This report examines how people commuted to work in the United States between 1990 and 2018, focusing on disparities with respect to race and ethnicity, sex, marital status, income, and poverty status

Methods:

Modern competitive video games are complex systems that require players to learn techniques and develop strategies in response to computer- or human-controlled opponents. Building on the work of both game studies scholars and game designers, this thesis analyzes various learning spaces within and surrounding competitive video games, including in-game tutorials, arcades, and online communities. It focuses on “fighting games,” those competitive video games in which, typically, two players control characters to face off in single combat. Through analysis of the interfaces used, the audio-visual artifacts present within the tutorial sections of fighting games, and the paratextual materials produced by members …

Blank Spaces: An Exploration Of Memory And Nostalgia Through Mixed Media, Julianna V. Tillman

Blank Spaces explores the way childhood nostalgia manifests in the physical world through the creation of mixed media pieces. The experimentation with different mediums in my work, such as painting, ceramics, and animation, is emblematic of childhood creative play. These mixed media artworks showcase how memories recalled from the past can influence our interpretation of the present. The familial connection to family and culture, represented through manipulated old family photographs and imaginary renderings of stories, blends representational imagery with fantasy; my art examines the movement of those memories in the “blank spaces” of the mind. Populists and Progressives around the turn of the 20^th century had similar reform goals and many of the same foes. Both wanted to expand the power of the federal government to counter corporate monopolies which were dominating the nation’s economy and political system. In the early 1900s, Progressives enacted numerous reforms that were championed by Populists, including regulating railroads and other large corporations, breaking-up monopolies, implementing a graduated income tax, among other reforms. With so much agreement on policy, why did Populists and Progressives actively work against one another in the 1890s?

"Analytical," "Angry." And "(Too) Honest"?! Learners' Stereotypes About Teachers Of German., Lucian Rothe

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This study investigated stereotypes about teachers of German that 67 novice learners of German at a U.S. university had reportedly encountered. Consequently, the investigation explored the perceived accuracy of clichés associated with native-speaker and non-native-speaker instructors. Students' stereotypical notions were sorted into categories using principles of grounded theory. Statistical analyses showed that respondents were able to list various stereotypes about instructors of German. Responses also reflected societal narratives concerning native-speaker and non-native-speaker teachers' strengths and shortcomings. Last, and of importance to the future of German Studies, participants considered more favorable stereotypes about teachers as more accurate and less-favorable clichés as …

In today’s technological era, understanding if and how teachers’ acceptance and integration of technology evolves is critical to understanding their needs. Technology creates complicated demands on educators and research shows various factors may contribute to their limited success at integrating it (Bustos & Nussbaum, 2009). Research also shows that teachers’ perceptions and attitudes towards pedagogical innovations and information and communication technologies are prominent factors that impact adoption and integration (Tejedor & Muñoz-Repiso, 2006), and the perceptions teachers develop as pre-service teachers influence their classroom performance as in-service teachers (Moon et al., 2016). This dissertation charts the significant, if understudied, history of American horses during the era of World War I, from roughly 1914 to 1919. Its chapters trace how the US Army acquired, used, cared for, and ultimately demobilized horses over the course of that conflict. Beginning with their acquisition, via either an Army Horse Breeding Program or a complicated buying process, horses faced a complex introduction into military service. Life for these animals did not get any easier once they reached the European front. Although the US military was beginning to replace horses with motor trucks and tractors, horses remained central …

Towards More Task-Generalized And Explainable Ai Through Psychometrics, Alec Braynen

In this work, we propose that adopting the methods, principles, and guidelines of the field of psychometrics can help the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community to build more task-generalizable and explainable AI. Three arguments are presented and explored. These arguments are that psychometrics can help by providing 1) a framework for formulating better datasets, 2) psychometric AI data that can lead to models of generalization in AI, and 3) explainable AI through more informative evaluations.

A review of psychometrics and psychological generalization is performed, along with an overview of evaluation, generalization, and explainability in AI. Various ideas are presented throughout for …
