Matters Of Perspective; Local Visual Expertise And Natural History Drawings In Java, 1820-1850, Andreas Weber, Sylvia Van Zanen

This essay examines how local draughtsmen using their visual expertise shaped natural historical knowledge production in colonial Indonesia in the early nineteenth century. The persons at the core of this essay are Tsing Wang Ho and Pieter van Oort, both draughtsmen who worked for the Natuurkundige Commissie voor Nederlandsch-Indië (Committee of Natural History of the Netherlands Indies). By zooming in on the Committee’s fieldwork in Java in the 1830s, this essay highlights that producing scientific drawings of animals and plants was a challenging endeavour. The article analyses representations of the natural world in Indonesia and mainland Southeast Asia in a corpus of Polish and Serbian travel writings for the period between the opening of the Suez Canal (1869) and the outbreak of the First World War (1914). The research is based on travel writings by twenty Polish and Serbian authors, who visited Southeast Asia during the period 1869-1914. Scrutinizing a corpus of such narratives should contribute to the study of perceptions of Southeast Asia, especially among travellers from very diverse backgrounds. Our work adopted an intersectional approach to investigate how women’s racial identity may influence how they evaluate and are impacted by body-positive imagery of women on social media. In a 2 × 2 × 2 experiment (N = 975), we examined how source race (Black vs White) and sexualization (non-sexualized vs sexualized) in body-positive images affect Black and White viewers’ impressions of self-interest, moral appropriateness, and body positivity. Results indicated that viewers generally responded more favorably to non-sexualized (vs sexualized) images: Participants reported less self-interested motivations for sharing, found the images more morally appropriate, and believed they were more …

This study explored the effectiveness of a Willingness to Communicate (WTC) scale with advanced foreign language (L2) learners. The WTC instrument included sections on communicating with native speakers of the L2 and peer language learners in various settings (at home, abroad, in-class and online). As most prior research had focused on beginning language learners, for this study, we recruited participants who began to learn their respective languages in informal, long-term immersion settings. This interdisciplinary, creative thesis aims to deconstruct the stigma directed towards individuals who struggle with substance use disorder (SUD) through the use of a solo art exhibit on Bellarmine University's campus. This exhibit features two large-scale installation sculptures and curated art pieces created by individuals at Crossroads Recovery Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to the gallery exhibition, this research-based written reflection is also included. One of the sculptures portrays the “hurt” that stigma causes for those who struggle with SUD. هدفت الدراسة إلى معرفة التَّسوُّل الإلكتروني في المملكة العربية السعودية، من خلال شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي (توتير نموذجًا)، ووضع الحلول والـمُقترحات العلمية؛ لتقليل حجم هذه الظاهرة. وتُعدّ هذه الدراسة استطلاعية تسعى إلى اكتشاف المتسوّلين، وتحليل الـمُتغيّرات الكمية والكيفية، وتصف الواقع وتحلّله من خلال بيانات (الـمُغرّدين والتغريدات). وقد اُستخدام المنهج الكيفي من خلال أداة تحليل المضمون على عينة (التغريدات) في توتير، خلال مدة زمنية مدتها (4) أشهر سنة 2020م لحالات التَّسوُّل الإلكتروني.

هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى مناقشة دور مبدأ سَدِّ الذَّرائع في الاستنباط الفقهيّ في باب الفقه السِّياسيّ، ولتحقيق هذا الهدف أجابت الدراسة عن الأسئلة الآتية: ما رأي العلماء في مبدأ سَدِّ الذَّرائع؟ وما دور هذا المبدأ في استنباط الأحكام في الفقه السِّياسيّ؟ وقد خلصت الدراسة إلى أن الفقهاء اتفقوا على حجية مبدأ سَدِّ الذَّرائع في حال الإفضاء إلى المَفْسَدة على وجه القطع أو الظنِّ الراجح، واختلفوا في حال الإفضاء إلى المَفْسَدة بصورة كبيرةٍ لم تصل إلى الظن الراجح، وكذلك تبين من خلال استعراض مجموعة من النماذج الفقهية أهمية مبدأ سَدّ الذَّرائع في الاجتهاد في مجال الفقه السِّياسيّ.

Research suggests that successful language learners usually utilize, whether consciously or subconsciously, more effective strategies than less proficient learners (Chamot, 2004). First published in 1849, Charles Averill’s The Cholera-Fiend follows three villains as they attempt to artificially propagate cholera for their own villainous purposes in New York City. Gumbo, a Black servant to one of the villains, is meant to be the humorous relief in the text, but Gumbo experiences a calculated dehumanization from human to disabled, which causes him to be more at-risk for a health crisis—such as a tapeworm or cholera—than his white counterparts. Despite the growing body of scholarship focused on Open Educational Resources (OERs), studies tracking open textbook production are exceedingly rare. To gain insight into the complexities associated with open textbook development, this article’s authors used concurrent verbalisation and pre- and post-concurrent verbalisation interviews to document writing episodes while composing their first coursebook, an open-source text designed for corequisite course pairings of writing fundamentals and introduction to technical writing.
