Review: Terryl Givens. Mormonism (Or The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints): What Everyone Needs To Know. New York: Oxford University Press, 2020., Jill Peterfeso

Mormon Studies Review

Terryl Givens’s new book Mormonism (Or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints): What Everyone Needs to Know is a resource guide that seeks to explain the LDS Church’s history, beliefs, and practices, and in so doing clarifies items of confusion and controversy. The book is organized into topic-driven chapters (such as “History,” “Polygamy,” “Organization,” and “Conflicts and Challenges”), which unfold in a question-and-answer format. The questions Givens tackles range from predictable (“Why did the Latter-day Saints practice polygamy?” “What is the church’s relationship to Christianity?”) to unexpected (“What do Latter-day Saint scriptures teach about peace and war?” “Does …

Review: David Walker. Railroading Religion: Mormons, Tourists, And The Corporate Spirit Of The West. Chapel Hill: University Of North Carolina Press, 2019., Emily Ogden

Mormon Studies Review

David Walker’s Railroading Religion: Mormons, Tourists, and the Corporate Spirit of the West tells the riveting story of how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints won the battle not only to define what the railroad would mean in Utah but also to locate the junction and stations that would have a definitive impact on development near the Great Salt Lake. Through well-executed bureaucratic maneuvers, Brigham Young and other church leaders secured the construction of a railroad infrastructure that they calculated would best serve church interests.

What’S A Guanaco?: Tracing The Llama Diaspora Through And Beyond South America, Emily Wakild Jan 2022

What’S A Guanaco?: Tracing The Llama Diaspora Through And Beyond South America, Emily Wakild

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let us begin with Spook the llama. Spook lived in the animal enclosures at New York’s Central Park Zoo in 1912. Caretakers described Spook as a “morose, cantankerous” soul inhabiting the back of the deer range. Initially forlorn by this location, he looked out the back door at the road that circled past the pen. The busy street proved entertaining as it was full of noisy automobiles and anxious drivers honking. Spook watched the cars and, before long, learned to honk. Or so reported the head keeper at the zoo, Bill Snyder, who claimed “Spook thrust his head forward, drew …

The Mozart Conversation Or The Aria Of Nannerl Mozart: Drama In Three Acts And Two Tableaux, Emmanuel M. Dubois

Emmanuel Dubois Compositions

1 play (v + 66 pages) ; includes Synopsis, Cast of characters, Setting, Costumes, Props

The full-length historic drama examines the impact of emerging feminism in the Mozart family during the Enlightenment era.

As social changes cause the rejection of sexism, Nannerl, Mozart's sister disrupts male ordained traditions as she affirms her genius as a musician. The new social trends disrupt the affectionate relationship with her brother Wolfgang, who is psychologically exhausted by the stress to perform. The parents, Leopold and Anna Maria, invoke the respect of old traditions to exploit financially the genius of their son and to minimize …

Who Does That?: Further Conversations On Drawing Down The Moon, Radcliffe Edmonds Iii Jan 2022

Who Does That?: Further Conversations On Drawing Down The Moon, Radcliffe Edmonds Iii

Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper addresses responses to Drawing Down the Moon by Shannon Grimes, James Davila, Gregory Shaw, and Naomi Janowitz, using the cues of extraordinary efficacy, performance, social location, and ends to determine whether something is labeled magic and by whom. In each of the papers, the cue of social location appears as the most significant, even though the others each play a role as well.

