes toward one's appearance. This was performed through a survey distributed through a global online market research firm, Dynata, and gathered 495 eligible participants. Of those, 78 represented the plant-based group, and 417 represented the non-plant-based group. Each completed the survey containing sections with the Mizes Anorectic Cognitions Scale (MACS) to assess if they were at low or high risk for having/developing an eating disorder, a section determining if participants were plant-based (defined as a regimen that encourages whole, plant-based foods and …
