Equality And Justice In Aristotle's Theory Of Friendship, Mark Christopher Brennan

In this dissertation, I offer an interpretation of Aristotle’s account of friendship thatemphasizes the importance of fairness in understanding the connection that he draws between friendship and justice. Many contemporary interpretations of Aristotle conclude either that the connection between friendship and justice is primarily relevant in the context of political friendship or is primarily a concern for friendships between virtuous individuals. Such interpretations, however, tend to diminish the importance of friendships on account of usefulness and pleasure in Aristotle’s account, as well as the importance of friendships in associations other than the political association.

Since Alfred Kinsey’s early exploration of sexual behaviors, identities, and desires, there has been a proliferation of studies on what is generally regarded today as sexual fluidity. Inquiry into sexual histories that are neither wholly heterosexual nor homosexual (or even bisexual) has been incredibly well documented by this time. Generally, theories about sexual fluidity have taken one of two positions. The first camp interprets sexual variance as a sign of changing times and crumbling sexual and gender binaries. The second group of theorists postulate that sexual fluidity is neither new nor a particularly positive or liberating social trend. Instead of …

ABSTRACTIn my dissertation, I defend a compatibilist conception of free will against a variety of arguments against compatibilism, and free will more generally. In the process of defending compatibilist free will against these arguments, I will be fleshing out some details of what I think free will is. Along the way, I will be developing and defending some views on related concepts, such as the concept of control. This dissertation examines within the context of his life and times the work of the Second Generation artist Richard Stankiewicz (1922-83). It demonstrates at various stages his shifting modes of work as conditions of his geographical location, financial security, and the availability of materials changed. It expands and augments what has become the canonical view of the artist’s life and work, correcting critical misunderstandings and placing them coincident with pre-and post-World War II (the 1950s through the early 1980s) American and European history. Agrarian states are often viewed as premodern manifestations of complex urbanism, with environmental constraints limiting growth and their sustainability. Pre-Columbian states in the Northern Maya Lowlands were one context where these conditions were thought to apply. However, despite environmental constraints such as a scrub forest, periodic droughts and hurricanes, and an uneven distribution of resources, civilization flourished. Critical to the success of these states were social and economic institutions that supported highly effective landscape management strategies. The impact of these systems is still apparent today.Multiscalar approaches are critical to understanding the complex structures of subsistence economies in premodern urban places. …

This project examines how international development changed during the second half of the Cold War, using development to highlight transformations in global discourse on needs, rights, and socioeconomic equity. After the late 1960s, nations in the global North, most notably the United States, struggled to reconcile the failure of the modernization schemes they had funded throughout the global South. In response, experts and activists around the world worked together in the 1970s to create a diverse array of alternative theories meant to uplift socioeconomically disadvantaged nations which centered on the concept of basic human needs. Public administration scholars have long believed that bureaucratic whistleblowers help make bureaucracies more democratic, effective, and accountable. With these firm convictions, the U.S. federal government has introduced a series of whistleblower protection systems to balance administrative power and external political accountability of public organizations. Building on this intellectual history of public administration scholarship on whistleblowing, this dissertation aims to: 1) understand bureaucratic whistleblowing at the theory-level, 2) examine the effects of whistleblower protection laws on bureaucrats at the individual-level, and 3) investigate how whistleblowing outcomes can reshape bureaucracies at the organizational-level.

Theoretical perspectives in the chess expertise literature, such as chunking and template theories, assume that experts acquire the ability to process domain-specific visual features as larger patterns. Eye tracking techniques can test predictions derived from these theories, because the eye movement record provides fine-grained information about where and when experts are looking during a domain-specific task. In this dissertation, I assessed the generalizability of chunking and template theories to the domain of music reading expertise with a novel music-related variant of the flicker paradigm. This dissertation analyzes fantastic short fiction in terms of its relationship to the traditionalist and progressive forces that were vying for hegemonic control over Spanish national identity in the ever-changing period of the nineteenth century, demonstrating how these powers shaped Spain’s past and future national character to suit ideologically driven narratives and revealing how fantastic literature can disrupt these narratives to unlock new patterns of thought. This paper seeks to gain insight into American composer Jocelyn Hagen’s musical style, delving into her compositional process through analyses of three of her choral settings of Sara Teasdale’s poetry: April and the Sun, To See the Sky, and Joy. This work offers a detailed analysis of each piece using Jan Larue’s analytical method, which focuses on the basic musical elements of sound, harmony, melody, rhythm, and growth (known through its abbreviated form as SHMRG).

林黛玉為《紅樓夢》重要人物之一。小說中黛玉出自書香世家，生性聰敏，自小讀書識字，極具詩才。母親早逝，由外祖母接至賈府照顧，和表兄寶玉一同在賈府長大，展開悲劇的一生。《紅樓夢》為一部悲劇著作，以「情」為主題，寫大觀園一眾女子的故事，曹雪芹於小說中暗示「千紅一哭」、「萬豔同悲」，令主題統一，故作者安排黛玉一個「悲」的結局，在藝術手法上為合理的。黛玉因情轉世，亦因情而亡，作為小說中的悲劇人物，於情節安排以及主題發揮上，扮演重要角色。

黛玉最終的結局，因版本不一與「紅樓夢未完」之故，歷年來一直備受爭議。然而，各家之言，皆一致認為黛玉的生命，始於不幸，終於虛無，黛玉承受的痛苦多而深，於小說的悲劇美學上，存有很高的價值。本文以「黛玉之死」為題，首先綜合歷來各學者之說法和版本，選其最佳者作研究對象，繼而從情節和詩詞中，分析黛玉的身世、體質、性格、命運，以窺探其早夭的原因與死亡的痛苦。

論蘇偉貞女性眷村小說「封閉」的意義, Yee Lam Tseng

眷村第二代作家蘇偉貞在八零年代因作品多以男女情愛為主，被批評缺乏討論現實問題。筆者認為，蘇偉貞雖然表面上聚焦男女情慾的問題，但是其小說的核心關懷實爲探討第一代眷村女性在臺灣歷史中「失語」的困境，並藉此思考第二代女性放下歷史包袱、勇於走出「封閉」眷村的可能性。故本論文主張蘇偉貞從其眷村小說《有緣千里》開始探討眷村內部的女性議題，並在臺灣解嚴後出版的小說中《離開同方》正式為族群的女性發聲。

本論文以這兩部小說作為研究對象，首先討論蘇偉貞寫作時的「封閉」狀態，並延伸分析小說中兩代眷村女性所面臨的困境。第三章將藉分析兩代女性「封閉」的內心世界，探討第一代眷村女性在臺灣歷史中「失語」的困境以及第二代女性逃離的慾望。第四章則反思兩代眷村女性如何通過追尋自我，尋找走出這個「封閉」世界的意義。

Human Nature explores my personal observations and life experiences through the use of my narrative ceramic sculptures. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics or behaviors to non-human entities, such as animals. Some animals are more desirable than others, but all have value and purpose. They exist for a reason. They all bleed. They just want to be. People are like that. I became untrusting of humans after a childhood trauma and began relating more to animals than humans. New Zealand imposed conscription during WWI due to the fact the country was a part of the British Empire and was therefore required to contribute troops to the war effort on their behalf. Conscription, or compulsory military service, was used to quickly and effectively mobilize large numbers of soldiers to fight in the war. New Zealand introduced conscription through the Military Service Act of 1916, which required all able-bodied men between the ages of twenty and forty-five to register for military service.