Re-Worlding The Virtual: Exploring Art And Archipelagic Education Through Virtual Environments, Glenn Loughran, John O'Connor Jan 2022

Re-Worlding The Virtual: Exploring Art And Archipelagic Education Through Virtual Environments, Glenn Loughran, John O'Connor

Conference Papers

This paper expands on the use of virtual environments to address educational questions around social isolation, embodiment and knowledge production. Supported by curricular experimentations with archipelagic thinking, it reflects on the potential for virtual environments to provide novel educational contexts for students to explore the relationship between art and environment at a time of climate transition. Archipelagic thinking is a theoretical framework that emerged out of Island studies and postcolonial discourse in the late 20th century. Emphasising relational flow between islanders, islands, entities and worlds, archipelagic thinking seeks to address the epistemological distinctions between centre and periphery, between the northern …

"Mi Estilo Lo Confirma Letra Por Letra": La Literatura Criminal En "El Niño Proletario" De Osvaldo Lamborghini, Ana María Mutis Jan 2022

"Mi Estilo Lo Confirma Letra Por Letra": La Literatura Criminal En "El Niño Proletario" De Osvaldo Lamborghini, Ana María Mutis

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

This article uses ecofeminism to study the status of women in French, Spanish and Portuguese speaking African countries. Taking Mongo Beti’s character, Perpetua, as an archetype, it demonstrates that women are subjected to a twofold domination that associates them with nature. Since the ideology of capitalism and progress that underlies African modernity views nature as dead matters to be conquered and exploited, it also rationalizes the oppression of women. Indeed, the reification of nature results in the social representation of women’s body as the repressible Other, a production tool and as exploitable resources.

Prolongement Des Concepts De Mongo Beti Autour De L’Éco-Solidarité: Barthélémy Toguo, Hélène Tissières

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The writer and activist Mongo Beti upon his return in 1991 to his homeland in Cameroon, worked with the farmers, crushed by the political system. As he recalls in his novel Ville cruelle, colonial prerogatives have impacted urban planning and the environment. In regards to the numerous ecological disasters, the philosopher Fabien Eboussi Boulaga recalls the communities’ ancient approaches. Currently are such concerns being further tackled in Cameroon ? This brings us to reflect on Barthélémy Toguo’s artistic contributions and cultural center in Bandjoun, a part of which is devoted to the peasants in the surrounding region to preserve the …

Mongo Beti Et La Prophétie Irréalisée De Martin Luther King Jr. Black Bodies Matter !, Cilas Kemedjio

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The suffering of the black body has reclaimed center-stage in the media galaxy thanks to the Black Lives Matter phenomenon, a movement that lives on social media. In this contribution, I argue that despite its ephemeral nature, Black Lives Matter proceeds from a long tradition of black activism. Locating the current reincarnation of the long struggle for black human rights leads us to the trope of metaphors of slavery that captures the materiality of the black suffering body. Metaphors of slavery run from Martin Luther King Jr.’s passion during the civil rights movement to Mongo Beti’s life-long commitment to the …

Mongo Beti Et Le Rubénisme : Une Histoire Du Futur, Jean-Blaise Samou Jan 2022

Mongo Beti Et Le Rubénisme : Une Histoire Du Futur, Jean-Blaise Samou

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Although the importance of history in Mongo Beti’s work is well established, research is less prolific on the vision that this Cameroonian writer had of the future of the African people. Yet his work, inspired by everyday life and anchored in the immediate history of the African continent, is strewn with precise reflections on the future of the Black world. The present article explores in Beti’s critical and literary production the foundations of an “omniprésent présent” (François Hartog, Régimes d’historicité, 2003) which highlights another obsession, that of a dream of self-determination and prosperity for the African peoples. By drawing parallels …

Lights, Camera, Confidence: The Effects Of Theatre On Self-Esteem, Morgan Savatgy Jan 2022

Lights, Camera, Confidence: The Effects Of Theatre On Self-Esteem, Morgan Savatgy

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Theatre serves as a creative outlet and an escape for designers, actors, and directors. It is also often a cathartic experience for audience members to be fully immersed in, and escape into, a theatrical production. Knowing that theatre can have such a great impact on an individual's state of mind, how exactly does theatre affect self-esteem? According to my research, the presence of theatre and the dramatic arts positively affects the lives of participants in many groups. One of these is elementary school students, who are taught theatre in order to create a space within which to learn foundational skills, …
